#34 The Bride Dreams

Xemein

"Mother!"

"Brother!" My thirteen-years old self screamed. "Brother!"

I watched as a group of sorcerers - six men and five women - continued chanting indecipherable words to strengthen the spells of the dark magic, they were casting.

"Please! Save my brother too" I cried as a lean older man, Randall, held me within the circle the sorcerers had made, to protect themselves from the destruction that was befalling Marjol.

"Father!" I wailed. Tears running down my cheeks. As I saw my father for the last time. Sinking into the grounds. As the earth opened up to take him. And my mother. And two-years old brother, Lance.

"Lance!" The cry rang out of me. And for a long long time, I couldn't stop screaming.

I woke up with a start. A cold chill running down my body. Lance. My heart wept. He was so little. How would sorcery have impacted his health?

I can't let him suffer anymore. My heart determined. He mustn't suffer for even one more day.

My heart thundered, like it could thunder its way right out of my ribs.

I placed my hand on the wooden stand beside our bed, where Regalis sometimes left his sheath knives. I picked one up. Removed the sheath. And faced my sleeping husband.

He's not your husband. He's someone who must die for thousands to live. My mind screamed.

Thousands! Xemein.

Thousands!

My hands shook.

For Lance to live, he has to die.

For you to see your father and mother again, he needs to perish.

Regalis rolled on the bed. His hand, resting on my thigh.

Don't let memories of his touch confuse you, Xemein! My brains fired.

He needs to die. If not for anyone else, but at least, for Lance!

My heart ached.

I lifted the blade. My body panting, every second I held it. Apart from the time I held a blade to end Hunter's life, every other time I used one, was to save a life. Heat it against a fire, and then use it to cut a patient, to pull out the head or barb of an arrow.

I watched Regalis as he slept on. He looked so beautiful. He was the only one I knew who could look tired, and at the same time, remain stunning to look at. Stunningly tired.

My heart broke into halves. Sleeping with his guard down near me, because he trusts me.

For Lance. My mind whispered one more time.

And I lifted the blade higher. Aiming for my husband's chest.

Tonight, it'll all be over.
