And Bloom did what she said she would. She went home to California and told her parents everything. They took it hard but seemed pretty cool with their daughter being a fairy when Bloom invited all of them to visit her home. When they got back to Alfea, things were messy. Silva was being arrested for the attempted murder of Sky's father who turned out to be alive. Dowling was nowhere to be seen and Rosalind was taking her place as Headmistress.
Beatrix, as Rosalind's little helper, seemed to face no consequences for her actions and was happier than ever. And by happier than ever, Sabrina meant that she was following her everywhere and trying to make her forgive her.
That was how Sabrina ended up hiding outside of the barrier. It was the place that she and Riven used to go to smoke during their freshman year. Now it was just a hiding place and a reminder that her old life was ruined. Riven hated her and thought that she was a monster because she didn't know if she loved him or not. Stella and Sky broke up. Brandon loved Stella and couldn't live without her but still refused to talk to her while she pretended that he didn't exist. Roxy was gone. Dowling probably was too. Sky and Riven were not on speaking terms. At least she still had Tecna, Bloom, and Stella who she was closer to than ever.
Fall was slowly slipping away into winter which was the main reason that Sabrina had more layers on than usual. The hood of her jacket was thrown over her head and she leaned against a tree with a cigarette in her hand in hopes that it would provide her at least some type of warmth.
"I knew I would find you here."
Sabrina's breath hitched and her body went rigid. She refused to turn around. She had no idea if she was supposed to be reluctant to talk to him because she was guilty or because she was angry. She figured that the latter was much easier.
"I heard you helped save Beatrix." Her tone was monotone, showing no sign of any emotion other than a hint of disappointment. "I guess I should thank you for giving me yet another shadow that follows me around everywhere."
She wished she was facing him when all color disappeared from his face.
"How did you know?" Riven asked hesitantly, his voice much different than it was when he walked up to her.
Sabrina pursed her lips and shrugged. "Dane has a big mouth."
Riven scoffed behind her, more annoyed than surprised. "It might be his biggest flaw."
With little to no hesitance, Riven took a few steps forward to stand in front of her, the leaves crunching under his feet. Despite the fact that he was standing in front of her, Sabrina refused to meet his gaze and chose to keep her eyes on the ground.
"Why did you follow me out here?" She dared to ask and then took a drag out of the cigarette between her fingers.
Riven's gaze was so intense that she could feel burning a hole in the side of her face. He let out a heavy sigh and said, "You know why. Sorry, you 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 that you know why. Because you always think that you know everything when, in fact, you don't."
"I don't know why you're here," Sabrina snapped, accidentally looking up in the process. Her glare faltered slightly when their eyes met "that's why I asked."
"You think that I hate you and that I helped Beatrix because I wanted to see you suffer." Riven stated confidently. "You think that you hurt me enough for me to betray you when that couldn't be farther than the truth. I helped Dane save Beatrix because I know you care about her. And despite the fact that you got into my head without my consent ── not cool, by the way ── I still can't hate you."
"You hated me before that." The fairy shot back, "You wouldn't be afraid of me if you didn't."
Riven groaned in annoyance. "Jesus, Sabrina, I am not afraid of 𝘺𝘰𝘶. I am afraid of my feelings 𝘧𝘰𝘳 you. And I am also incredibly afraid of rejection and failure. Which is why falling in love with the most emotionally unstable girl in Alfea was most definitely not a good idea."
Sabrina's face softened and her defensive glare melted away into a confused expression. "You aren't scared of me?"
"You almost lost control in front of me hundreds of times. If I was actually afraid of you I would shut you out a long time ago." Riven explained and let out a huff. "And I can't figure out if you aren't ready for a relationship or if you just don't believe that I have feelings for you."
A sigh escaped her lips before she offered him a small sad smile. "Would you be annoyed if I said that it's a little bit of both?"
Sabrina was the least likable fairy in the school. She was cold and bitchy most of the time and had no idea what she was feeling ninety-nine percent of the time. Falling for her would be impossible in her head. And Riven was an arrogant asshole who she never saw dating anyone so why the hell would he feel anything non-platonic for 𝘩𝘦𝘳? Especially after he claimed to hate her for a long time.
"A little." Riven admitted but there was a small smile gracing his lips at the knowledge that her walls were not big enough to let her cover her insecurities. "I'll find a way for you to realize how serious I am about us. Until then" he sighed "let's just focus on dealing with Rosalind and Sky. We both know that he needs much more guidance than anyone."
"He has Bloom." Sabrina said with a small knowing smile that fell the second Riven raised a knowing eyebrow. "Yeah, she is equally lost."
"So, you are on Bloom and Stella duty while Brandon and I deal with Sky. Deal?" Riven asked, a grin on his face like they weren't discussing how much shit their friends went through these past few days.
Sabrina couldn't help but chuckle at the boyish glint in his eyes. "Deal."
