Daruk

Biology, political science, astronomy, and German are only a few of the classes I have to excel in, and yet the course I'm most worried about is PE. What a joke.

As I'm driving home I think about Link's body lying on top of mine and I can feel my heart exhilarate. I've never been that close to anyone. I was so panicked that I don't quite remember how everything played out. I fell and the next thing I know is that his hands were on my hips and his face was only two inches away from mine. If I could turn back time I would have never offered my help to the coach. That was possibly the most humiliating day of my life.

When I park in our driveway I see that Father's car is missing. I'd be surprised if it weren't; Father always gets home late at night, I usually eat dinner by myself. Despite my growing appetite I head straight upstairs to take a shower. I feel more exhausted than I have in a while and I don't know if it's due to physical ed or the stress of changing my major and having to deal with a girl trying to break my face for an hour straight.

After my shower I walk back to my room and open the door to my closet. I did consider driving back to school to study in the library, but I am too exhausted and might just do that on the weekend instead. Tonight I want to stay in, wear my most comfortable outfit, eat snacks and read a book.

While I'm imagining the perfect night, I don't notice the door to my room opening behind me. I hear a flirty whistling and nearly drop my towel as I recoil in horror. My heart nearly jumps out of my chest when I turn hastily towards the door. A tall girl with long white hair and a smug expression is leaning against the door frame.

"Impa!" I yell and throw the nearest piece of clothing at her. "You scared me half to death!"

My heart is still racing and my rapid breath only feeds the smirk on Impa's face. I'd ask her how she got into the house, but I already know that she let herself in. She does that sometimes when Father isn't home.

"You know we have a doorbell, right?" I scold her.

"So?"

"Visitors use it to let the owners of the house know that they'd like to enter," I say as if talking to a toddler.

"So?" Impa says again and throws herself on my bed. "I'm not a visitor."

"What are you then?"

"A ninja," she smiles and I roll my eyes at her.

"What brings you to my home, oh mighty warrior?"

"A mission. An important mission to take you out, Princess."

"Take me out?" I pretend to be scared. "Make it quick and painless," I plead.

"Take you out for dinner," she clarifies and laughs.

"That's what you came here for? Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm not going anywhere tonight. I'm planning to just lie in bed and read until I fall asleep."

Impa has her eyes closed and makes a snoring sound. I throw another shirt at her but she catches it swiftly. She jumps up from the bed and grabs my wrists in excitement.

"We haven't been to Daruk's since graduation! We used to go every Friday, let's bring that back!"

"I promised Father that I'd get an A in every course, I can't allow myself to get distracted."

She looks at me with a blank expression and then her confident smile unfolds from ear to ear.

"Get dressed and meet me downstairs. I'll start the car," she tells me and turns on her heels.

"Impa," I call after her but she ignores my dissent. She won't take no for an answer.

Fifteen minutes later I'm walking down the stairs carrying a mini backpack with my wallet, phone, keys, and some homework inside. I can't believe she always gets me to do things I normally wouldn't do. I really should stay home and catch up on my new classes.

"Took you long enough," she yawns with a grin.

"Come on then," I stress, "the sooner we go, the sooner I'll be back."

"What's the rush?"

"I have a new curfew. I have to be back by 8 PM."

"So 10?"

I'd like to lie at her smug face but she just knows me far too well. "Yes, 10. But can we please be back by 8 anyways?"

My hair is still a little damp but with my dutch braids it's barely noticeable. Impa's radio is blasting as we're driving down the hill. We should have taken my car so that I could go home whenever I feel like leaving. Throughout the entire car ride I worry about my stack of homework that I have yet to finish over the weekend. I already get worried when I'm not ahead in my classes, but being behind is a whole new level of anxiety.

The drive is a bit longer than forty minutes, mainly because of the traffic within the city.

"Remember this place?" She asks as the car comes to a halt.

"The restaurant we used to go to every Friday for years up until three months ago? Yes, I think I remember it."

"Okay that's it," she pulls the keys out of the ignition and snaps her head in my direction. "If you think you can allow yourself to be sarcastic then you're absolutely right." She can't hold a serious expression. "Right now you're 78% boring and 53% stressed out. And we're gonna change that tonight!"

I raise one eyebrow. "Change it to what? 131% confused?"

"200% fun!" she laughs and I join.

I climb out of the passenger seat and follow her inside Vah Rudania, our all-time favorite Japanese restaurant downtown. The delicious aromas of sukiyaki and hearty wheat noodles permeate the small entrance space and fill my nose unhampered. Oh, how I've missed these smells.

It's always pretty crowded on Friday nights but we are lucky to find a few empty seats at the sushi bar. As soon as we are seated we hear a hearty laugh and the itamae Daruk, a large man with an even larger smile, heads straight towards us from behind the counter.

"Impa! Zelda!" He calls merrily. "Haven't seen ya in forever!"

"Hey Daruk," we say in synchrony.

"How's college? I heard you're at HU now! That's a pretty big deal!"

I smile shyly while Impa goes all out.

"The campus is huge!" She tells him. "It takes me half an hour to get from one class to the next! I love living in the dorms, I've met like a thousand new people in two weeks and the martial arts program is incredible! I think I'll qualify for international competitions this year!"

"I have no doubt you will," Daruk says to Impa and infects us with his wide grin as he places two drinks in front of us. He still remembers our favorite drinks; Gabunomi melon soda for me and coconut Ramune for Impa.

"On the house," he says and we thank him with unbreakable smiles. "You guys hungry?"

"Starving," we tell him and he grabs two menus for us.

I was going to work on homework as we're waiting for our orders, but Impa and I haven't talked much since college started and it's actually nice to catch up and just forget about school for one evening. Every once in a while I get this awful feeling that I'm risking my entire career for this fun night, but Impa continuously gets my mind off of school.

"This was a great idea," I admit to her and she nods with a shrug and a smirk.

"I know."

We sip on our beverages and Impa tells me all about her plans for the weekend. She was invited to a frat party tonight, and although she would have loved to go, she much rather wanted to spend some time with me alone. I know Impa can take care of herself, but I wish she would take it slow with the parties. I worry about her grades, even though she doesn't even care about college and no one is forcing her to go or pressuring her with unrealistic expectations.

"So," she throws me a very curious look, "You and Link?"

"Not you too! Do you even know what trouble that picture caused? Father thought I was dating Link!" I immediately feel the heat in my cheeks and turn my head away.

"How did your Father see the picture?"

"He had my phone when you sent it. That caption didn't help by the way."

"Wait, what? I never sent you that.... Ohh, you're talking about that picture."

"Well which one are you talking about?"

"I saw a photo of the two of you sucking face today."

"What! No! That's not... We..." I am too embarrassed to form a sentence. What photo did she see? Did Malice post that hideous picture of us on the floor?

"Calm down," she tells me and takes a slow sip before explaining herself. "A girl that's doing MMA with me showed it to me."

"Malice!" I cuss. "I'm so cursed! If Father sees that picture he'll think I have a... I will have to drop biology! What am I going to do? Impa why are you smiling? This isn't funny!""

"Would you stop worrying so much?" She's so calm, it's making me upset. "I told her to delete it."

"You did?" I ask, thankful. "So she deleted it?"

"No, but she did challenge me to beat her in a fight. She said if I win, she'll delete the photo."

"Oh no, did you fight her?"

"For you I'd fight anyone, anytime."

"And... Did... Did you win?"

Impa swats my arm. "Is that even a question? Of course I won!"

I'm so relieved that the photo no longer exists, but then I realize that Malice does martial arts and could break my face even without a volleyball.

"Link and I... We didn't..." I can't even use the words Impa used.

"Suck face?" Impa chuckles.

"Shut up," I whisper and take a swift look around. No one is paying attention to us, yet I feel all eyes on me. I don't want anyone to know what happened in PE today.

"So what happened?" Impa asks, knowing that I don't want to talk about it. "Come on, we tell each other everything. Just spill it."

"Nothing happened," I answer honestly. "I tried to grab the volleyball net from the back but it was dark and the net was stuck. When I pulled harder..." Impa is about to burst into laughter and I realize I should probably phrase it differently. "When I got the net off of its hooks I fell backward and Link fell on top of me. The net had us all tangled up and we needed help getting up. That's all that happened."

I chew on my straw, annoyed that this happened to me today.

"And..." Impa clearly has a lot to say but she's trying to be considerate. "Did you like it?"

"Impa! No!"

"Liar," she smirks.

"It was humiliating. The coach found us like that. And that's not even the worst part. Well I guess it's still the reason for the worst part; the other girls from my PE class!"

"Jealousy is kicking in early," she teases and I almost shove her off the stool.

"I'm not jealous, but Malice made some dumb remark that I'm Link's crazy stalker. I'd have to be a mental case to care about that guy. Only a diluted lunatic would fall for Link! He is nothing but an overrated, inconsiderate--"

"Pathetic jock," someone finishes my sentence.

Impa and I both look to our left. The voice belongs to a guy, not much older than us, eating his sushi all alone.

"Are you from HU too?" I ask him and his green eyes narrow as he looks up from his plate.

"Yes. I'm Hyrule University's greatest archer of all time. Revali," his chin shoots up, "Remember my name. With my set of skills and precision I am going to break every school record and soon I'll be globally recognized as the prime champion."

"You're an athlete. That kinda makes you a jock too, you know?" Impa states. I love that she completely disregarded Revali's boastful pomposity.

"Pfft," he puffs, "I am a professional. I shoot my targets with a passion none of you could possibly comprehend. That boy you were speaking of is just a musclebrain whose sole reason for playing soccer is that he knows how to score points."

"His name is Link," I say harshly. I may not like Link, but the way Revali talks bad about him heats my throat with rage.

"I know his name!" He snaps at me. "I'm his unfortunate roommate!"
