Chapter 19

The door creaks open to a dark office room. No lights are open and an eerie silence escapes like cold air.

My hands tremble in anticipation and fear. We should have planned this better, but all we need is time. The best way to give Fury, Diane, and Harry the time they need to get everything ready is to distract the only one who can stop them.

We step into the predicted trap. This situation seems oddly familiar.

"Don't move," Garrison says, pointing two guns on the back of our heads. "I see my son brought a little play toy. Nice to meet you, Subject 293 or should I say, Blaire." He made retching sounds as he said my name.

"It's over now, father. Give up!" Mallory loudly orders, looking straight ahead.

I could feel the cold barrel of the pistol knocking in the back of my head.

"And why should I? I can't believe my son, my precious and only son would go against his father," Garrison snarkily responds.

I guard my expression as I sweep my eyes across the room. Time became the only word that acts as a warning sign in my mind.

Time

Time

Time

Just give them the time that I don't know if I can spare too much.

"What you were doing is wrong, Garrison. Your whole experiment enslaves children into an inhumane lifestyle! There is no point in you continuing this endeavor and give up!" I say loudly.

Garrison smacks the butt of the pistol to my temple. "Shut up! You don't know what is good for my child. His delusions of traveling to different dimensions, meeting mythical friends, and fighting with laser guns?! Unacceptable! Childish!" He shouts.

Then after a moment of silence, his deep throaty laugh increases in volume and fills the whole room with a dark aura.

"I did this all for you, my son. Once I extract that kid mentality gene from your head, you will be cured. But what did you do to thank me? NOTHING! You went on your merry way and destroy every piece of data and discovery with your puny army!" Garrison says.

I exhale a breath. "Yes, we destroyed all your data, but all that data taught you nothing," I hiss. "You never learned how awesome your son can be. How creative he can think or how the dream world can give a sense of peace for many."

I look at Mallory who looks at me with a calm face. "The universe might be confusing for some people who never acknowledge the entire power. Our powers are what creates us. It creates our identity." I turn around and face Garrison, willing to press his button of rage. "We are still kids. When we discovered the true meaning of freedom, we relish it. That's we need to stop you from imprisoning children from freedom. We will make this vision of your crumble."

Loud booms throughout the compound rage as bombs were set off one after the other like dominoes. I smile as I know I gave them time and helped Mallory. The structure starts to crumble and the ground shakes.

Mallory grabs my hand and runs to the open door. We can make--

The gun goes off and pain seeps into my leg. I fall to the ground screaming in pain, dragging Mallory, too. Blood soaks the guard uniform, staining the blue fabric to red.

"You think you can escape after everything you have done?" Garrison snaps. "Your life shall pay the price of everything you caused--"

The sound of the gun goes off twice, but it did not come from Garrison's, but from Mallory's.

Garrison kneels on the floor and coughs blood. "Why--s-son... After all--"

Mallory carries me even as I wince from the bullet wound. "I know what you did to mother. With what you did and the way you conjure up a measly excuse in my expense to build this barbaric structure, I cannot forgive you for that. When you shoot and threaten Blaire, I know it is the last straw. Goodbye, father..."

More bombs explode around us and the building starts to crack and break. Small pieces of glass and stone fall down like hail. "Be careful, Mallory!" I say as he jumps over giant stones.

The open door at the end of the hallway stands as the border between us and the freedom we all long for.

The bright light gets closer. I look up at Mallory and his grey eyes glance down at me.

"We made it, Blaire."
