56. Jayson gets in trouble at the Mar

Six weeks. Six weeks of frantic searching, of grasping at straws. Six weeks since Cassie and Jayson came back to us, six weeks since they had to leave once again. Asher has been trying to hack every file, every software, any device that might give us some clues. Mara has been reading every file that Christian gave us, every article and letter that might seem of use. Even Daniel back at the compound has been helping us out as best as he can, trying to find out if anyone back home could be working for the enemy. Christian is trusting us to fulfill this mission, he's sent us so many encouraging messages that I've started to lose count. He must also be stressed out about the whole situation, desperation tinting the words that he writes to us.

"The sooner we catch him, the sooner our problems will be solved. The sooner we can avenge that which was taken from us."

Quinn. We haven't forgotten about her sacrifice to the compound, about her bravery. And we aren't the only ones that have lost people we care about. Asher told us a few weeks back why his team volunteered for the mission, why it is so important to the three of them. One of their best friends died in the same mysterious way Quinn had, just outside of another abandoned power plant. Kind of like the location that Jack and his team had gone to investigate not so long ago.

Diana is already at the orphanage, and I haven't had a vision since she left. She still won't talk to me, ignoring all my texts, but that isn't what is worrying me most. Cassie has been keeping us posted on the newest events at the Mar and tells us everything that has been going on. She said it's chaos, the President has increased security and was interrogating every one of his guards, staff, and council members. The problem was, three spies were in that group of people, and if the president found them out, everything we worked so hard for, would be over. Cassie had already passed the interrogation, and it looked like her cover held strong, now we just needed to worry about Xavier and Jayson.

Speaking of which, it looks like he and Mara finally worked out whatever it was that was going on between them. The night they came to visit us I saw him and Mara sitting together on the sofa. I heard him whisper something in her ear before he leaned in and planted a soft kiss on her temple. She snuggled closer to him, burrowing into his side, and I quietly backpedaled, not wanting to intrude on their privacy. The next morning, I caught Mara smiling to herself in the mirror, and I knew everything had been sorted out.

But now none of us are smiling. Kalen is practically a furnace, the stress making his body temperature rise, Ash is constantly on his computer, and I had to physically drag him out of his chair more than once and force him to sleep. Mara and I, well, we are handling the situation a bit better than the boys.

"Still nothing?" Asks Mara, coming into our shared room.

I had been trying to trigger a vision for the past two hours, but nothing was happening. No matter how many times I read over my great great great grandfathers book, or how many times I looked at pictures of the President and his family.

"Nada," I say, frustrated by my lack of success.

"Don't worry, we will find something eventually. We just have to be patient and...."

"Guys! I think I got something!"

Asher's voice makes it to our room, loud and clear. Mara's mouth falls open, and she stares at me in shock. It takes me a moment to get going, but once I am, I'm stumbling out the door, hot on Mara's heels as we run to the boys' room. Ash is staring at his computer, the same shocked expression we are wearing painting his features. You could probably hear a pin drop with how quiet we are, waiting for him to speak.

"Look. There is a pattern. I think I finally figured it out!" He exclaims, ecstatic.

His eyes light up with hope, as he turns the computer around in his lap. I sit down in front of him on the floor, and Mara copies my position, crossing her legs in front of her.

"I had been looking into recent deaths caused by our mystery killer in the different compounds of our area, and they all seemed to happen near abandoned warehouses or factories. I didn't know what this had to do with anything until the latest death occurred four days ago."

I wince. I remember hearing about that. Another young Elite, younger than Quinn had been, was found dead by her compound when they had discovered she was missing. She had been sent on a patrol mission and hadn't come back. Her death was a low blow for all of us, a reminder of the power that this man possesses. It's almost like he's mocking us, becoming more and more confident every time he makes an appearance.

"Well," continues Ash, "she was found outside an old nuclear plant, and I started to wonder. You had told me that your compound saw Simon Says getting barrels of RII, so I started to think, what if they weren't after the teams of Elites, what if they were just after the RII, and we've been getting in their way?"

My eyebrows furrow in confusion. What would anyone want to do with such a big amount of RII?

"But, how does that help our situation?" Says Kalen, just as lost as I'm feeling. "So what if they are after the RII, that doesn't take away from the fact that they are killing our own."

Asher huffs.

"You think I don't know that." He snaps "Don't forget that I lost my best friend to this man."

His comment makes me flinch, but Kalen remains stoic, though I can tell that his words have affected him as well. He nods, allowing the boy to continue.

"Anyways," he says, sending a pointed look Kalen's way. "I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner, probably because I wasn't focused on the locations and more on the people, but one of the power plants where they kept the RII was abandoned pretty recently. The security system is still functional, which means..."

"You can access the cameras and see who was there." Exclaims Mara, understanding what Ash is implying.

He sighs. "Way to steal my thunder," he mumbles, and Mara winces, apologizing.

"But yes, I can try and hack their system. And that's not all, I've found a pattern. They've been stealing from all the buildings that at some point had used or carried RII surrounding this area, and each time they seem to be getting closer and closer to," He points at the map he just brought up on his screen.

"The Darmond Prison." I mumble.

Ash nods enthusiastically.

"What if they are planning on attacking the prison?" He says "That's where all the most dangerous criminals are held, and I wouldn't be surprised if one or two had been working for our mystery man in the past."

Maybe, but that still doesn't explain the amount of RII they were stealing. Unless...

"Hadn't there been an attempt to free the prisoners fifty years ago, but it went south and even more people ended up in jail?" I ask, getting everyone's attention.

"They used bombs and hid them all over the perimeter of the prison, waiting for them to detonate. What if they need all that RII to build more bombs. What if they are going to try again?"

Silence falls over the room, and the tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife.

"If that's true, we need to stop them at their next RII pick up, and catch these rogues once and for all," says Kalen, getting up from the bed he had been sitting on. Ash closes his computer, nodding.

"And I think I know where they will be heading next. There is an old medical facility about two hours away from here, and it fits the pattern they've been following so far. If we get lucky, we may be able to intercept them."

I nod, pushing myself up from the floor, dusting off my pants.

"Okay, new plan," I say, already seeing the pieces coming together in my head. "Ash will stay here and try to hack into the factories system. Kalen, Mara, and I will contact Landa and tell them what we've found. Hopefully they'll send back up and come with us, if not, we will have to go alone."

My friends nod in agreement, determination in all our eyes. This is our chance, we are finally getting somewhere with our mission. We need to tell Jayson and Cassie. Ash probably wants to tell his teammates as well.

"I'm going to contact Cassie, tell her what we've found. Ash, you try and contact Xavier or Anna."

He nods, already heading to the kitchen to grab his TekPad.

"On it."

I take out my device once he's disappeared, pulling it into my lap and setting it on video call. It rings a couple times before Cassie's face comes into view, but instead of the excited reaction I had been expecting, I'm met with her worried gaze.

"Cass, what's wrong?" I ask, noticing her distress even across the screen.

"Jayson is getting interrogated," she says, and instantly Mara stiffens. "It's taking longer than usual, and I'm starting to get worried."

Crap, that isn't good. We all know that Jayson isn't a great liar, at least not when he is unprepared, but I didn't think it would be a problem on our mission. He's good enough, but if he is getting a proper interrogation, then that may be a problem. What if he gets caught?

"He'll be fine," says Mara, though I can tell she says it more for herself than for the rest of us. "I'm sure he'll be out any second."

Cassie sighs and looks behind her, moving from her spot and closing the door to the room she's in before we continue our conversation.

"So, why did you call?" She asks, green eyes boring into mine.

"We have a lead on where the rogue Elite will be, thanks to Asher and his hacking skills. We are going to be contacting the compound shortly to tell them what we found."

Her eyes widen, and a shadow of a smile stretches across her lips as she momentarily forgets her fear for our friend.

"Finally," she sighs, just as relieved as all of us. "Keep me posted on what happens. And be careful!" She says. She turns around again, this time faster than before, and faces the TekPad with worry in her eyes.

"Someone is coming, I have to go. Good luck." And with that, she cuts the connection.

I stare at the black screen a minute longer before shutting off the device completely and shoving it back into my pocket.

"Ash!" I call, waiting for the boy to come back into the room. He emerges only a few seconds later, TekPad still in hand.

"Try to get in touch with Anna, we need her to check out the location to see if the black string is there. I'm willing to bet anything that it is our killers string."

Asher nods, placing the TekPad to his ear and waiting for Anna to pick up.

"Anna," he says, and I hear her voice filter through the speakers of the device. "Listen, we have a lead on where the rogue Elite is heading next, we need you to check it out to see if he's been there recently. I'm sending you the location now."

He fiddles with his TekPad, presumably sending her the coordinates, and puts it back next to his ear.

"Did you get it?" He asks, waiting for his teammate to answer. When nothing is heard from the other end a frown finds its way into his face.

"Anna?" He asks again, this time a bit louder. We hear her voice come over the speakers, but whatever she says makes his frown deepen.

"What do you mean you're there now?"
