Chapter 13
Willing my body, I garner my thoughts and try to get ready. I conjure clothes I saw the guards wore during the fight.
I open my eyes to see the heavy and dark material throughout my body. It weighs me down and instantly makes me sweat. How in the world do they wear this?!
I included a black mask to conceal my face.
If Mallory has the same powers as me, he would have been able to travel to where he wants to. I try to imagine the battlefield. It is close enough to the North enemy territory.
The wind rushes past me, almost pulling my hood off. I close my eyes and wish my body to transport to the battlefield.
I open my eyes. The glass doors come into my view as well as other glass prisons from all sides. I stand up and look around. I'm back in my jail cell?!
I shut my eyes again. Sleep... Come on, sleep! I beg to some god in this world.
I bang on the tiled white floor. The only light in the room flickers above me. Strings of curses escape from my mouth. I kick the glass doors in anger. My hands travel up to my hair and clench them in my fists
"Stay silent. If that door alarms, we will all be in trouble," a girl hisses from the cell beside me.
I turn to see a familiar face come into view. "Dharine? Why are you here? Are you supposed to be with the other teens? Protecting them from your enemy?!"
A girl with sunken cheeks and blonde hair looks back at me. "Dharine? No... I am Diane..." she said, hoarsely. She coughs like it is hard for her to speak.
"I'm sorry... You look familiar to someone I know," I whisper. "I have just one question."
She scoffs. Her hazel eyes assess my figure before sighing. "You seem to have more than one question for me. Just ask away... I won't be able to ignore you if you pester anyway. "
I blink. Yeah, she is the version of Dharine in this world. Well, my world. "Well, first, where are we?"
She looks around with distant eyes. "We are in an experimental facility. Every child here is an orphan. I don't know what those freaks are testing us for, but they are doing something for someone..."
"What do you mean about that?" I press.
She raises both her hands and shrugs. "I don't know too much. They are highly secretive here, and if someone knows more what they should know," she gestures herself slitting her throat. "We never see them again."
"We?" I ask.
Two other kids come out of the dark. A dark-skinned male stands beside a tan-skinned male. They look a bit uncomfortable.
My eyes brighten. "Harold! Francis! You both are here too?!"
The two boys look at each other, then back to me with confusion.
"What? No, my name is Harry, and he is Fury," the boy with dark brown skin and dark, short curly hair points to the thinnest kid in the group.
Fury nods but stays quiet.
I look back at Dharine. "You said that people experiment on us here and that we are all..." I gulp. "Orphans. Where did we all start? We couldn't have been just born here."
All three of them shake their heads. "We don't know... We don't remember anything..."
"We could have been born here or maybe they all stole us like useless goods from an orphanage or two," Harry mutters.
Diane sighs. She picks on her long gray hospital gown that is similar to mine. "Stop going back to your depressed state, Har. It's useless by now,"
I tap my foot in desperation. I am surprised I regained feeling. "How about a guy named Mallory? Do you know him?"
Fury steps up after the other two steps back. He looks back at his traitor friends. He slouches and rubs his arms. "We knew him. He used to be here too with us."
"His real name is Mallory? No alias or any other name?" I ask, moving closer to the wall that blocks me and the group.
He looks like me like I am stupid. "I am sorry, but have you been living in a different world?"
My thumbs twiddle in front of me like a single-player thumb wrestling. Should I tell them? What could be the harm? "I-I-uh... I kinda am. I can travel through dreams and control myself. Dreams are actually different dimensions in the universe."
They look at me and laugh out loud. Even the silent Fury giggles softly.
"Wait. Wait. Wait! Hold up! You were saying you can travel to these dimensions?! That is the best joke I ever heard in my prison life!" Harry guffaws and smacks his leg. "Hilarious!"
I couldn't control my laughter. It comes out in crazy puffs of laughter. It seems that my chest couldn't handle too much air going in and out that it starts to hurt. But I couldn't help it.
They look at me again like I am an alien from a different planet. "You are weird..." Fury blurts out.
"You know what, I am weird," I said with a smile.
Diane is the first one to regain her composure. "We will believe you for now. Besides, you are close to Mallory. The second best as the top lab rats. The monsters liked all your results until you woke up, apparently."
Harry nods. "Yeah! When I was taken to a testing room, I overheard a conversation between a tall brown haired adult and a freak. They were talking about a cure!"
My brow furrows. "A cure for what?"
Red alarms blare in every cell. Metal doors start to close slowly in front of the glass ones.
Diane, Harry, and Fury seem to realize it too.
"Let's talk and plan more about this!" Diane shouts.
Fury waves solemnly. "Welcome to the facility," he mutters.
"If you ever leave, don't forget us!" Harry shouts as the final panel separates me from them and the other cells.
I sit in silence as I press a palm on my aching chest. Too much laughing for this body.
I look up at the ceiling, wondering what they meant. When I travel into his world, was I close to wherever Mallory was? Was this world mine or Mallory? Where could he be now?
Wherever he is, I know he is alive. I could feel it in my gut. I have to find him through his clues.
Time to dream a world. A world filled with the imaginary.
