Chapter 1: The De-la-Fuertes Household

"No daughter of mine will ever be less than perfect."

That is what Alejandro De-la-Fuertes has always said to his two girls. To him, the youth of the new generation is being poisoned, and he wants to raise his girls the 'proper way'. So, on a daily basis, it's gowns every night for a random party they're being dragged off to, hair done up in a fancy style, make-up always done no matter what, and only the finest clothes for them to wear.

Alexándrea's sister Carmen hated it. She couldn't stand all of the rules that their father had put in place for them, all the crazy expectations and goals that he had set up.

---

"I can't take it any more Alex! He's driving me crazy!" A 14 year old Carmen said, as the two were in their shared room. An 11 year old Alexándrea clutched her little teddy bear.

"But what can you do, sis?" She asked, sitting on her sisters bed cross legged. Would her sister leave her behind all alone to deal with their father? How would she survive without her trusty big sister to help her along the way? Carmen sighed and pulled Alexándrea into her lap.

"I don't know yet, but one day, the both of us will run away. We'll never have to deal with any of this stuff ever again."

"Promise?" Alexándrea asked, looking up at her sister with big and hopeful brown eyes.

"Cross my heart and hope to die."

---

Carmen left when she was 16, leaving her thirteen year old sister to deal with her father all on her own. It's been a living hell for Alexándrea ever since then, more than it usually was. Her sister made it bearable.

But now she was gone.

Her father had found out that Carmen had taken a liking to girls, and he did not approve at all. The night he met Carmen's girlfriend, there was so much yelling that not even Alexándrea's headphones could block it out.

---

"WHAT?!"

Carmen winced at her fathers raised voice, slyly wrapping an arm around her girlfriends waist without her father noticing.

"You heard me, papa. This is my girlfriend, Maria." The young woman beside Carmen gave a small wave, trying to ease the tension between all three of them.

"No." Said Mr. De-la-Fuertes, regaining himself after his small outburst.

"Excuse me?" Carmen said, giving her father a look that said, ' you better not repeat yourself.'

"You heard exactly what I said, Carmen. You are not to see this... Maria again, and she will never be your girlfriend. You are to have a boyfriend, one I deem fit, and you shall marry that man once you reach that age. This," he waved his hand at Maria dismissively, "this is just a phase, one that we shall not revisit.

That made Carmen's blood boil. "How could you say that?!" She shouted, removing her arm from around Maria's waist. "This is who I am, you should be a gracious father and accept that, not be an asshole about it!"

"Watch your language young woman! And I am being gracious, I am telling you that this is not the path that life has chosen for you!"

"You mean the path that you've chosen for me!" Carmen shouted, her hands slowly curling into fists as her temper rose. "I'm done with all of the rules and expectations you have for me! I'm leaving!" Turning on her heel, Carmen grabbed Maria's hand and dragged her out of her house.

Meanwhile, Alexándrea was in tears, as she had heard the entire ordeal through her opened door and music blasting in her ears. Her last thought before she heard the door slam was a phrase she never thought she'd have to say.

"But you promised."

---

Since then, Alexándrea and her father haven't been the same. Every now and again, the news will have a segment that is about the band that Carmen and Maria had formed with some of their friends, but Mr. De-la-Fuertes will just immediately change the channel, or just turn the television off completely.

Every day, Alexándrea's heart breaks a little more, not knowing where her sister is, or how close she is to her. Her house wasn't the same, nor would it ever be until Carmen was back in her life.

Not to mention how Alexándrea was pulled out of school and forced into home-schooling. She didn't mind it, but she thought that her fathers reason was completely absurd.

"This generation is too focused on this gay rights stuff. It's poisoning your brains and pressuring you into same-sex relationships. Look at what happened to Carmen! I will not let my youngest daughters' mind be poisoned by today's youth."

Truthfully, Alexándrea had no idea whether she preferred boys over girls, or girls over boys. She was still extremely confused about that side of her, but she dare not let her father find out. She just confided in her ever expanding journal, and her music.

Her music...

It said things that Alexándrea dare not speak aloud, it said more about herself than she ever could. If you looked at her playlist, you could see her life's story in every single song. Her music was a part of her.

It was her.

There was nothing better that she could think of than staying inside on a nice rainy day, lying on her bed while listening to her MP3 player and thinking of the impossible, or reflecting on her day, possibly her life.

There was nothing she would rather do in the De-la-Fuertes household than listen to her life on a playlist.
