64. I have a vision that takes my breath away

Khan types something on his computer before turning the screen around, showing us a picture of a man that looks exactly like him, sitting in a chair, smiling at the camera. The only difference between the two being the scar that runs across Dominic's right eye.

"He was a good man," says Khan, looking at the picture with longing burning behind his eyes. "He had always been misunderstood. My father tried to turn me against him, told me horrible lies, and tried to convince me that Dominic wanted me dead. He blamed him for the death of our mother you see, it was because of his Gift that she died. Skin so toxic to the touch that it killed anything it came in contact within seconds."

I hear someone gasp, and I can't tell if its Cassie or myself. The room is spinning so I have a hard time focusing on his words. Nevertheless, I listen, wanting to understand the story fully.

"My father was not kind towards Dominic. He is the one that gave him that scar, on my thirteenth birthday, when I snuck some cake to him in his room," he scoffs "although it was more like a cell. Then when he was old enough Dominic left and never looked back, and I didn't blame him. But I worried. Who would be with a man that killed everything that he touched? That's when he met Hera."

He smiles, and shows us another picture, this time it's of Dominic and a woman. It looks like it's their wedding day, judging by her dress and the size of his smile. The woman is stunning, with long glossy brown hair and eyes the color of hot chocolate. Her skin is sun-kissed, cheeks rosy from blush, and her smile is dazzling as she hugs her husband. The white dress and flower crown on her head make her look like a goddess, and if someone were to tell me that that is what Aphrodite looks like, I would believe them.

"She was a Shield, her skin made it impossible for her to be injured. That also meant that Dominic's toxin couldn't get into her bloodstream."

I try to focus on Khan, but my vision is starting to get blurry, darkness eating at the edges.

"It seemed like a match made by the gods, and yet, even then my brother had to suffer. It turned out she wasn't completely immune to his poison; she just took much longer to succumb to it than a normal person would. She died the day their daughter was born, and Dominic was devastated. He didn't want to touch Ila for fear that he would kill her. For days he just watched as the doctors did test after test, pacing the hallways of the hospital like a ghost. When the doctors said that Ila had been lucky, that she had inherited her mother's Gift at the time of birth and was stronger than her mother had been, Dominic was overjoyed. He was still cautious though, wore gloves every time he was with her, he even created a special suit for himself that covered every inch of his skin."

He sighs, looking at us sadly.

"That still wasn't enough to save his daughter. It turns out she was a Shield, but the doctors got one key aspect wrong. She was weaker than her mother was. It only took a few moments of forgetfulness on Dominic's part, one too many times that he touched her without his gloves. She died on her sixteenth birthday."

"So that's why he killed the doctors," says Mara, remembering what Kalen and I had told the team when Christian had told us about Dominic's story. "Because if they had warned him about her Gift, or had determined it properly, she would still be alive."

The president nods, brown hair flopping in front of his eyes. Is it just me, or are the colors in the room starting to blend together? And where is that ringing coming from?

"I begged the council to spare him. He was my little brother! And yet, they overlooked my decision. I was powerless to stop them. I watched as they sentenced my brother to death and suffered the consequences later. But- he adds, a puzzled look to his face -I still don't understand how he could be alive! I watched him die! I watched as they..."

Suddenly he goes silent, staring off into the distance as if an idea just suddenly popped up in his brain.

"What is it?" Asks Laura, who has been standing with her team, speaking up for the first time since we got back from the factory.

"They injected him with poison," he whispers, "a lethal substance that creates no pain, it's like going to sleep. And yet if his skin was poisonous--"

"Who is to say he wasn't immune to all kinds of poison," finishes Daniel, seeing where the President is going with his rant.

"So, he could be alive?" Asks Khan, an almost hopeful tone to his voice. But the rest of his sentence is lost to me.

Yep, the ringing is defiantly there. I look around, but no one else seems to hear it. I clutch my head as I stumble. I hold on to the closest person next to me, finding a worried Cassie grab me with steady hands.

"Bri?" She asks, concern shining in her sea-green eyes.

I mumble something, something I can't quite make out, my mouth feels like its full of cotton and my tongue doesn't seem to want to cooperate. I feel someone take my arm and guide me onto one of the chairs, before my eyes roll into the back of my head.

When I open them again, I'm back in the meadow, the orphanage, watching as Diana talks to the strange man. Yet now, unlike the last time I watched this exact same scene unfold, I can see his face perfectly. Every little detail, from the stubble on his chin to the scar running over his right eye.

"How can you not remember me?" he says sadly, gloved hands falling onto Diana's shoulder.

I want to scream at her, to tell her to run, but no sound makes it out of my mouth. Diana just stares, mouth opening and closing as realization finally dawns on her, the identity of the man in front of her taking place in her mind.

"Uncle?"

It's barely above a whisper, yet Dominic and I both hear it perfectly. A large smile spreads across the man's face, and yet it looks more like a grimace than a grin. The happiness I could feel from him in the picture is gone, replaced by darkness and hatred and fear. I shudder, trying to get closer, but I freeze where I stand. Dominic is looking straight at me. Not through me, like everyone else in my vision, he looks right at me.

"Well," he purrs, taking his hand off Diana's shoulder, who doesn't move, just keeps staring ahead, almost as if she were frozen in time.

"This is an interesting turn of events."

My feet don't want to move, almost as if they were rooted to the ground, but then my instincts kick in and I start to run, away from the madman that is following me. I throw open the door of the orphanage, stumbling into a large hall, but I don't stop to marvel at the intricate tiled floor or the big domed ceiling. Instead I keep running, looking back to find that Dominic is strolling calmly towards me. But he isn't alone. A boy, who looks like he could be younger than Ash, has his hand on Dominic's elbow and is seemingly guiding him through the house.

"She's like me," I hear him whisper, his cold eyes staring right at me.

I stifle my scream, even though no noise would have come out of my mouth anyway.

I run down one of the halls, taking turn after turn as I try to shake Dominic and the zombie child off my trail. That's when I remember that none of this is real, that this is all happening in my head, as I run through one of the walls. Passing through like smoke.

"But if this is all in my head, then how can they see me?"

I scan the room that I have ended up in and luckily find no trace of Diana's crazy uncle or the boy, but I hear someone talking, and get closer to the closed doors. I open them, leaving them slightly ajar, and I peek through the crack to find myself staring at the old woman, Rose, and a man dressed in the same strange suit that Dominic is wearing, but in a dark shade of blue. For some reason the man seems familiar, but I can't tell who he is because his face is covered by a mask. The mask itself isn't anything fancy, but it looks like it was custom made to fit his face, as it isn't held by any strings, yet it stays up, covering the mans features perfectly. Rose is speaking to him calmly, but I can tell she is scared by the way she clutches her hands behind her back so tightly that her knuckles turn white. I can hear the man say something, and Rose barely has time to gasp before he brings out a gun and shoots her right in the middle of her forehead. My hand flies to my mouth, as I watch the masked man walk over Rose's body and into the yard, where the children and Diana are playing. Once I'm sure he's gone I run to the woman, watching as blood pools under her lifeless body, eyes staring emptily at the ceiling.

I feel my stomach churn uncomfortably, never having seen a dead body before, yet I ignore my discomfort and get up, following the path the man took to the yard, finding him and Dominic standing with Diana. The boy is nowhere to be seen, and I don't know if I should be relieved or warry.

"Don't worry," says Dominic, guiding Diana into the orphanage. "We will explain everything once we make it to a safer location."

He caresses her cheek, and she starts to struggle when the masked man starts dragging her towards the orphanage. She cries out when she spots Rose's lifeless body on the ground, and tears start rolling down her face.

"What have you done!" she cries, fighting to escape their hold. "You're not my uncle, let me go! You can't be him, you can't! He's dead!"

Her hair covers her face as she thrashes, but I can still make out her blue eyes, filled with anguish and tears. The masked man manages to get her out the front door, and I follow behind them carefully, making sure I'm not spotted again. He directs Diana towards a black van, very similar to our own, as Dominic just laughs behind her.

"Dead? But darling, don't you see, I'm alive! I always have been." he smiles, but there is something about it that makes me think he isn't quite all there.

"Brianna!"

I wince, stiffening, sure that Dominic has heard the voice as well. But he just keeps walking, following his niece towards the van.

"Not now." I hiss, clutching my head.

I watch as they pull Diana into the back of the black van, and I remember now that it is the same van I had seen in my previous vision. I had ignored it because it didn't seem important at the time. How could I have been so stupid!

"Bri!"

My grasp on the vision loosens, and I struggle to stay in my head, watching what happens next. Just as the two men drive off, I open my eyes, gasping as if I had been underwater for too long. The world spins for a second until I get my bearings, and I stare groggily at the people in front of me.

"Finally."

Mara is leaning over me, and she helps me sit up so that I can catch my breath. Kalen is perched next to me, anxiously watching as I rise, a hand on the small of my back to guide me into a sitting position.

"Are you okay?" he asks, worry shining in his gray eyes.

I nod, patting his shoulder.

"Don't worry, you guys should be used to my visions by now."

He nods, frown deepening as he watches me carefully.

"I wouldn't worry, but then you stopped breathing."

My eyes widen a fraction. So that's why I felt so out of breath. Huh, well that hasn't happened before.

"It could have been because the vision was longer than my previous ones, I wouldn't worry about it too much," I tell him, but even then, I start running through possible explanations in my head.

"Are you sure you're okay?"

I look at my mentor, who is watching me with a serious look on his face, and I nod. He stretches out his hand and I take it gratefully, accepting his help and standing, albeit shakily, on my own two feet. I wobble for a second before I finally find my balance. It takes way more effort than I would have liked, and I'm breathless by the time I'm fully upright.

"I saw him," I say, elaborating further when Daniel raises a questioning eyebrow at me.

"Dominic, I saw him. Khan is telling the truth."

Kalen stands next to Daniel so he can look me in the eyes, still keeping a hand on my shoulder to hold me steady.

"What did you see?" he asks, ignoring the President's questions in the background.

"He finds Diana," I say, looking at Khan. "He is going to try and kidnap her."

Silence settles in the room, the only sound being that of my ragged breathing. The president looks like he's about to pass out, but he manages to compose himself, taking a deep breath through his nose and bringing a hand to rest on his forehead.

"What is she talking about?" he asks, directing himself at Daniel, ignoring me completely.

I cross my arms over my chest, frown settling on my face. I am standing right here.

Daniel looks troubled as if he is debating whether he should tell the President or not, but I wasn't about to let someone speak for me, so I direct myself at Khan and say...

"She is standing right here, and can answer your question perfectly well. I can see the future." I say, feeling smug, feeling even better when the President's mouth falls open in shock.

"She is the daughter of Thomas Acero," adds Daniel, and I watch, confused, as the President's eyes go comically wide.

He looks at me then, his confusion turning to shock, and shock turning to guilt. He looks between Daniel and myself, and I spot my mentor give a subtle shake of his head.

"What? What's the matter?" I ask, confused by their behavior.

Khan looks like he's kicking himself over something, but in the end, he just shakes his head, looking at me sadly.

"I knew your father," he says. "He was a great man. I'm sorry for... I'm sorry."

Just how many people knew my father?! It seems like he was more popular than I gave him credit for. I wonder if Diana had known him, seeing as her father did. I wonder if she ever got to see him, on one of those rare occasions he would be sent on missions to the capital.

I sigh.

There is nothing I can do to bring my father back; it was too late for him. But it isn't too late for Diana, so she is my top priority right now. I block out Daniels odd looks, and the guilt that is shining in Khans eyes, and turn to my teammates instead.

"We need to get to Saint Thomson's orphanage," I say, heading towards the door, ignoring their worried stares.

"We need to stop Dominic before it's too late."
