Chapter 6:
Jenna was the blond woman walking with Ezra on the street, and his tongue was down her throat. His hands were all over her body, taking every inch of her into him.
I dropped the glass in my hand and it shattered against the bar. He looked up at the sound and his icy blue eyes met mine and opened wide in surprise. I lowered my eyes and quickly began fumbling around, trying to clean up the broken glass. Jenna pulled him by his shirt collar to the bar to get his drink.
"Ezra, baby. This is Riley. She is my new friend." She leaned all over him with her hands rubbing his torso and her fingers moved over the spot where his music notes hid. I looked up and tried to force a smile, not sure how this was going to play out. Obviously, he hadn't told her about me or she would have recognized my name. It wasn't a very common name.
"Hey." He said, staring at me. I don't know if it was because I was losing my mind or if it was because I wanted him to, but he looked like he was staring at me the way he used to so long ago. I suddenly got very self-conscious about my appearance and tugged at the short tank top, trying to cover my exposed skin. He looked strong, handsome, and solid. He looked like he was the type of man for her that he couldn't be for me. It broke my heart, watching how much better he was without me in his life.
It looked like he really decided to ditch his piercings. When I saw him on the street, I wasn't sure if it was just that he took them out that day or if he never wore them. Maybe it was a symbolic gesture to get rid of all the bad and wash himself clean for her. Somehow, he was even more gorgeous without them. How was that even possible? It wasn't fair that he got to be better and I was stuck in the same place three years later.
I nodded in his direction. It was all I could manage to do. I needed to escape.
"Baby, I got your drink." Jenna said, handing him the glass I poured.
Ezra didn't drink anymore?
That was surprising.
He took the glass from her and pressed it to his soft pink lips. I watched him, remembering how those lips felt against mine, all fire and desire.
"You ready to play, babe?" She asked, leaning into him. He wrapped his arm around her and pulled her closer.
My eyes went wide. Not only was he in the bar tonight, but he was in the freaking band. My life couldn't be any more like a bad soap opera.
"Yeah, I'm ready." Ezra kissed her on the top of her head while keeping his eyes on me. Chills ran through my body at the gesture. It was like he wanted me to see him touch her. "I think one of the guys said we were up soon. I just came up to check-in. Why don't you go to your seat and I can finish up so we can get started."
"Love you." Jenna squeezed him one more time and then ran to go back to her friends. He watched her until she got out of earshot and then turned to me.
"Been a long time, Ry." Ezra stood there, staring at me. He pulled his mouth into his wicked half-smile.
"Uh, yeah," I said back to him, looking into his icy blue eyes. The flames I loved so much flashed across them and then he shook them away, breaking my trance. "Well, it was nice seeing you again. I should get back to work. The drinks don't pour themselves."
I shifted to move away from him and his hand went over mine. My body tensed at his touch and the familiar ache for him started to build in the pit of my stomach. I always had no sense when it came to Ezra and my body didn't prove me wrong now.
"Riley, I've got to check in still." He reminded me, laughing as he watched me squirm.
"You're good. All checked in. Yep, one band here. You're all set." I said, trying to get away from him. He shook his head at me.
"The paperwork?" He laughed.
"Oh, crap." I hit my hand against my head way too hard. I rubbed the spot that was probably already candy apple red.
"You're still you, I see." He smiled.
"That makes one of us." I said and then bit my tongue. I threw the paper and pen at him to sign the agreement hoping he didn't hear me.
He took the pen and signed his name at the bottom without even hesitating.
"You really should read things before you sign them." I scolded him, sounding like my Mother.
"I read it last week when Jules gave me a copy before our last show." He slid the paper and pen over to me and I snatched it out of his hands. Jules had him here last week and didn't even say anything to me? I had half a mind to walk out on him right now. I was going to rip him a new one the next time I talk to him.
"We should talk." Ezra leaned in and whispered, far too close to my ear. I could smell the mint on his warm breath.
"I don't think we should." I said back softly. Images of the little girl with the curly dark hair and light blue eyes invaded my thoughts. I wasn't just protecting myself now. I had to protect her too.
"Come on, Riley. I think there are some things we need to talk about." He said, backing away from me.
"There is absolutely nothing in this world that we need to discuss." I said, frowning. My phone buzzed in my pocket and I pulled it out to see who it was.
Ezra looked down and then back up to me when he saw Jessa's picture on my lock screen. She was smiling while blowing a kiss at the camera.
"Who is that?" He asked me, snatching the phone out of my hand to look at her picture. "I saw you with her the other day on the street."
His eyebrow rose and he was lost in his curiosity. Maybe he hadn't put anything together yet. It was beyond obvious to me because every little thing she did, every little facial expression reminded me of him.
"My friend's little girl." I answered trying to snatch my phone back from him. My phone buzzed again and he looked down at the message prompt and back up to me.
He threw the phone back in my direction and I picked it up to read the message.
Mom: Jessa just got her bath and I am tucking her in now. She says to tell you Goodnight, Momma.
"Who is she?" Ezra asked again through clenched teeth.
I would let him know she's mine, but that was all he would get from me. I would lie to him to get him out of my life for good if I had to.
"Fine, yes. She's my daughter." I told him, trying to brush it off like it was no big deal.
"How old is she, Riley?" He asked. He didn't fall for my short answers; he never did. I forgot how good he was at getting what he wants from me.
"Look, it's just me tonight and I am swamped here, Ezra. I need to get back to work. Your band looks like it is going on soon. You should go up and start getting ready." I tried to move away from him. My stomach turned sour, remembering the last time he was angry with me.
"How old?" He questioned again with his jawline tensing. The sudden realization spread to his face and the hardness fell away. Shit, he was trying to figure this out. He looked like he was replaying memories of the two of us together so many times before I ran from him. We were stupid and didn't use protection often enough. I wasn't on birth control either. He was mentally adding it all up.
"She's three." I sighed, giving in and giving him what he asked for. He jerked back immediately in shock. I was pretty sure deep down he already knew the answer and that was why he was asking. He was looking like I just smacked him across the face. Jessa looked exactly like him and only an idiot would not have put two and two together. His family's genes were strong. I knew this, but I still had to try to convince him he was not her father.
"She's not...shit...is she? Ry..." He began to stutter.
"Don't worry, Ezra, she's not yours." I pretended to roll my eyes and laugh at him. In a way, I believed the lie. She wasn't his baby girl. She was mine. I made her and I gave birth to her. She belonged to me.
"Who then?" He asked. His anger was boiling over. Ezra was picturing me with someone else. I needed to make this as clean of a break as possible. I had to hurt him as much as he hurt me so he would walk away and never look back.
"Aiden's." I crossed my arms over my chest. My cheeks flushed from my lie and I looked away when I said it. I hoped that he couldn't read that I was lying all over my face.
Ezra pulled his lips tight and shook his head up and down. He was trying to wrap his head around the thought of Aiden and me together. He had accused me of being with him so many times. The lie was easy because it just validated his paranoid suspicions.
"Three years ago, huh?" He was doing the math in his head. "So that means you fucked him when we were together?"
His eyes darkened as they narrowed at me. I readied myself for my last parting blow to him. He would never want to try to contact me again after this.
"Before, during, after, and anytime I could." I smile wickedly, trying to look unremorseful.
"I guess Brynn was right back then. You are a fucking slut." He said with anger in his eyes. I could see the beautiful broken boy trying to slip through. He hated me now, which was for the best.
"Yeah, and it was so much fun."
Mic drop.
I should take a bow for the performance I was putting on tonight.
Ezra stared at me and he clenched his fists. Maybe he hadn't changed or maybe I just brought the worst out of him. He wanted to something. Probably me. Either way, I needed to get out of here. I had to get away from him.
"Your fiancé and band are waiting for you. Congratulations, I hope you two will have a long, happy marriage." I spat, pointing in her direction. Ezra turned right when Jenna scowled as she took in the exchange between us. I took the opportunity to duck from behind the bar and slip away into the back.
"Kiera, man the bar. I'm on break." I yelled as I flew past her.
