3:Don't Underestimate the Pawn

I don't edit chapters before I post them because I rarely have the time so if you see any mistakes please let me know!:)

Young Blood by Bea Miller

...
"Don't underestimate the power of a pawn," India says before striking down her father's king with the smallest chess piece on the board.

"That's three wins in a row," John Quail says, proud of his daughter. "Good job India."

"Thanks father," she said happily. "Do you want to play again?"

"I thought Keenan Lockhart was coming over soon to study for that anatomy test you have next week," he asked his daughter. A little relief lifted the weight of his shoulders knowing that India wasn't showing the least bit excitement in seeing Keenan.

India looked at the watch on her father's wrist, seeing it was two minutes before noon. He should be here any minute and she had totally forgot!

"Wow time went by fast," she said and helped her father move the pieces back to their appropriate places.

"Only when you're having fun and beating your old man at chess."

"Beating you is never fun father," she told him with a sneaky smile.

John Quail demanded respect for his job, being the warden of a large prison and all. It was drilled into India's head when she was younger that her father deserved respect at home also. She started to call him father years ago, hoping it would make him like her more. It only helped a little.

India and her father never spoke about what happened when she was younger. It was a silent agreement that those secrets stay locked forever in the farthest corner of the house.

All that mattered now was that their relationship was at its peak and no one could come between them again.

The doorbell rang, signaling Keenan's arrival.

"I'll get it darling," he said before disappearing out of the living room with a pat to her shoulder.

The Quails house wasn't huge by any means but it wasn't tiny either. It fit their needs perfectly; a study, an office for both of them so India could concentrate on her homework, a big enough kitchen, a library, but no trace of video game consuls or TVs. John Quail wanted to keep his daughter on the right track and not cloud her head with the media or gaming. She despised it when she was younger but as she grew older she had grown used to the silence in the house.

Keenan and John walked back into the living room having a conversation about Keenan's choice of colleges.

"Well you certainly have good choices. Did India tell you that she got into Harvard," he asked, clearly wanting to show off his daughter's great attributes.

"Really," Keenan asked excited for his friend, "that's amazing India!"

"Father," she groaned, "we haven't gotten the acceptance letter yet. Don't tell people I am when I might not."

"Might not," he spoke incredulously. "You're the valedictorian, you're a great person, you volunteer, and you're everything that Harvard would want in a student."

"Well we have yet to get the letter father so please no praises just yet," she pleaded.

John huffed before spinning on his heel and stomping out of the room. He knew his daughter was getting into Harvard but most of all he hated when she told him what to do.

"Well I'm sure you'll get in," Keenan reassured a now sulking India.

She only nodded her head sadly. "We can work in my office."

India hated to make her father upset but most importantly she hated to see him disappointed. They had been trying together since she was a baby to get into Harvard but she wasn't so sure that she would get in. Of course she was a great student at Green Field High but GFHS was nothing compared to Harvard.

Keenan followed behind India as she led him to her very own office which was actually an extra bedroom. Keenan's house was much larger than hers but he had to admit that Mr. Quail knew how to make a small home look grander than it really was. Keenan always thought it was odd that they didn't own a single TV in their entire house and that they relied on the newspaper for the big news in the world. But he also knew how strict Mr. Quail was and how much he wanted his daughter to succeed.

Keenan always thought that Mr. Quail wanted India to be like his own parents, both were very successful doctors who were the wealthiest people in town. Maybe that's why Keenan was the only boy Mr. Quail let his daughter be around.

"We should do an over view first then break it down later," India said once they got into her office. She sat behind her desk letting Keenan have the other side. Keenan had only been in her office twice before and each time he was amazed by the anatomy charts and the creepy skeleton in the corner of the room. Although India was only eighteen and hadn't even graduated high school yet, Keenan thought she looked like a doctor in every way, mostly in her office.

"That's new," he said once he saw the large map pinned to the wall next to him. There were a few cut out pictures of land marks in their appropriate places like the Eiffel Tower on France, Statue of Liberty on New York, and The Great Wall of China in China.

The map looked completely out of place compared to the rest of the decoration.

"Oh yeah," India said. She swiveled in her chair to look at it, a smile slowly grew on her face. "I found it in the back of my garage under a bunch of stuff. I thought it would be nice to hang it up so I wouldn't have to look at body parts every time I was in here."

"Did the pictures come with it too or did you do that?"

"Actually it was odd," she whispered as she examined the photos. "I found them along with the map but they were locked in an old box. Lucky for me I know where all the spare keys are hidden."

"Hidden," Keenan asked curiously. "You think your Dad hid them on purpose?"

India got a far off look in her eyes which Keenan instantly noticed. "My Dad likes to hide a lot of things. I'm just really good at finding them."

The mood in the air changed from carefree to tense as India began to space out, clearly thinking about something deep. Keenan knew India's Dad had a dark past, he just didn't know how dark it really was.

"So overview then huh," Keenan asked, catching India's attention.

She twisted back to the desk focusing on her study guide she made. "Yes right," she mumbled then the two dived into two hours of anatomy.

Keenan gathered his things to leave feeling completely exhausted from studying so hard. Keenan might have great grades but he worked hard to keep them up, India however doesn't have to do much. Keenan always thought that India gets to use a lot more of her brain mass than most humans because she's so smart, and of course the same goes for her heart as well because she's so kind.

Her three legged dog came barreling down the hallway once Keenan walked out, almost knocking him to the floor.

"Oh hi Blue," India cooed, bending down to scoop the handicapped husky into her arms.

"I didn't know you were so strong," Keenan observed as she struggled to keep the fairly large dogs in her arms.

"I'm not," she huffs. "I just don't want Blue to be on his paws twenty four seven. His back foot takes too much pressure giving him a lot of pain."

"So you carry around a fifty pound dog," Keenan asked amused.

India pushed by him in a rush and Keenan followed behind. She set him down on an arm chair in the living room before kissing Blue on the head and turning back around towards Keenan.

"I don't want him in pain," she said seriously but with a slight pout.

"Of course you don't," Keenan said with a smile. "Well I have to go. I got this thing," he said awkwardly.

He didn't want to know what India would think of Keenan once she found out the truth about him. He wasn't a good boy like she's always thought, he was actually like every other teenager.

But the camping trip? If she knew about that than what could she possibly think of him then?

"You aren't going to rob a liquor store are you," she teased.

"No silly," he mused, "I have a fake I.D. for that." India gasped in horror making Keenan laugh. "Kidding, I'm just kidding." He hoped she actually believed him because really his fake I.D. was sitting in his wallet right now.

India rolled her eyes and opened her mouth to say something witty before Luna, her only friend came running into the room.

"India you wouldn't believe what happened on-"

Luna stopped talking immediately once she saw Keenan standing in the center of the room. "Oh well hello there Keenan."

India blushed at Luna's straight forwardness. Luna has always been a flirt but no guy has yet to suffer through her brutal honesty.

"Hi Luna," Keenan said politely. He never really talked to Luna, he only saw her sometimes hanging around India at school but their friend circles hardly clashed.

She had red hair and a perfect face to go along a perfect body but from what he's heard she was too intense for the guys at school.

"Studying huh," she said suggestively, quirking her eyebrows at the two.

"Yes we were studying Luna. Do you know what that is," Keenan teased.

"Nope," she said popping the p, "never heard of it before."

"Figures," Keenan muttered but sent a wink, letting her know that he was only teasing. "Well bye India, thanks for having me over."

"Anytime," India said as he headed for the entrance.

"You should bring Aiden over next time. I think we both need study help," Luna hollered as he walked around the corner and out the door. She turned back around to India after getting no response.

"So Aiden huh? Isn't he that twin," India asked her friend as they settled on the couch.

"The hot one actually, you can't forget that part," Luna pointed out.

"They're identical Luna. Neither one is hotter than the other."

"Fine then Aiden is the better one okay?"

"How so," India asked curiously. She never understood boys, let alone talk to them other than Keenan and whenever Luna brought up the topic she only ended up more confused.

"Because I actually talk to him," Luna said as if it a well-known fact. "He's in my pottery class and he's so funny like yesterday we were shaping our bowls and he said-"

"Why don't you tell me why you're here," India interrupted. She really didn't want to talk about Luna's crush at the moment when she knows that in a couple weeks she'll end up broken hearted anyways because he won't be able to keep up with her honesty.

"Oh yeah," Luna exclaimed, shooting up to her knees on the couch. "I just watched the newest episode of Pretty Little Liars and oh my gosh India! You won't believe what happened! And now I'm into this new show called Scream on MTV which is like a more intense version of PLL..."

India listened intently to Luna's babbling. Since she isn't allowed to watch TV she lets Luna tell her everything about every show she watches which is a lot. With Luna's descriptions it's almost as good as watching the real thing. But Luna seems to be into more dark shows where there's always a bad boy and some type of villain so India knows a lot more about dark themes than her father would like.

Still India treasured this time with her friend because it's always been so interesting to watch Luna rampage and throw her arms through the air like an acrobatic.

...

"Um excuse me sir," a voice said from a few feet away.

Jesse could only see the sneakers and knee high socks of the boy from his spot under the car but he knew instantly who it was from the voice. He rolled his eyes even though Lee couldn't see him. "Go bother someone else."

"Jesse," Lee asked confused.

"What do you want," Jesse growled, hoping to ward off the annoying boy he used to call his friend.

"I need to pick up my car. I got the AC fixed."

Jesse sighed and rolled out from under the car. He sat up and wiped the sweat from his brow with the dirty rag next to him. "The pick up right," he asked the jock.

"That's it," he nodded his head with a cheerful smile.

Jesse got up off the ground gestured for Lee to follow him to the office in the back. When he got there he searched for the paper with Lee's name on it and his set of keys. "Sign this and you're free to go."

He shoved the piece of paper at Lee and threw the keys on the desk before heading for the door. Right before he got to it the son of his boss came barreling through with a cigarette between his teeth.

"What do you think you're still doing here kid? You're off the clock."

"It's called over time," Jesse snarled.

"We don't do over time here kid. Get the hell out of here before I fire your ass," he growled.

"Don't call me kid, you're only five years older than me and you don't have the power to fire me. Only your dad does."

"Do you see my Dad anywhere around here," he leant in to snarl.

"He's in the garage. I just saw him."

"Just get the hell out kid," he yelled before spinning on his heel and walking out the door.

Jesse cursed to himself because it was raining outside and he didn't have his car right now. Thanks to whoever trashed his house last night his car is in his very own shop with slashed tires. Jesse couldn't help but think the culprits were friends with Lee.

"He sounds like a prick," Lee said, handing him the signed paper.

"Looks like one too," Jesse grumbled and stormed out of the auto body shop, preparing to walk the three miles back to his house in the rain.

He got ten minutes into the walk when a familiar red pick truck pulled up beside him on the road. The window rolled down to reveal Lee in the driver's seat.

"Need a ride," he yelled over the sound of the rain.

"No," Jesse yelled back and continued to walk.

Two seconds later a flash of lightning lit up the sky right over Jesse's head and less than five seconds later the booming sound of thunder rang in Jesse's ears.

Lee pulled up beside him again. "Get in before you get electrocuted."

As much as Jesse didn't like Lee he hated walking in a thunderstorm more. He lifted himself into the truck grudgingly.

"Want me to drive you home," Lee asked once they were back on the road.

"Where else would I go," Jesse snapped.

Lee didn't even flinch at Jesse's tone. "Well I was headed over to the Draft Pick at Keenan's right now."

"The Draft Pick," Jesse asked, knowing what he meant. "You guys are really doing it this year?"

"Apparently," Lee said awkwardly. He's always been the kindest out of the group of guys so he never was too keen on the idea of the B.Y.O.C. trip. "Do you want to come with?"

"What," Jesse asked him before laughing. "Are you asking me to join your little orgy in the woods?"

"No," Lee snapped, "just to come to Keenan's house and watch it. I don't know, you don't have to go. I just remember you telling me how excited you were for it two years ago."

"A lot of things have changed since then Lee," Jesse grumbled but stopped for a second to think about it. "Now that I think about it," he said smirking, "attending the Draft Pick does sound fun."

"Really," Lee asked excited.

"Of course," Jesse smiled, only because he was excited to see Keenan's face when he stepped foot in his own house for the first time in years.
