I Miss You
After biology I make my way to the dormitories to find Impa. I haven't been here before and don't know if she'll even be in her room but I have to try. I don't like how we left things.
The door to the building is locked and only students who live here can access it with a card. I wait outside for a few minutes, hoping that another student will show up and let me in, but I'm too impatient and text Impa instead.
*Can we please talk?* I press send and receive a text message at the same exact time.
*I'm sorry about earlier, can we talk?* Her message reads.
I'm so happy she's willing to make up. We get into fights every once in a while but usually it's over stupid stuff. Today was different. I think I understand why she's upset, but there might be more to it.
*Where are you?* I ask just as a guy pushes the door open and steps outside.
I rush inside before the door falls shut again and look at the floor plans next to the staircase. There are no names, just room numbers, and I, being the good friend I am, don't have a clue what Impa's room number is.
I walk down the hall of the second floor. Loud music booms from one of the rooms at the end of the hallway and it smells really bad in here. One of the doors opens and a tan guy with dark hair and bright blue eyes steps out. He's wearing swim shorts, a tank top, and a necklace with seashells.
"C'mon, hurry up man," he says to someone in the room before he spots me.
"Bro, give me a second, I can't find my keys," another male voice complains. "Never mind, found 'em."
"Yo," the blue eyed boy says to me as his friend joins us with towels and car keys in his hand.
"Hi," I say confused. Am I in the wrong building?
"You look lost," the second guy notes.
"I... er... Is this not the girls dormitory?" I ask the first guy.
"Nah, that's the building to the left of this one," he tells me.
"Oh."
"C'mon, we'll show ya," the guy with the towels offers.
"Oh, no, that's alright," I wave my hands.
"We're heading that way anyway," the one with the blue eyes says and walks ahead.
Since I don't have much of a choice, I follow them out of the building.
"I'm Fin," the second guy says with a smile. He's pretty tan as well with brown hair and brown eyes.
"I'm Zelda," I say, expecting him to recognize my name but he doesn't. His roommate does though.
"Wait, your name is Zelda? As in Hyrule?"
I nod.
"Dope, I'm Armes," is all he says.
My phone vibrates and I look at the notification. It's Impa.
*Leaving the pier right now. Be on campus in 10. Meet me at Loftwing.*
Loftwing was the name of Hyrule's first mascot. The eagle statue that Impa and I sat by last week now honors that name. Thankfully a spot I actually know how to find.
*Ok.*
"This is it," Fin says, pointing at a building identical to the men's dormitory.
"Thanks for showing me. I actually have to get back to campus now."
"Wow, you totally wasted our time," Fin shakes his head.
"I'm sorry," I say, feeling guilty.
"I'm just teasing! Lighten up," He laughs.
"Do you need a ride to campus?" Armes asks me.
"No, I drove here myself, but thanks," I smile.
"Alright, let's hurry, Armes, the drive is a pain during rush hour and Russ is already waiting at the beach," Fin says to his friend.
"Not my fault we're late," Armes retorts.
I drive back to campus to meet Impa at the eagle statue near the stadium. I have about an hour left before my astronomy course. More like 45 min. I want to make sure I'm early for that class. While I wait on the bench I pull up my phone and go to the school's website to read the Hyrule Daily News. The front page of Hyrule University is advertising today's soccer game. The eagles are going against the sharks. I scroll down the schedule and find Lorule near the end of the season.
"Hey," Impa startles me. She doesn't look angry but she also doesn't hold the usual excited expression I've grown so accustomed to.
She takes a seat next to me and hands me a postcard she bought at the pier. I know what this is and let out a sigh of relief. Back in 6th grade, Impa and I got into a fight at the pier and seperated to blow off steam. I quickly realized that the pier was no fun without Impa. Even though she was only a couple feet away, it felt like thousands of miles were separating us. I saw the souvenir shop and bought a postcard, pretending that I was on vacation without Impa. Because when you're on vacation you miss the person you love the most. I wrote to her about how much I missed her and how nothing was fun when she wasn't with me.
Impa forgave me when I showed her the postcard and over the years it became somewhat of a tradition, a rule even, to write an apology postcard after a big fight. This is her apology letter. I turn the card around and start to read it.
"Dear Zelda,
I just watched a kid drop his ice cream and it made me laugh. I was waiting for you to yell at me for laughing but you weren't here. I realized that in a way I'm that kid and you're the ice cream. I dropped you and now I feel like crying like a baby. I miss you. California sucks without you. I'm sorry for yelling at you. You can kiss whoever you want and if you need me, I'll be there. Even if I have to fly around the world to meet you, I'll be there. I mean it. Can't wait to come home.
Love you, always.
Xx Impa
"I'm sorry," I hug her and slide the card into my planner to protect it from kinking.
"Forgive me?" She asks nervously.
"I don't know, that ice cream metaphor was really weird," I laugh and she relaxes in my arms.
"You suck," she shoves me lightly.
"I'm sorry for not calling you," I apologize. I should have talked to her sooner, I realize that now.
"It's fine."
"No, you're my best friend and I don't want you to feel left out."
"I don't. I just thought... Well... To be honest, I thought that maybe... maybe... Never mind. I'm just glad we're good."
"I wanted to come after you earlier but I had to get to class."
"I know. It was better that way. I wouldn't have listened to you anyways. I needed to leave... to write a postcard. Whenever I have to imagine being far away from you I instantly want to make up with you. No matter how bad the fight."
"Me too."
We have never been apart for a long time. Even when I go on ski vacation she comes along. I'm glad Father approves of her. That's mainly because her parents have been close to him for decades. I bet if he were to meet her for the first time again, he wouldn't approve of our friendship.
"So... How are things with Link now?" Impa asks me.
"I'm not sure. He's been ignoring me for two days straight, but it's kind of normal for him to ignore people. Especially on game days."
"Not when you've kissed someone."
"Well, I did tell him that the kiss was a mistake, so maybe he's acting like it never happened in the first place. Oh, but then today during our English lecture he put his hand on mine."
"During class? Be careful, Zelda. What if someone sees you? People will talk if they see Link holding hands with someone, especially if that someone is the president's daughter."
"I should rephrase that... His pinky touched mine. No one saw it and I pulled my hand back when he did it."
"Hm... I don't know. I thought Link was cool and all, but now I'm not so sure... I know you're interested in him and probably don't want to hear this, but you should probably stay away from him."
"First of all, I'm not interested in him--"
"Oh please," she rolls her eyes. "Just stop."
"What..?"
"You are clearly interested in him. You keep talking about him. Ever since you met him for the first time you haven't stopped obsessing over him. It's not healthy. As far as I can tell, he's only making you miserable. You always complain about him, even when he's being nice."
"Not anymore. I want to make things right."
"How can you say this? The only thing standing in the way of this is you. You're self-sabotaging."
"The only sabotaging factor is my father," I argue.
"Even if the rules didn't exist and your dad was out of the picture, Link would still be a bad idea. He's a cheater."
"He's not a cheater. I was wrong about him and Mipha dating."
Impa pauses, clearly running out of arguments.
"But still. He kissed you and now he won't even talk to you."
"I kissed him..." I defend Link.
"Doesn't matter who kissed who. If he won't talk to you then he doesn't deserve you anyways."
Is it true that he doesn't talk to me or am I in fact one of the rare people he actually does talk to?
"What if he's just being quiet because of his game? Urbosa said he doesn't speak to anyone on game days..." Then I would have no reason to be upset with him.
"Are you done with classes for today?" Impa asks out of the blue.
"No, I have astronomy in a bit."
"Okay. I'll make you a suggestion. After astronomy you'll meet me at the stadium, I'll save you a seat. When the game is over you'll go talk to Link and if he's still not talking you know that it's not due to soccer."
"You'd do that for me?"
"I'd go to war for you," she says seriously.
"So you'll give Link a chance?"
"I don't have a problem with Link. I just don't think he's boyfriend material. But if this whole thing is really bothering you, then I want to help you out in any way I can."
"I'm not looking for a boyfriend," I tell her.
"I know. But sometimes we find things we weren't searching for. Just... Be careful, okay? If he breaks your heart I'll have to break his legs."
"I love you," I smile.
"Love you more," she claims.
"But wait... What if he does finally talk to me?"
"Well wouldn't that be a good thing?" She asks.
"Yes, but what am I supposed to say?"
"Hey sexy, nice ass," she jokes and winks.
I swat her arm and we both laugh. It's a funny thought but I could never say that to somebody, not even as a joke. If I were to say that to Link he'd surely give me a strange look. My smile falters when I think about confronting Link...
"I don't know about all this... I don't want to look like I'm obsessed with Link. I just want to make sure I didn't do anything to upset him."
"There you go. Say just that. If he's half the decent man you say he is, he'll talk to you."
"And if he doesn't?" I ask, nausea twisting my stomach into knots.
"Then he doesn't. Then he's a dick and you don't have to waste your time worrying about him anymore." Impa sighs when she notices my worried expression. "I know you're nervous because he was your first kiss and all, but you're not proposing to him. Your goal is to be on good terms with him, right?"
"Yes. I don't want to date him but I also don't want to fight him. I just want us to be..." I'm not sure what I want us to be exactly.
"Friends," Impa finishes my sentence.
"I suppose."
I can't imagine Link having a friendship like Impa and I. He's friends with Mipha but doesn't even say hi to her in class. I don't know what I'm expecting from him. Maybe this is as close as you can get to him and I should appreciate what we had. What we have, I mean. I want to be sure that we're good, that's it. He's done so much for me and endured my bad temper, so I owe it to him and to myself to make things right.
"Okay," I finally say. "I'll meet you at the stadium after astronomy. Just text me the seat numbers and I'll come right after class."
