Chapter 5
Daddy, let's go home. She says with a smile, taking a step back. One more step and the illusion of Charlotte would fall off the building.
"Come on baby girl, get back from the ledge." Jane was getting desperate, he had already taken several steps towards the ledge without knowing but it didn't matter, all that mattered was Charlotte.
No. She says more confidently. It's time to go home.
"You come to me right now young lady!"
Three more steps. Two left and he'll fall.
At this Charlotte grins and spreads her arms out. Catch me daddy! She says falling backwards.
"NO!" He screams and runs just as two arms wrap and his waist and Jane falls back. Teresa had him in a iron grip and matter how hard he struggled she wouldn't let go.
"My daughter! Teresa she fell! Let me go!"
Using all his might Jane grabs her and tears Teresa away from him, immediately running towards to ledge. Teresa shouts his name right as Jane jumps. She's able to grab his hand and Jane is now dangling from the roof top.
"Patrick! She never jumped!"
"Teresa you have to let me go!"
"Alright," she says with determination, "I want you to look down, if your daughter is there then I'll let you go."
He pauses for a moment, she wanted him to see Charlotte? But no one can survive this fall.
"Jane please, look down."
He cringed at the thought of seeing his daughter dead, Teresa is now holding his hand with both of hers, she wouldn't be able to hold him for very long. Seeing this Jane looks down only to find his daughter...gone? No blood, no daughter, just a clean sidewalk.
"I-I don't understand.", Jane looks up at her. "She's not there."
"Patrick," her voice is full of sympathy, "Charlotte never jumped."
Hearing this, Jane grabs her arm with his free hand and let's the doctor lift him back onto the roof. The man is in shock, his daughter never jumped? But he saw her. Teresa sits down with him, emotionally exhausted.
"Are you okay?"
"Charlotte...she never... I don't understand."
"When I lost my mother, I saw her everywhere." Teresa starts. "It was only when I let her go did I stop seeing her."
The woman rubs his back to comfort him.
"I think it's time you let Charlotte go."
"I can't. She's my..."
"Was."
"She was my daughter."
There's a moment of silence as Jane contemplates what just happened. Both sitting side by side not saying a word.
Charlotte was gone.
