BREATHE
Ten.
Hands shaking, deep breaths in and out.
I wasn't ready.
My stomach felt as if it had turned into a knots.
I was so nervous I could throw up.
My foot jiggled in my chair and I fiddled with my bracelet.
Nine.
I steadied my breaths, trying to keep them from wavering.
Bright lights were blinding, and the air stunk of alcohol.
Every person here told a story.
One that they would eventually have to face, even me.
This moment would mark their future: Forever.
Eight.
My palms were sweaty and I felt more anxious than ever.
Hearing voices of people yelling; in joy or anger I wasn't sure.
It was as if my entire world depended on just one second.
It was crazy that great things take so much time to achieve.
But the bad? It can happen in the blink of an eye.
Seven.
I was wondering why it was taking so long.
I selfishly wished that it wasn't me, but someone else.
Why me? I asked myself in frustration.
What did I do that was so wrong?
My question would remain unanswered.
Six.
I was about to go; fighting two battles at once.
I would never be prepared.
I didn't think that anyone could be or ever would be.
To me it was unfathomable.
It was the air I breathed how could I just stop?
Five.
They said that I was going to be okay.
That it wasn't the end of the world.
It was a lie; I would never be okay again.
They had told me the one thing I didn't want to hear:
I would never be able to Swim again.
Four.
Swimming mainly took four things.
The skills to swim as efficiently as possible.
The motivation and willingness to sacrifice the time.
Lastly, the most important part in anything you do:
Pure Heart.
Three.
I remembered a moment in a happier time.
It was when I felt as if I could still breathe.
Now I felt as if I was stuck underwater.
I felt suffocated.
My heart was shattered into a million pieces.
Two.
The moment I would take my Olympic Block.
All that hard work would have finally paid off.
Then, I could have walked out on my own.
Now that would never happen due to the crash.
It only took one moment before my dreams went up in flames.
One.
I felt like quitting, and I was beaten.
Inspired by the people who believed in me I fought on.
I was determined to prove all of the doubters wrong.
I was glad I did because if not, I wouldn't be here today fulfilling my dreams.
I took one last big breath, and waited for the horn.
Defeating the odds: Now I could finally Breathe.
Zero
(Beep!) Go.
