~Chapter One~
Iris P.O.V.
“Are you sure that I am going to be okay, Doctor Iris?” The little boy with chubby cheeks and a running nose asked me innocently.
"Yes, Jacob, all you have to do is make sure you take your medications and eat all your veggies so that you will be strong and healthy, okay?" I say it with a calm voice and a smile on my face.
“But what if I don't want to eat veggies?”
Kids are all the same when it comes to proper nutrition; the five-year-old is certainly no different.
“Don't you want to get better and be strong enough for Mummy?” I am certain he will agree if I bring up his mother in the conversation, and he did respond with a nod.
“Then you'll have to listen to both me and your mummy so that you can get all better, agree?" I say, extending my hand with my pinkie finger out.
“Agreed.” The little boy replies almost reluctantly, wrapping his little finger around my bigger one.
I chuckle a little and shake my head in amusement at the cute little boy in front of me.
Jacob is one of the many cute children that I have administered treatment to, reminding me why I enjoy my job.
After rounding up Jacob and handing him to his mother, Sarah, I escorted them out. I can't help but smile at the little boy's reluctance to leave the clinic.
Jacob, out of all my patients, is definitely one whom I'm fond of. Unfortunately, since his birth five years ago, he has been a regular at the clinic.
He has quite frail health, but he is always cheerful whenever he comes by. I am always excited to see him, but deep down, I would be happier when he got better.
Lost in thought, I accidentally bumped into a fellow doctor. I quickly look up with an apology at the tip of my tongue, but it dies down when the face registers.
“You did that on purpose.” I say it somewhat harshly, with a snare on my face.
“Ouch, I'm the one that is hurt, but yet I'm to blame.” Chris, my co-worker, says while holding his shoulder.
“I was the one lost in my train of thoughts; you could have easily avoided us running into each other.”
Which is indeed true. At this point, I can confidently say Chris was sent to work at this hospital just to piss me off.
“Okay, okay, you caught me.” He says this as he is holding his hand up in mock surrender with a stupid smile playing on his face. The nerves of this guy.
I try to stare at him with a straight face, but his smile proves to be more infectious than I thought. I give up.
“What do you want, Chris?”
“I just wanted to have a chat with my favourite doctor and co-worker. How's Jacob doing?”
Hearing the name of the sweet little boy causes a smile to creep all over my face. I admire Chris solely for this reason; he cares so much about little children, and the bond he and Jacob share is unmatchable.
“He's good. Still as stubborn as ever, but good.” I respond.
“I really wanted to see the little champ, but I could not finish my workload on time. Did he ask for me, though?”
"Yes, of course; he did say he was definitely going to see you the next time he comes around.”
“A very brilliant boy, I have no doubt that he will live up to his promise. I'll leave you to it then.”
With a little wave and nod, I take my leave, heading to my office.
There is so much work to do. I think to myself, trying to recall the checklist I had drafted earlier to organise my work day.
Just a few steps from my office, I encounter Lydia, our receptionist and a very good friend of mine.
She is definitely someone who stands out with her welcoming smile and her beautiful, luscious hair, which is currently neatly wrapped in a bun.
“Hey Lydia.” I greet her with a friendly wave.
“Hi dear, You have been quite busy since morning; I suppose you would be taking your break by now.”
“Actually, I still have some work to tend to in the office; I will rest afterwards.”
“Alright then.” She replies with a warm smile. She seems to have had a light bulb moment because she then adds.
“Oh, before I forget, I just escorted a visitor into your office; it seems really important.”
My brows furrow in confusion regarding this information.
“A visitor? And who can that be?” I question.
“She didn't say much, aside from the fact that you both indeed have history, and you would recognise her immediately. If I am being honest with myself, I would say she's quite strange.”
“I better head back to the office then. Thank you, Lydia; that will be all.”
Turning on my heels, I make my way to the office with the purpose of getting to know this mysterious visitor and in anger considering the guesses I already have.
Whoever she might be, she has another thing coming to her for meeting me here of all places.
I slam the door of my office open, only to be met with the presence of this person taking up residence on my chair. The back of the chair is facing me directly; I already know who this is.
“What the hell are you doing here?” I can feel my blood boiling hot with anger.
“I was wondering when you were going to finally show up.”
“I asked you a question.” I'm really not in the mood for games.
“You took all the time in the world just to see one kid off; that's quite pathetic. I mean, how sick could he possibly be? It's boring in here; I almost started reading prescription papers.” She replies completely, ignoring my previous question.
She has not changed, not even one bit. Always giving replies with twisted humour added, and always ignoring direct questions.
“I must say I do like your office, Doctor, the interior, the organisation, and, lest I forget, your chair is definitely more comfortable than it looks.”
“Get out of it.” I am definitely losing my patience.
"Well, that's not fair; you're hurting my feelings, Iris.” She turns to face me and meets her eyes with mine.
“I thought you, of all people, would be more welcoming.”
She is definitely enjoying this; I just know from the tint of mischief and amusement playing in her eyes. Her face card tells an entirely different story, as she is wearing an annoying pout.
The more I study her face, the more I take in her features that are identical to mine. Her eyes—that chocolate brown iris that always has a pop of colour to it—and the ability to shift colours up until now are beyond me.
“It has been a long time, my dearest Iris. Tell me, didn't you miss your big sister?”
