Chapter Nine
I woke up to the sound of heavy breathing, my head resting on Daryl's chest. As far as I could tell, no one else had woken up yet.
I fixed my clothes quickly before sitting up and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. It was peaceful in that moment, nothing life threatening as I couldn't spot any walkers.
I bit my lip conflicted, not wanting to get up, but the need to stretch getting stronger. I stood slowly as not to wake Daryl, and stretched my arms high above my head with a yawn.
Brushing out my hair I moved to the fire, which was slowly dying out after not being mended to in a while. I added more twigs before I carefully lit a piece of paper setting it in the middle.
I sat back once I saw smoke, and took a deep breath. We couldn't stay with these people, I knew that now, and I believed Daryl felt the same since he was always guarded around them.
I crawled over to the sleeping bag, shaking him awake gently. He grumbled as his eyes opened, and he looked at me. "What is it?" I looked around before whispering my reply, "We should leave now, while no one is awake. It's our best chance." I suggested softly as he sat up.
He too looked around, as if contemplating our next move before finally nodding. "Yeah..ya, okay." He stood up quietly and moved to pack our things as I pulled on my boots, and once everything was dealt with, the two of us headed out.
We'd made it a few miles, and it was now mid afternoon. We kept on our feet, not wanting to risk stopping and have them catch up. "You okay? After what happened?" he asked softy, and I looked to him and nodded with a sigh.
"Yeah..just brought back some bad memories, you know?" He nodded in understanding, and we both fell silent for what seemed like forever.
It wasn't until we found a rundown house in the woods that Daryl spoke up, "This should do for now. C'mon." he stated as he jerked his head towards the house, and I followed after him quickly as he opened the front door.
He entered slowly, crossbow ready to fire incase of walkers and after a few minutes he called out 'clear', signaling for me to come in. I closed the door behind me softly and looked around; the inside was in worse shape than the exterior, and the smell made me gag in disgust.
He peeked out a window, "We can stay here t'night. Should be fine." I nodded, and decided to stretch out on the dirty couch.
It probably wasn't the best place to hide out, but as long as I had Daryl at my side, it wouldn't have mattered if we were in a ditch. As long as I have him...
