Setbacks

I won't lie; trekking up a cold path In untameable heavy rain, accompanied by an annoying blonde was a pain in the butt. Link's extroverted personality mixed terribly with my introverted 'leave me the heck alone' attitude.

I just wanted Ganon to be banished already, so I could go back to my boring, non important, non world saving life. I'm not made for this heroine stuff.

Well - I am... It was what I was born for-- but... Ya know what, nevermind...

As we walked, I hadn't noticed I had spaced out, and the only reason I snapped out of it was due to Link's horrendously annoying method of getting my attention.

"Y/N. Y/N. Y/N. Y/N. Y/N. Y/N. Y/N." He inhaled "Y/NNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!"

Oh for the love of— "WHAT?!" I screeched, spinning around to scowl at the teenager. He seemed unaffected, and placed a hand on his belt.

"Are you hungry?"

My eyebrows crinkled in confusion at the question "...Why?"

"Well, it's getting pretty late." He pointed out, gesturing to the darkening sky behind clouds "And we haven't really eaten anything besides apples and that one meal on the Great Plateau. Plus... your stomach's been growling for the past fifteen minutes."

"What?" I glanced at my stomach, and then back at him "It has no—"

Grrrrrrrrwlllllll

My eyes widened, a huge wave of weakness taking over as my stomach began whining Feed me! Feed me! Like that plant from Little shop of Horrors.

"We're ignoring that." I deadpanned.

"No we're not." Link retorted and took ahold of my arm, leading me across the path and behind a rather large rock. On the other side was a group of reptile creatures dancing around a cooking pot. These creatures, from Link's Hyrule Compendium, were known as Lizalfos. They didn't seem so bad when I was running them over with Epona, but up close...

Yeah... Nope

"What the hell are you planning?" I hissed to Link. He didn't answer, and instead continued to type away on his Shiekah Slate. After a moment, he held out his hand and a glowing bomb materialised. I jumped back and protested with a whispered yell "What the—!"

"I didn't just get Spirit orbs at those shrines." He replied with a smirk, before yeeting the bomb over the rock right towards the Lizalfo camp. They approached it in confusion, which gave Link the opportunity to detonate. A round of startled and pained cries mixed with the explosion, weapons and scaly bodies flying everywhere while Link chuckled sadistically. But he wasn't done. Oh no, as if he hadn't surprised me enough already, a line of energy shot out from the slate and took ahold of a large metal box.

What the actual hell...?

With a swift turn, the box shot through the recovering Lizalfos and sweeping three of them away. The impact was enough to kill, which only left two monsters who clutched their weapons wearily.

"Okay, enough playing." Link sighed and unsheathed his sword, addressing me without really looking at me "Stay here, I'll deal with the rest of them old school."

And that he did. He jumped over the rock and plunged his blade into the ground, sending a wave that finished the weakened enemies off as quickly as Thanos's snap. Link whistled and twirled his sword around before putting it away, turning towards me with a smirk.

I think he's getting a little cocky with fighting...

"Okay, two questions." I declared, holding up two fingers "One, when were you planning on telling me about those strange abilities of yours. And two, why the hell didn't you do that with the guardian?"

"I assume by abilities you mean the runes," Link said while rolling his shoulders back, sighing in satisfaction when hearing a pop "Honestly there was no good time to bring it up, I was just planning on revealing them when the times were right. And as for the guardian... well, Magnesis only picks up metal objects, and the bombs would've been too hard to use without the explosion catching us too. In other words, we would've screwed ourselves instead of the robot."

He walked past me towards the camp, while I thought about his answer. After a moment I shrugged to myself and joined him "Okay, last question. Did you fight monsters, just for the cooking pot?"

"Pretty much." He shrugged, throwing some ingredients he had picked up into the fire and patting the spot next to him "C'mon, sit. We've walked enough today."

I crossed my arms "I don't think we have time to re— hey!"

Link pulled me down to sit next to him "How can we be heroes if we have no energy?"

"Well, we—"

A skewer, made of different meats and vegetables was shoved into my face "You've been so uptight ever since you found out about your... situation. You have to ease up a little, or you might lose yourself along the way."

My eyes widened slightly. Since when was Link the type of person to give me advice? I scoffed and snatched the skewer from his hand "Don't you think I know that? I'm just focusing on what's important."

Link sighed and began digging into his food "If you say so. Anyways I hope you enjoy the food, I haven't cooked in 100 years but I seem to still have a knack for it."

"Guess we'll see." I muttered staring at the skewer, not having high hopes for it as I took a bite. My eyes widened as sensational flavours filled my mouth, the meat complimented the vegetables perfectly. And the herbs added to give an extra mouth watering yum to it.

Holy crap... I think my mouth just had an orgasm!

"So?" Link asked eagerly "How is it?"

I flinched and gulped down the food, turning away from him to hide my obvious satisfaction "It's edible. It doesn't taste like buttcheek on a stick, so that's an accomplishment."

"Errr, Thanks?"

"So yeah, ummm..." I took another bite, masking the delight of my tastebuds "It ain't Nutella, but... it'll do."

Link studied the side of my face for a moment, eyes obviously narrowed in suspicion. It was getting kinda awkward, too, and I was about to comment on it. But before I could Link leaned forward and pounded his chest, letting out a round of hideous loud coughs. Out of instinct I patted his back until he regained his composure.

"Sorry, ahem... I inhaled some of the meat... instead of swallowing..." He croaked, rubbing his likely sore throat. I sighed and massaged my temple.

"You dumb, legendary sword wielding, hundred year old twit."

It wasn't long after we finished our meals when we decided to call it a night. Luckily we had shelter from the rain and n a fire to keep us warm, so sleep met us without too much difficulty. I'll be honest; I wasn't used to sleeping like this. Sure I've been camping before, but this had no tent, or sleeping bags. This was sleeping outside on a cold hard ground, using my folded cloak as a pillow, with nothing to protect us from the chilling damp air. Though to be honest, I kinda liked it. Sure it wasn't a five star hotel with plush bed sheets and free soap, but it was nice to find comfort in uncomfortable situations...

But yeah, anyway, sleep.

As I found myself falling deeper into a dreamless dreamland, I felt someone shaking my arm to bring me back into consciousness.

"Y/N! Hey, Y/N!" Link's panicked voice reached my ears as I cracked a tired eye open to see his face hovering over me.

I groaned and placed an arm over my eyes "What do you want... I'm trying to sleep!"

"Y-You gotta look at this!" The boy urged, his hands grasping my arms to pull me into a sitting position, despite my head still hanging "It's the moon!"

"What about it?"

"It's red!"

My eyes opened slightly in confusion, and I made my way over to the edge of the hide we were sleeping in. As I looked up, I noticed that the moon was indeed red. I let out a small yawn "Oh, that's just a blood moon..."

"W-What?"

"A blood moon. You know, a total lunar eclipse? It's when the earth passes between the moon and the sun, blocking the light from reaching the moon allowing its shadow falls across it. That's what gives it that red colour. They happen in my world all the time." I explained and once again looked up at it "But I don't think I've ever seen it that red before... Eh, it's probably nothing. Come on, let's go back to—"

I was cut off when a strange chilling feeling ran through my spine, which was followed by a sort of headache which made me nauseous for a short amount of time. I brushed it off as fatigue, but then multiple strange particles drifting along with the strangely strong wind. I winced when it brushed against my skin, leaving multiple stinging spots that had me holding my arms in discomfort "What the... this... isn't normal."

Link's head snapped towards me for a moment, but focused on the sky again when it painted itself in a deep crimson. The Clouds began moving as if they were in fast forward, and a strange ringing sound was heard around us "W-What about that?"

"Definitely not... none of this is normal!" I began to panic, my eyes going wide from the horror that seemed so harmless a few moments ago. I gasped when a loud roar reached my ears, and I covered them with a pained whimper. What was happening? Why was it happening?

"Y/N!" Link yelled when he saw me stumble back and caught me in his embrace, pulling me close to him, his arms coming around me protectively as we watched the sky becoming more chaotic by the second. I felt his hands grip the back of my shirt in fear when the land fully painted over in red.

"Be on your guard." Said the gentle voice of Zelda, but it held no such comfort in the current situation. "Ganon's power grows... it rises to its peak under the hour of the blood moon."

The ground began to shake, the darkness I felt grew around us as Link tightened his hold. He was shaking... we both were shaking.

"By it's glow, the aimless spirits of monsters slain in the name of the light return to flesh." The princess explained worriedly "Link... Y/N... please be careful."

Her voice disappeared, but the blood moon did not. My hands removed themselves from my ears, allowing my arms to wrap around Link to return his protective hug. My head was hidden his chest, but he didn't seem to mind. And... when the moon returned to normal... when the malice was blown away... the two of us only stood in silence.

"Link?" I placed my hands on his chest "You... can let go now."

Link gasped and pulled away "Sorry, was I squeezing too tight?"

"No, I just don't like human contact," I muttered, looking away from him "And we can't just jump into each other's arms when something scary happens."

"You just admitted you were scared."

I scowled "You're one to talk, Blonde Maraca! You were shaking like a mother trucking leaf!"

Link blinked, his lips pursing together in confusion at my insult. Nothing more was said on the matter, and the two of us stiffly made our way to sit next to the fire once more. Occasionally we would glance around, anxious in case any dead monsters would materialise close to us. I hugged my knees and stared out at the rain.

I cleared my throat "Now, err... the blood moon... it brings monsters back to life..."

"Yeah."

"Do Guardians fit that category?"

"I don't know..."

.

.

.

"Never go around that area again?"

I nodded eagerly.

The next day was nothing special; just more travelling through the path and fighting monsters. Did we get lost a few times? Maybe. But Link's map helped a lot in situations like that, especially since it showed our location.

As we walked my eyes traveled the area until they landed on a particular tree. It was large and overgrown, and it's roots had bursted through the ground and spread across the path. And in the trunk, was a large hole that looked to be made there a long time ago.

"I wonder what kind of tool was used to make that." I muttered to myself, but Link heard. He followed my gaze and too began staring at the tree. But his gaze seemed more... nostalgic. However, after a moment he gasped, and his eyes clouded over. The same thing he did back at the lab

"Link? Link!" I shook his shoulder "God Dammit, not again..."

—-

Link jumped back, his sword tightly held in his hand as he panted. His cerulean eyes were fixed on the person in front of him; a girl with a blue hood that kept her face hidden the whole time Link had known her. Not once had she taken it down. The only thing he could see was a pair of lips that remained in a deadpan, and a scar on her cheek that continued up past what was hidden. The girl stood, her spear in hand as she spoke to him.

"You're too cocky, Link. You can't expect to win this war with skill alone."

Link's jaw tightened. What did she know? Had she been training for knighthood since she could walk? Probably not. She hadn't even gotten a single hit on him yet. That said... he hadn't landed one on her either.

It was the same cycle. He would attack, she would dodge. She'd attack back, and he would block.

Was this training? Or tag?

"You know, maybe I would be more willing to take you seriously if I saw your face." Link suggested simply, which had the girl scoffing.

"You don't judge an enemy on their appearance," she took her stance "You judge them on their skill and likelihood of ending your life!"

She shot forward and Link wasn't prepared to block this time. Her spear was surrounded with a sacred red light, ready to pierce him at any time. Letting out a yelp, Link rolled out of the way and felt her fly past him. He heard her collide with something, but he wasn't sure what.

"Crap..."

The curse had him turning around to see the head of her spear wedged inside a nearby tree. She was pulling at it, noises of distress were heard through her clenched teeth as she tugged at her weapon. Link was almost amused at the sight.

"Need some help?"

"I'm fine, thank you."

She really wasn't.

Link rolled his eyes and made his way to her, before gripping her spear and helping her tug it out of the tree's trunk. It took a couple of attempts, and Link was surprised she didn't protest despite denying needing help, but they eventually stumbled back when the weapon became unwedged. Link panted and turned to the girl, an obnoxious smirk on his face.

"So what was that about not needing he—ACK!"

Link winced when his legs were flung into the air, which resulted it in him slamming back first into the ground below. His eyes squinted open, only to find a weapon pointed at him. He gulped and made eye contact with the wielder, who clicked her tongue in disappointment.

"I guess Hyrule is doomed," she said "You're cocky behaviour will get you killed. How do you expect to protect the princess and seal Ganon if you're a spirit?"

The hero frowned. Who did she think she was?

"What do you care if Hyrule survives or not?" Link spat, which had the girl tense for a moment.

"I care just as much as the rest of you champions."

"Right, sure." The blonde's gaze hardened as he he placed two fingers to the smooth part of her spear, pushing it away from him "And how did you become a champion in the first place, huh? Not like Mipha, or Daruk, or me or any of the other champions. You weren't sought out for your exceptional skill. The weapon you hold was obtained through villainous deeds. You stole it, and if it weren't for it choosing you right in front of everyone, you'd be behind bars."

Her jaw clenched, her weapon began to shake in her trembling hands as she struggled to keep her stance. After a moment, she let out a 'tch' and the spear was removed from between his eyes.

"You all don't trust me."

"For a good reason."

She put her weapon away "But luckily for you that doesn't matter. I'm not here to win your respect, I'm here to win a war. Trusted or not, I'll do whatever I can to make sure this darkness is sealed. And you better do the same, hero."

And with that the girl began to walk off. Link watched with a glare; despite only knowing her a few days he did not like her. None of the champions did.

The final key to Ganon's defeat. The spear of the three goddesses chose a former rotten thief on the run from the royal guard, to save the world alongside the champions. A criminal that snuck into the castle to steal an irreplaceable weapon, only to gain immunity when it was found out she was the legendary heroine.

"Heroine." Link scoffed "Heroine my ass."

—-

After a few minutes, Link's eyes snapped open and darted around in distress. He was breathing heavily, and there was sweat forming on his forehead.

"Wow," I spoke up after a while, causing him to quickly turn to me "That was a lot longer than last time, and it affected you more, too."

Link's gaze lowered.

"What did you see?" I finally asked, which caused him to flinch

His eyes met mine for a moment "I don't know what to make of it. I was with a hooded girl, and we were fighting. And then I started blabbering about her being a good for nothing crook."

"Rude."

"But the thing is, she had this weird spear. It was glowing blue at the start, but then it changed to red... And also, she was wearing your cloak."

Now that gained my interest. My head tilted to the side in confusion "Strange spear... champion garment... you think maybe you might be remembering me— well, past me?"

Link frowned and looked away again "I doubt it, unless you steal things back in your world."

"I stole a pack of Reese's once."

"What?!"

"Once, Limp noodle. And that's not enough for me to be a crook."

Link let out a huff, and we proceeded across a high bridge that stretched across a large ravine. "It better have been once."

"Aww," I pouted "Do you suddenly not trust me? I'm wounded..."

"I never said that!" The boy retorted, pitch rising slightly "I just know stealing isn't good—"

"Hey! Link! Y/N!!!"

"Huh?" We eyed each other in confusion when a distant voice called out to us.

"Look below! Down here!"

Link and I sprinted to the side of the bridge and looked over, where our royal fish friend was waving at us below. How he was able to call out to us, I don't know.

"You're still pretty far off, my friends! But I was sure you'd pass over this bridge, so I've been waiting for you! You will be in Zora's Domain before you know it!"

I rested an elbow on the railings and raised an eyebrow, coming to the realisation that since he could get around so quickly in the water... couldn't he just take us there on his back?! Is this a test or something? We got no time for tests, I have enough of those at home!

"Woah! Look out, you two!" Sidon suddenly shrieked "A monster approaches from behind you!"

What?

"A monster?" Link repeated as he spun around, only to see a large horned beast charging towards us with a club. I gasped and my blonde companion pushed me behind him, sword in hand "Get to the other side of the bridge, Y/N. I got this."

I scoffed at his confidence and crossed my arms "I don't think you do."

"Yes I d— woah!" He quickly rolled out the way then the monster brought its club down, nearly squishing the dude in the process. He growled and shot forward, only to be kicked in the stomach and sent rolling across the slippery surface. When he stopped by my feet and quickly stood, his Shiekah slate in his hand as he selected the bomb rune. My eyes widened.

"Link don't! You might blow up the bridge!"

"It's fine." He waved off, ready to throw the bomb.

You know when I said he was too cocky? This is what I meant.

"I said don't!" I snatched the bomb and tossed it over the bridge and into the water below, and Link gave me an angry look.

"Really?"

"Do you know how expensive repairs are?"

"No?"

"Neither do I," I admitted "But I bet it ain't pretty!"

The monster seemed to get frustrated at the lack of attention and charged at us again, which resulted in us jumping back with a surprised yelp. Well, Link backflipped... he's so extra.

"Okay, that's it—" he stopped when he failed to grab something from his back "Huh? Where's my bow?!"

"I have it! You clearly can't fight without help right now!" I declared while pulling the string back and placing an arrow to it, disregarding the boy's annoyed complaint and focusing on the monster completely.

Okay, Y/N... remember what Damia told you...

I let out a breath, letting everything around me fade... and then I released the arrow.

And...

It missed.

"Wow," was Link's disappointed, deadpanned response "And you seemed so into it, t—"

"I'm learning!" I snapped back.

Both of us turned to the monster when it let out a spine chilling roar, our breaths hitching as it once again gained on us. I tossed Link's bow back to him and took my spear out in desperation. I still had no idea how to use us, but... I had to try.

"Ready?" Link asked, gripping his sword. I gulped.

"As I'll ever be..."

Link and I let out a war cry, and together we charged towards the pig nosed fiend.

A/N: HaHA! How I've missed making cliffhangers.

Wow, so this is my first actual author note on this book, isn't it? Well then... Hi. I'm Silver, I write what you're here to read. Nice to meet you.

Well anyway, I'm here because I want to apologise for my uploads being all over the place. I've never really had an upload schedule that really stuck with me.

I really need to manage my time better, hehe...

But if you do want a schedule, just let me know and I'll do my best to make one and follow it! If I can stop procrastinating...

Another thing. Thank you SO MUCH for 1K reads! I had no idea how quickly this book was gonna blow up, it's amazing! Some of you must really like Link, huh? In any case, thank you to everyone who has read this. It means the world to me...

OH

Wait

I don't think I've really shown this yet

Okay yeah, I know it's terrible, and I know not all of you meet the characteristics of this lass. But this is how I picture Y/N when I write this. Well, what she wears, anyway...

But yeah I think that's everything I wanted to ramble about.

I'll try and get a new chapter out soon, I promise!!!!

Well then, I'll see ya next time. And I hope you enjoyed this slightly longer chapter (Might start making longer chapters from now on) Bye!

~Silver~
