Stephanie: Superstar
I can't believe my idol is hitting on my boyfriend.
I think to myself, watching Jessica laugh and smear all over John for the dozenth time.
They were already together once... What's stopping them from doing it again?
John gets up suddenly, slipping from Jessica's hands. He hands me the spliff. "I'll light the fireplace."
"I'll help you." Peter gives Cassie a kiss before he gets up. Roger's face scrunches a little.
"Oo, men's work." Roger reluctantly leaves his armchair. "Damien?"
"I'm good with the girls, dad." Damien gives him a thumb up.
"You always were son." Roger answers, and joins John and Peter out the door.
I take a deep drag. Smoke fills me up from the inside, soft like cotton. It spreads through me in pleasant tingling as I let go.
"So Cassie," The flirtatious ring of Jessica's voice arouses my irritation again. "Who's that man?"
"My man." Cassie answers, then pauses at her own words. "Don't tell him I said that."
Jessica snickers, and Cassie raises a blonde eyebrow. "Did I say something funny?"
"No, it's just that Roger was preparing me for you to try to get in my pants."
"Sorry to disappoint."
"Oh, it's alright, I prefer men anyway."
"Shocker." I say. Cassie and Damien laugh, and Jessica looks at me in surprise.
"Well, I'm marrying one." She replies.
"Seems you have more eyes for the men you aren't marrying." My tongue moves on it's own. Am I actually sassing at Jessica Star right now?
"What do you mean, Steph?" Jessica cocks her head to the side.
I mean your hands all over my boyfriend, you slut.
"I'd say that you're flirting too much with John for his girlfriend's liking." Cassie replies. "And for my liking too."
"Oh you guys are seriously together? That's sweet."
I take a big breath of air, and when it fails to calm me, I take a bigger one from the weed.
John comes back in with split logs under his arm. Peter comes after and Roger last, with a sheen of sweat o his forehead.
"So what the girls are talking about?" Roger asks, as John kneels to light the hearth.
"I was trying to find out more about Cassie's man, but she's not so willing to share." Jessica answers.
"Come on Cassie, where did you find this one?" Roger goes back into the armchair, lifting the whiskey for a sip.
Cassie looks aside to Peter as he sits and slides his arm around her. "He used to be my therapist."
Roger almost spits out the scotch, and Jessica laughs in delight.
"Are you serious?" Roger gulps down, blinking at Cassie.
"Yes, Roger. Very serious." Peter replies.
"Very serious for the weekend maybe." Roger mutters.
"The hell does that mean?" Cassie scowls.
"I mean he's your therapist, that's outrageous." Roger shakes his head.
"Yeah? Think how I feel when you're marrying this teenager."
"Past my teens. But thank you." Jessica waves dismissively.
"You know you could lose your practice-license over this?" Roger locks his eyes down on Peter.
"I'm aware." Peter replies in his calm voice.
"Was that supposed to be a threat?" Cassie raises her eyebrows at Roger.
"No, I'm just worried about his career path..." Roger avoids her eyes.
"Quit teasing them Roger, I think it's romantic." Jessica says. John rises from the fireplace, and takes the bottle from Roger.
"Why don't you get us girls something to drink?" Jessica suggests coyly as John sips from scotch. He walks over to the table, snatches the vodka, and gives it to me as he sits down again.
"Thanks..." Jessica mumbles sarcastically.
"Don't be offended, he just didn't catch up with the concept of glasses yet." Damien sighs, and gets up to bring some. Roger laughs, and lights another spliff. I realize I've been holding a spliff for quite a while now. Embarrassed, I slip it back to John.
He smiles at me, and wraps his arm around my shoulders. I feel some tension breaking off by his touch, and lean back against his arm.
John takes a long puff, tilts his head back, and blows a cloud to the ceiling.
"How do you keep finding better weed?" He asks, smoke tracing from his lips.
"It's my art and trade, son." Roger spreads in his chair, blowing a cloud next to John's.
"Aren't you a music producer?" Lora asks.
"Providing drugs is a big part of producing music, dear." Roger smiles, and spreads his arms. "The better the drugs, the better the music."
Jessica laughs, taking the spliff from John. "Amen to that."
