65. We find Diana... but we're not alone

"Is he here?" asks Kalen, standing with me in front of Saint Thomson's door.

Thanks to the President we made it to the orphanage in less than an hour, using one of his fancy cars to avoid traffic. Mara and team A stayed behind with Jayson and Cassie at the Mar, keeping an eye on Khan. He may be innocent, but that doesn't mean he's completely off the hook. We need to make sure he won't go running to the council to report what we did to him.

The orphanage looks exactly like it did in my visions. It's an older building, with brick walls and a stone roof, with columns and trim that make it look more like a Greek temple than an orphanage. It has a large rod iron gate that we had to drive through to get to the entrance, driving past the sign that reads "SAINT THOMSON'S HOME FOR CHILDREN" It's located in the middle of a large field, grassy hills covered with all kinds of flowers going as far as the eye can see, which must have been where I saw the children playing. It's a lovely location, and I can't think of a better place for these kids to live.

Daniel shrugs at Kalen's question, looking around, trying to find any sign of Dominic.

"There weren't any other vehicles when we came in, so I'm willing to bet we got here before him. But just in case don't let your guard down, stay alert and remember your training."

Kalen and I nod, watching as our mentor knocks on the giant wooden doors. We wait, and about two minutes later a little old lady appears before us. I recognize her as the woman from my vision, and I swallow past the lump in my throat, remembering her lifeless body on the floor. Looking at her now I can tell she isn't as old as I had originally thought, probably early sixties. She has grey hair and kind brown eyes, but they observed us with caution.

"Hello ma'am, my name is Daniel Ravenson, from the Landa compound, we are here on official council business sent by the President himself."

Rose, that's what Diana had called the woman, frowns, closing the door slightly. I recognize the signs instantly, how her eyes dart between us and over her shoulder, the way she clutches the door tighter and purses her lips together, forcing a smile. She is ready to close the door on us and run at any given second, probably on strict orders from Khan to keep Diana safe from any unexpected visitors. Before Daniel has a chance to scare her off, I step towards her, trying to look as non-threatening as possible. I hide my gloved hands behind my back.

"Hello Rose," I say. "My name is Brianna, I'm Diana's friend."

Rose's mouth opens in shock, and she seems even more concerned than before. Daniel is also staring at me in surprise, but his reaction is much better hidden than Rose's. Kalen doesn't seem to be bothered by my sudden bouts of knowledge anymore, he probably already figured out I had gotten her name from my vision.

"How do you know my name?" Asks the woman, warry.

I smile, trying to put her at ease.

"Diana told me! She wanted me to know where she was in case of an emergency, and she knew you wouldn't believe me if I told you, so she told me your name. We are here to help her, not harm her."

Now Kalen frowns at me, not remembering any of what I was saying from our conversation with Diana. I look at him with a forced smile, urging him to play along. He nods, and a friendly look appearing on his face as well. Meanwhile Daniel just stands silently at our side, clearly not used to his students taking charge of situations such as these.

"We are here to take Diana back home," says Kalen, drawing Rose's attention towards him.

"There has been an emergency and her life is in danger. Please, could you take us to her?"

Rose stares at us in confusion, obviously not having expected a complete stranger to come to her doorstep and demand to see the president's daughter. But she is a clever woman and doesn't let us in that easily.

"And how on earth am I supposed to know if you are telling me the truth?"

My smile falters. I hadn't expected her to turn us away, so I wrack my brain for a solution. When I finally come up with something, I dig around my mission pack and fish out my TekPad, showing Rose the number on the screen.

"Diana gave me her number in case I ever needed to contact her," I press on the number and hold up the device as it rings. "I'll call her, and you can see that what we are telling you is true."

We all stare at the TekPad I hold in my hand, and after three agonizing seconds when I'm sure she won't pick up and just ignore my call, ruining our chances of helping her, the ringing stops.

"Sofia?"

I try not to let my relief show as I smile at Rose, who is staring at the TekPad with a mixture of shock and embarrassment. Thankfully she hasn't picked up on the annoyed tone of Diana's voice, or the fact that the name I told Rose is different to the one Diana just used.

"I'm so sorry," she says, opening the door to usher us inside. "I was given strict orders not to let anyone in while Diana was here. I never imagined someone would come looking for her if anything ever happened."

I nod, realizing too late that we aren't the only ones hearing Rose's voice.

"Rose? Wait a second, what's going on here?"

I wince at her accusing tone, not forgetting how mad she had been at us the last time we saw her, and quickly hang up before she can ask any more questions.

"See?" I tell Rose, putting the TekPad away.

"Now will you please take us to her? We need to get her away from here as soon as possible"

Rose still seems a bit hesitant, probably having noticed how I suddenly just hung up on Diana, but she leads us through the orphanage nonetheless, guiding us towards the back of the house.

"Diana is out with the children, like she usually is at this time of day."

We follow her through the house, passing by familiar doors and paintings that I recognize from my vision, and we make it to the back of the house, walking into a beautiful garden as Rose pushes open a large set of French doors.

I spot Diana almost immediately. She's in the same spot she was in during my vision, helping Declan down from the large stone wall. The little boy runs off once he is safely on the ground, and Diana smiles after him fondly. But her smile disappears when she turns around, spotting the three of us and Rose. I wave sheepishly, drawing in my shoulders as she makes her way to us, hands on her hips, eyebrows arched.

"What on earth are you doing here?" she hisses once she is close enough, anger and confusion radiation off her in waves.

She looks to Rose, probably wondering why the old woman let us in, before Daniel takes a step towards her and stands before her. Diana stares at him with a worried look on her face, probably wondering why I brought a strange man to the orphanage she had sworn to keep secret, trusting me with the information.

"Miss Khan, it is a pleasure to finally meet you." He says, inclining his head slightly in respect. "I'm afraid we have come to take you back home. There has been an unfortunate occurance, and we need you to come with us right away."

Diana takes a step back, hand flying up to cover her mouth. She looks at me then, the implication of our visit sinking in, and before I get a chance to reassure her that everything is under control her mind jumps to the worst possible conclusion.

"Is it my father? Has something happened?"

I shake my head, and Kalen jumps in to explain the situation to her.

"We have reason to believe that someone is going to try and kidnap you. Your father sent us to bring you back to the Mar."

Diana's eyes widen, and yet she doesn't seem as scared as someone that is about to get kidnapped should be. I'm about to ask her why she wouldn't answer my texts when I spot a black van pulling up to the orphanage. I feel my heart leap into my throat, fear washing over me like a bucket of cold water. I'm vaguely aware of Rose speaking in the background, but I can't seem to focus on her words.

"Don't you worry dear," she says, taking Diana's hand in her own wrinkly one. "They're from the Landa compound, they will take good care of you."

Diana's eyes shoot up in confusion, as she looks between Kalen and I, mistrust shining in her eyes.

"I thought you said--"

"Daniel," I say, ignoring Kalen's rushed "we'll explain everything later," which seems to do nothing to ease the President's daughters worries.

My mentor looks at me, and I point at the van that has just parked itself on the faraway hill. He follows my finger and curses when he spots the vehicle.

Time's up.

He's here.
