Revali
"Link is your roommate?" I ask Revali and he lets out a loud sigh.
"We don't share a room, but we live in the same frat house."
"Link is a frat boy?" I really can't imagine Link being in a fraternity. He's so quiet and reserved. Aren't frat boys excessively social, meeting and talking to a bunch of people?
"Isn't there a party at your house tonight?" Impa says to Revali, making him glare at her.
"Of course there is, there's a party every weekend. It's always a full house, full of asinine people trying to meet Link. However, that self-centered jackass just happens to disappear every time we have people over, knowing damn well that I'm the one who has to deal with everyone asking about him."
"Why does he leave? And where does he go?"
"Do I look like his goddamn babysitter?" Revali snarls.
"Sorry I asked," I say and see Daruk coming from the kitchen with two hot plates in his hands. He places them in front of us with his smile brighter than the sun.
"Bon appétit," he says in a terrible French accent and we thank him.
Revali's already done with his food by the time we start ours and gets up to make his leave. His eyes are full of poison and he doesn't bother to say goodbye to us. I understand that it must be frustrating to have Link as a roommate with all these strangers coming over to try and meet him, but I can't help but think that there is another reason for Revali's bitterness. I wonder if something happened between the two.
When Revali reaches the exit, the door opens and Mipha steps inside, accidentally bumping into the six foot man. I'm really surprised to see her here; not many people know about Vah Rudania and it's not exactly close to the campus.
"Watch where you're going!" Revali hisses at Mipha but his scowl quickly turns into a warm expression when his eyes look down at her. I feel bad for Mipha, she doesn't deserve to be yelled at but I can't help my childish grin when I notice their amusing height difference; her head barely even reaches to his chest.
"My apologies," Mipha says shily and looks up at the ill-tempered guy towering over her.
"Oh... Um.. No," Revali stammers. He looks a bit lost as he stares at her big eyes. "It... It's fine."
I can hardly hear them, but as I am turning my head away from the door to continue eating, Mipha's eyes meet mine across the room and she sends me a soft smile along with a wave of the hand. I can tell she's just as surprised to see me as I am to see her. Mipha steers at the sushi bar to greet me and Impa, but Revali grabs her wrist and holds her captive near the door.
"Who are you?" He asks her in a totally different tone. Despite his very inappropriate grip, he sounds very gentle.
"Hm?" Mipha looks at her wrist and then back up at Revali. Maybe I should intervene.
"You're from HU," he states and points at her blue kitbag with the school's logo. "Are you a freshman?"
"I'm a Sophomore."
"Really? I've never seen you on campus, nor at any of our parties."
"I don't attend parties," Mipha tells him kindly and gives me a desperate look for help.
"I'll be right back," I say to Impa and get up to join Mipha and Revali by the exit.
"Yeah me neither," Revali says and shrugs as I reach them. His scowl returns when he sees me and he instantly lets go of Mipha.
"Hey Mipha, I'm glad you could make it." I pretend we had planned to meet here all along to get rid of Revali. Pointing at his former stool I say to her, "Why don't you join us at the bar, a seat has just opened up."
She gives me a thankful nod and wants to follow me but Revali stops us.
"Wait," he calls after me, "aren't you going to introduce us?"
I'm beyond confused. I don't even know this guy and now he wants me to introduce him to a girl I've barely talked to? Fine, if he really wants me to introduce him to Mipha, I shall oblige.
"Revali, meet Mipha, the captain of the swim team. Mipha, meet Revali, Hyrule University's greatest archer of all time." And that's literally, without exceptions, all I know about them.
I watch as his face turns pale and his hands run nervously through his dark waves of hair.
"There's no need for titles," he tries to be humble.
"Don't be so modest. Go on, tell her what you told me just a minute ago."
"Revali anticipates to become a world-famous champion," I say when it's clear that he won't. "But first he will break every school record. Isn't that right, Revali?"
"That is correct," he admits, aiming his nose up and his eyes down.
"That is quite the goal," Mipha says tenderly.
"I like to call it a target," Revali smiles with confidence and suddenly his hand is holding Mipha's. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mipha."
"The pleasure is mine," she says and I can't tell if she's just being friendly or if she actually likes this guy.
The door behind Revali swings open once more and my jaw drops as Link enters the restaurant. If I could, I'd hide, but he has already locked eyes with me. What is he doing here? Is there some school event going on I don't know about? For the past two years I've been to Vah Rudania every week, and never have I seen Revali, Mipha, or Link eat here. I feel like I missed something and start to think of the possible explanations as why they're all here today. Did impa know about this? No, she couldn't have. She didn't even know Revali until a few minutes ago.
I know better than to greet Link; he'd most likely ignore me anyways. I simply look away. It's too soon to face him after everything that happened during PE today and I can already feel the temperature rising in my cheeks.
Mipha must have noticed him too, for she jerks her hand away from Revali's touch and stifles a squeak. Her odd reaction makes Revali turn around as well and his eyes narrow.
"Link! You're here," Mipha peeps with a mixture of excitement and nervousness.
"Shouldn't you be at the house? Everyone's probably looking for you," Revali spits. "Is this where you hide out every Friday? How pathetic."
Link ignores Revali's disrespectful remarks and looks at each of us until his eyes ultimately settle on Mipha. Why do I have the odd feeling that it's not a coincidence that Mipha and Link came here at the same time? I wonder if she asked him out. If so, I hope it doesn't affect her grades. If they start dating, I'll feel a little uncomfortable during biology, and even more so if they break up. But I'm overthinking this, as usual. I should just be happy for her, she deserves to be with the one she admires.
"We're a little early to the reservation," Mipha tells Link with a lovely smile, confirming my suspicion. Revali's hands shape into fists as if tempted to use them. He must not be happy that Mipha has an interest in the boy he loathes.
I feel awkward standing in a group of half-strangers, especially with this tension thickening the air. Luckily, there is a good excuse for me to return to my seat next to Impa.
"My food is getting cold, I should probably head back to the sushi bar. Revali, it's been a pleasure," I say to him, then turn to Mipha, "Mipha, good to see you."
"You too," she says and I walk away without looking at or speaking to Link.
Once I reach Impa and take my seat it feels like I can finally breathe again.
"What's wrong?" Impa says with her mouth full of rice.
"That was super uncomfortable."
"Can't see why," she chuckles. "What's Link doing here?"
"I think he's going out with Mipha."
"Who?" she maffles and turns her head to stare impolitely.
"Impa! Don't be so obvious."
"She's pretty."
"And smart," I add. Impa casts a wicked smile. "What?"
"You're prettier," she says, "and smarter."
"No," and before she can say yes, I add, "It's not a competition."
"If you say so," Impa chirps. She's already finished with her food and orders a refill. "I've been meaning to ask... How did your dad react to your double-major idea? Is the curfew the only rule he made?"
"Not quite." I'm afraid to tell her about the requirements I have to meet. What if she tells me I can't do it? I barely believe in myself and if she agrees to the madness of Father's terms, I'll lose the strength to even try.
"Well?" Impa asks impatiently.
"I..." If she tells me that I'm making a mistake or should have stood up to Father I don't know what I'll do. I sigh. Here it goes... "I have to get an A in every class."
"You what?" she chokes on her food.
"Is that crazy?"
"No," she says in a serious tone. "It's brave."
"You really think so?"
"Listen to me, if this is your only way of achieving your dreams, you're going to give it your all. It'll take everything, and it'll be the hardest challenge yet, but if anyone can pull it off, it's you."
I feel a lot of weight lifted off my shoulders. Maybe it's not the challenge that scares me, but the people who will anticipate my failure. Impa is not one of them. When she says I can do this, no matter how crazy it may sound, I can't hear dishonesty in her voice. And she is right; it is brave of me... Probably the bravest thing I've ever done.
"The other rules are that I mustn't tell lies and that I cannot get distracted by...boys."
"Your dad actually said that?" she laughs loudly.
"Yes and trust me it was very awkward," I say and laugh too. "All thanks to your stupid photo of... him."
"I wish I could have been there to hear him say that! But, wow, no boys? That's gonna be a hard one. How are you going to hide your seven boyfriends from him? They don't all fit in your closet."
I laugh and roll my eyes. I finish my food and after some more small talk we ask for the check and get ready to leave. As I walk towards the restroom to wash my hands, I pass Mipha and Link's booth unnoticed by either.
"You've grown since I last saw you," I catch her say. It makes me stop behind the corner, out of sight. Did they know each other before college? I don't hear Link say something in return but something he's doing kindles Mipha's lovable giggle. "And yet you have not changed," she adds.
I find myself wanting to know more about their past, but my conscience is telling me to give them some privacy and my ego is telling me that I shouldn't care in the first place. I contain my curiosity and leave Vah Rudania with Impa before I can find out how and when they first met or how well they actually know each other.
