Mipha
"Yes?" I say, confused. "Do you know him?"
"Don't you?" she asks, amazed.
I think for a moment, but I am sure that I haven't met him before.
"I don't think so. How do you know him?"
"Everyone knows him! He's quite famous!" Impa sounds more excited than she was when she got her acceptance letter.
"He is?" I ask casually and continue to eat. I hope she tells me more about him without me having to ask questions. I don't want her to think I actually want to know more.
"I can't believe you got to sit next to Link and didn't even try to talk to him!"
"It's not like he wanted to talk to me either. He doesn't seem very social."
"He doesn't talk to anyone, but his games are incredible!"
"What sport does he play?" I ask, trying not to sound too curious.
"What sport doesn't he play? He plays a lot of different sports, that's what he's famous for. He's most known for his fencing career though; when he was still a child he could beat adults in duels!"
That's actually really impressive, but I act like I don't care about him, so Impa continues to praise him.
"Then he picked up Tennis and Snowboarding, he even got an offer for a full-ride baseball scholarship at another school, but he declined it to play soccer at HU. He's our new striker."
"You sure know a lot about him. Isn't it unhealthy to play this many sports?"
"For any normal person, yes, but Link is among the top 5 athletes in the country!"
"And among the top 5 smelliest," I add and Impa just smirks at me.
"You're so going to fall for him."
"Yeah right."
"Half the school is in love with him. Boys included."
"Perfect, they can have him all for themselves, because all I want is an empty seat next to me."
She finally drops the topic and makes fun of the theatre kids instead. One of them says 'Macbeth', causing the entire cast to gasp in shock and fear. It's a superstition that the name is cursed, leading to a chain of unfortunate events when said out loud. We both laugh quietly. The cake is very filling and I suddenly feel increasingly sleepy. Luckily, I only have one class left for today and it's by far my favorite; biology.
I enter the lab and wave at the girl sitting at my table. She smiles and waves back.
"Hey Zelda," she greets me as I sit down next to her.
"Hey Mipha, how are you today?"
"I can't complain, and you?"
"Doing good."
That is all we ever talk about, and I love it. We open our textbooks and wait for the class to start. I envy Mipha for her natural beauty. She is petite and soft-spoken and thinks that no one pays attention to her, but her burgundy ponytail and her hazel eyes make it nearly impossible not to see her. She may not notice it, but the guys in our class study her face and her body more than they study their books. I'm glad that it doesn't draw her attention and that she is fully focused on our project instead. Her smile is subtle but undying and I can't help but smile too.
Mipha usually dresses similarly to me, but today she is wearing leggings and a sports jacket in the colors of our school. Normally, I would keep my questions to myself, but I feel talkative today and ask her if she is an athlete at HU.
"I'm the captain of the swim team," she confirms and I raise my eyebrows.
"I had no idea." I probably should have complimented her, but I am too surprised that she is into sports. I thought she was more like me. She turns her head to give me a shy smile.
"Today is our first meet, that's why I'm wearing the team jacket."
"Oh, I see. Who are you going against?"
"Goron City College."
"Should be fairly easy, right? I heard GCC doesn't have the strongest teams."
"I suppose." Her smile widens, "If you'd like to watch you could..."
Mipha's lips freeze and her eyes look past me towards the door. I turn around to find what she is staring at. Or should I say who she is staring at. Link is standing by the door and scans the room before he enters and walks past us. What is he doing in my biology class? Mipha's eyes follow him all the way to the table he chooses to sit at. Of course it's the one right behind us.
Curious whispers travel through the room as more students gape at Link as if he were a Middlemist Red, the rarest flower in the world. Then again, I think I'm the only person who would gape at such rare beauty.
How am I supposed to concentrate if everyone is chattering about Link all the time? To be fair, the professor isn't here yet, so my annoyance over their noise is not yet justifiable. At least he has showered and changed his clothes. He's no longer wearing his sweaty jersey, but a blue t-shirt with HU's logo across its chest.
For the first time I can take a good look at his face and immediately drown in the blue of his eyes. Even the ocean couldn't compete against those heavenly colors. Suddenly his eyes meet mine and I turn around as quickly as I can. Did I just stare at him? He definitely noticed that! I can feel the embarrassment heating my flushed cheeks and hide my face in the pages of my book.
"Zelda, are you alright?" Mipha asks and pats my back. I look up at her and nod.
"I'm fine," I assure her. She's pre-med, so she constantly worries about people's health. I just hope she didn't witness my awkward stare. "Really, I'm okay. I just wanted to revise this chapter before class begins." I point at the page of my book and realize that I am holding it upside down.
"Okay," she says and is glad to return her attention to Link. In a shy whisper, she asks me, "Did you know he was going to be in our class?"
"No, I'm as shocked as you," I say and roll my eyes, which she can't see since she is still hypnotized by Link.
"Why did I have to wear this today?" she groans, embarrassed. "I look like a walking pile of laundry. He mustn't think I dress like this every day."
"You look great," I say and force an awkward smile. Why does she suddenly care about her looks?
It's not like he dresses any better anyways. They both wear school merch and gym clothes. In a way I envy their freedom of clothes. I always want to make a good impression and try to dress in a cute yet elegant fashion every day. Never would I wear the school's merch, mainly because I don't need to wear my own name across my chest. It's bad enough that half the school has their eyes attached to me at all times, prying and waiting for me to make a mistake.
The class starts and I have to nudge Mipha in order to snap her out of her daydreams. She turns to face the whiteboard in front of us, her face has gained the same color as her hair. So he can turn even the sweetest girl into a drooling zombie. If this is how my biology classes will be from now on I will most certainly lose my patience. This is the class I enjoy the most, the one in which I will ace every test, and I won't let this boy ruin it for me.
The professor explains how the human heart works and I try to take notes, but the muttered voices of my overly chatty classmates keep impeding my concentration.
"I heard he won gold five times in a row," I hear one of the guys whisper to his friend.
"I only came to HU because of him," a girl replies.
The tip of my pencil breaks from the pressure I put on my papers as I hear another one say, "He's so hot."
Am I the only sane person in the room? I get that he's a good-looking athlete, it's not like I've never looked at a guy before and considered him handsome, but choosing a school based on one person is preposterous. I want to turn around and see Link's reaction to the growing disturbance he is causing within these classroom walls, but I would rather get a C on an exam than give him the attention of a mindless, spellbound fangirl. My thoughts shall be dedicated to my project, still, my focus keeps wandering off, away from my paper and into the corner of my eyes, but without turning my head, I can't see Link. Why am I even trying to look at him?
I didn't realize it before, but the room is suddenly silent and I take a look around to see why everyone, including the professor, stopped talking. Everyone is staring at me and my heart sinks to my stomach.
