Chapter 8

(Jack's P.O.V.)

"Hey, you wanna go out and do something? I'm getting bored just being here everyday." I say, walking down the stairs. Mark shrugs, getting up and getting his shoes on.

"Sure. You have anything specific in mind?" He asks. I shrug.

"Whatever you want to do I guess." I say. He nods.

"Well I'm not up for doing to much today. I guess we could go take a walk at the nature preserve." He suggests. I smile.

"The same nature preserve I got lost at?" I ask. He laughs.

"Yes that one. Though, we shouldn't get lost this time." He says. I shrug.

"Sure. Let's go." I say, opening the door. It doesn't take long for us to be walking down a trail (different from the one I took) at the nature preserve.

"You have a week and a half left here." Mark says suddenly. I smile, nodding.

"Yeah. Nothing wrong with being here, but I'm ready to be back home." I laugh. Mark nods, smiling as well.

"Yeah I bet. I mean, a month is a long time, especially if you planned on being here for only five days." He says. I nod, agreeing.

"Yeah." I say quietly.

"Anyways, the real reason I brought it up was because I was gonna ask, is there anything you want to do? Like, any goals before you leave?" He asks. Don't let Anti out. I sigh, shrugging.

"I don't know. Maybe we can go downtown at some point." I say. Mark shakes his head a bit.

"I don't know." He says, but it sounds like he's avoiding going downtown. And he said he didn't want to do much today, that's very unlike Mark.

"Mark I have a question." I say. He turns to me, tilting his head to the side. "Okay, I'm gonna state a few things first. One, you were really worried when I didn't come home for four hours. Two, you said there were shady people out here. Three, you're avoiding going out anywhere heavily populated. So my question is, did something happen that I should know about?" I ask, concerned. He sighs, staring at the ground.

"Um... Yeah..." He says, looking up again. I stop walking, Mark follow suit. We step to the side of the trail and I lean on a tilted tree, Mark standing in front of me.

"What happened?" I ask. He closes his eyes.

"It'd be better if I just told you the entire story." He says. I shrug.

"We have time." I say. He nods and starts his story.

"It was a couple months ago. Wade, Bob, Matt, Ryan and I were all hanging out downtown. Just doing whatever. We ran into fans a lot, which is a given. At some point we ran into this group of teenagers who were really big fans. They wanted us all to sign their backpacks. So, I went first, then Bob, then Wade, etc. Anyways, while the other guys were signing somebody else came and tapped me on the shoulder. I turned and it was, like, someone our age which surprised me. He said he was a fan and wanted me to sign something but it was left in his car. I said okay, and when he asked me to follow him to his car, I did..."

"...As soon as we were about ten feet away from the guys, this person went behind me and put a gun to my back. He said to get in his car or he'd shoot. So, obviously, I got in the car. He did as well, still pointing his gun at me. We hadn't started moving yet, thank god. He told me to put my house address into his GPS so I grabbed the GPS and I started typing. I looked over and I saw that the guy put the gun down. So I typed a fake address and I went to put it back but instead of putting the GPS down I grabbed his car keys and ran out of the car. I locked it afterwards, making it so he couldn't get out right away. I ran, he shot. Eventually I made it back to the guys, who were freaking out about where I went, and I made them run into a shop where we just waited until I was sure the guy was gone. So there you go. That's why I don't want to go anywhere." He explains. I frown a bit.

I can't believe that. Mark was held at gunpoint? God, that's just terrible. I embrace him in a hug, closing my eyes. "I'm sorry that happened to you." I say softly, Mark slowly hugging me back.

"I'll live. It just scarred me for a little bit." He says and I nod understandingly. Then he pulls away from the hug and I'm forced to do the same, although I don't want too. Then we start walking down the path again, this time talking about whatever comes to mind.
