eleven
11|| last day of school
"I'll miss this place, crappy food and all."
Carter High School, May 2016-
Alison stared up at the clock. This day couldn't go any faster. It was her last day at Carter High, and she didn't want to waste a second of it. Well actually, maybe she did. Alison wasn't really sure how she was supposed to feel about leaving the school.
The bell ending fourth period sounded, and everyone arose from their seats. Alison pulled her backpack from under her seat, and walked out of the classroom.
Navigating the halls at Carter sucked. There were football players tossing balls everywhere, nerds clutching onto books, kids running through the hallways, and "popular" girls walking in cliques.
Alison ducked under the footballs being chucked through the hallways, and made it all the way to her locker. She gave a small breath of relief.
Alison pulled up to her locker, throwing her bag into her locker carelessly. Alison grabbed her phone out of the front pocket of the bag, along with her earbuds. She shoved the earbuds into her pockets, her phone being slipped into her back pocket.
As soon as she got the supplies she needed, Alison slammed the locker door shut, the lock clanging against the door. The lock bounced back and forth on the locker.
Alison sighed, and walked away from her locker. She walked towards the cafeteria, it being lunchtime for the first years.
Other freshmen pushed and shoved in the hallways, heading off towards lunch. Alison looked at them with a twinge of regret. They could run off and do whatever they wanted, they had another three years here.
Alison pulled out her neatly wrapped earbuds, plugging them into her half-charged phone. She really didn't want to talk to anyone, and have to explain the fact why she was leaving Carter.
Ali followed the trail of her peers, making her way to the cafeteria. The doors were wide open, full of the scent of crappy food. She winced at the wafting smell, pushing her way deeper into the lunch area.
She walked over to the lunch line, picking up a plastic red lunch tray, and some silverware. Alison slid her tray down the metal aisles, observing what was being served for lunch.
Half of the food was glop. Well, maybe it was better than the mush at that prison, but it still looked like complete crap. The other half was takeout pizza, and the only good thing the lunch ladies made- tater tots.
Alison picked up a plate of pizza, and a little basket full of tater tots. She handed the cashier a five dollar bill. Alison nodded at the man, and walked into the tables.
Aah, The famed tables. Alison sighed. The jocks and cheerleaders were basically on top of each other at a table. She gagged involuntarily. Another table was the nerds, another was the druggies, and another was the IT kids.
Alison's music kept playing in her ears softly, slowly dying out as the song she was listening to ending. As the song ended, she could hear someone shouting her name.
"Hey! Alison!" Lexi hollered, jumping on Ali's backpack, and pulling out the other girl's earbuds.
Alison jumped, whirling around. "Jeez Lexi," she sighed. "You scared the living hell out of me."
"And that was the point." Lexi laughed, staring at Ali's face. "You look like you've seen a ghost." She remarked. "Wait- have you?"
Alison looked at Lexi with an annoyed look. "No, I'm just not ready for this to end." She looked at her friend pretty sadly.
"End? Why would it be coming to an end?" Lexi asked her, confused. "Unless you're graduating high school as a freshman, we've still got another three years here."
"No," Alison sighed. "You are gonna have another three years here." She looked for an empty table, finding one rather quickly. "I'm not." She sat down at the table.
Lexi slid into the bench next to her, giving her a weird look. "Wait, why?" She pulled up her backpack, taking out her premise lunch from home.
"I'm going to Midtown." Alison picked up a tater tot, placing it in her mouth. "Effective next year."
"Midtown?" Lexi looked at her with surprise. "You actually got in there? I didn't know you could be that smart." She teased.
Alison shoved Lexi, slightly pissed off. "No, it's a punishment. For going to the party and-" she cut herself off. Ali couldn't tell anyone, not even Lexi, about what happened in Germany.
"And-" Lexi looked at Ali imploringly. When Alison didn't reply, she gave a huff of exasperation. "Come on man, you can't just cut off like that. What could you do that could make you move to Midtown? That's a pretty high price."
"I can't tell you." Alison muttered. She took another tater tot, eating it quickly. Ali wiped her hands on her napkin.
"Can't tell me?" Lexi gave Alison a shocked expression. "Alison, we've been friends since the first grade," She placed her hand on Alison's shoulder. "Whatever happened, you can tell me."
"I'm sorry," Alison shrugged Lexi's hand off of Ali's shoulder. "I'll tell you soon, I just can't right now." She looked away, disappointed.
Lexi leaned back slightly on the bench. "Ok man," She looked at Alison coldly. "If you don't want to share, it's fine. I didn't need to know anyway." Lexi got up from the seat and walked away.
Alison knew that there wasn't any arguing with a pissed off Lexi, so she grabbed her earbuds again, letting the music drown out the rest of her shitty lunch.

The final bell of the school day rang, and Alison plugged in her earbuds. Since the fight with Lexi, everything was a blur. She didn't want to talk to anyone, and she was done with the school.
Although somewhere in her mind she knew she was making a mistake, Alison didn't really care. If tomorrow she would never see these people again, what was the point?
Alison got her bike out of the rack in front of the school. She wheeled it out of the parking lot, and with one last look at the school, she biked off to pick up her brother.
By the time she had gotten to Midtown, most of the kids were already getting picked up, and Charles was left with only a few of his friends. Alison parked her bike in front of the pick up area.
"Charles!" She hollered, waving her arms. "Grab your bike! It's time to go!"
Charles gave her an over exaggerated thumbs up, and ran over to grab his bike. He put on his helmet, and rode shakily off of the curb.
"Hey Alison!" Charles exclaimed with a smile. "How was your day?" He looked over the moon about something.
Alison shrugged. "Eh, same ol, same ol. How was your day?" She asked, noticing his eyes sparkling with joy. "You look pretty happy about something squirt." Alison smiled slightly, her younger brother already making her bad day slightly better.
"You know the Spider-Man?" Charles looked at Ali expectantly. Alison gave him a small nod. "Well I found out from a friend that at the BIG battle in Germany he was there! And tell this-" He started to ride out of the lot, Alison trailing close behind him. "A new superhero was there! I heard from ANOTHER-" he emphasized the other,"-friend that it was a girl with super speed!" Charles gushed.
"That's a lot to take in Charles." Alison thought aloud, pedaling the Queens streets with no helmet. She realized her own brother was getting on her trail, and she had to be cautious about what she said. After all, Charles would probably want to hear more about the "field trip" to Germany, as she was there during the battle.
"But it's so cool!" He geeked out. "I mean, the girl could be a new superhero here in New York!" Charles gave a little gasp, realizing something . "Or she could be a new Avenger! That's so cool!" He gushed.
Alison laughed. "I bet so bud," she glided along the bike trail towards their apartment. "Anything else Mr. Theorist?" She teased, giving a small laugh.
"Nope." Charles laughed with Alison. He biked towards Alison, who was starting to bike faster than him. "Wait for me!" He exclaimed.
"You're going to slow!" Alison chuckled. "We need to get home! After all, I have a curfew now." She rolled her eyes.
"That's why we don't go out drinking Ali," Charles sighed. "I even warned you before you went out."
"You sound like a parent." Alison smiled at Charles. "Are you sure that you want to be a scientist when you're older? You'd be great at being a parent, you know, scolding kids and all."
"Oh shut up," Charles laughed with Alison. "Let's get home, I have homework to do."
The two biked off towards the apartment, racing away into the horizon.
