Ordeal 5 - Jump
The pillar rose me up to high above the water, I looked out over the water as more pillars rose forming a pathway to the land.
Should I follow the path?
I looked around confused, I couldn't see the strange creature or the man in the suit anywhere. Was I finally alone?
My heart sank as a loud roar echoed behind me. I spun on my heel and turned to see the giant octopus creature surface, the creature then began to morph into an unspeakable creature. It's purple slimy skin roughing into scales, its tenticles changing into large wings which allowed for it to fly.
My heart began to race as it lurched forward, obvious that it wanted to attack me.
I quickly spun back around and began leaping over the pillars. With each step, the monster gained on me. My heart beat in sync with my steps.
Boom. Thump. Boom. Thump. Boom.
My foot reached the edge of the land and slipped off of it, I struck out my arms and caught myself before I fell to my death. I pulled myself up, back onto the cliff and continued running.
I didn't turn back to check on the beast, but I could still hear the flapping of its wings behind me. I swallowed hard as I ran, my legs and feet beginning to ache from the running.
I looked back and noticed that the creature had vanished from sight. Feeling a calm sensation, I slowly came to a stop and turned around.
There was nothing.
Till I looked up.
The beast dive bombed straight towards me, with my quick thinking, I crouched down and barrel rolled out of the way. As I rolled to a stop and leaned on my knees, I watched as the beast crashed into the ground, got back up and shook off the impact as though it were nothing.
Oh dear.
I quickly stumbled to my feet and darted away from creature again. An ear piercing screech echoed behind me as the flapping of the beast's wings pounded behind me.
I frantically looked around, searching for a way to ditch the creature.
As I came to a clearing, I could see a large canyon coming up in the distance. The corners of my mouth curled up into a slight grin as I planned my escape from the creature.
I looked back to see if the beast was still following me, my heart stopped for a moment when I couldn't see it.
It's going to dive bomb again.
I looked up, and spotted the spot in the sky that was the beast. It rushed down for another dive bomb.
I gotta get out of here!
I quickly picked up my speed and charged towards the canyon's edge.
I've kayaked through crazy rapids, jumped off of a mountain, and into a giant cave hole, and somehow survived being undertoed in the shallow end of the beach; I'm sure I can survive jumping off a cliff into a canyon.
The beast crashed down hard into the earth's surface. The impact caused a sonic boom like earthquake which tripped me up, I landed on my stomach and rolled over to my back to see the beast shaking the dirt out of it's scaled like skin.
Why can't this thing give me a break?
I stumbled back to my feet, exhaustion soon taking over me. My heart racing faster, my breaths having a hard time keeping up with each beat.
I huffed and panted hard, my throat began to feel as though the air I inhaled was piercing through it. Pain jolted through my body, I wanted to stop running, but I couldn't.
I could never stop running, if I did, I would be giving in to defeat. I would not let that be an option.
I clenched my fists tightly, my knuckles cracking as my fingers formed into fists. I moved my arms up and down by my sides as I pushed off the earth with more force, all in an attempt to increase my speed.
The pounding of my feet against the ground echoed through my mind and soon began to morph into the beating of my heart. As I ran, I tried to control my breathing, making sure not to lose my breath and stumble out of control.
The pounding of the beast's wings merged with the beating of my heart as a loud beating sound filled my mind, the beating caused me to lose track of the flapping of the beast's wings.
So I was caught off guard when another shock waved knocked me off my feet, this time I tumbled a bit off path and slowly rolling into a tree.
When I finally stopped the world from spinning in my head, I got up and balanced myself using the tree as a crutch.
As the beast readied itself too, I began to run once again. This time, the pain stopped me from going as fast as I was going before.
I didn't care, I could see the cliff in the distance in front of me. I would soon be free from running.
Hoping that once I jumped, the beast would stop following me, I focused solely on the cliff and moved all of my energy to my legs.
As I got closer to the cliff, a I smiled wide.
I approached the edge and slowed my pace yet my heart continued to race. I stopped before slowly walking towards the edge of the cliff, I looked down and analyzed the drop, noting the river at the bottom.
I looked behind me to see the beast still charging at me. I smirked as I slowly backed up a few feet in front of the edge, before I jolted towards the cliff. Just before the edge, I pushed off and leapt into the air.
For a brief moment, everything seemed to go into slow motion as I casually drifted through the air. As I began to fall, I directed myself towards the river, hoping that it was deep enough to soften my landing.
As I fell, I glanced back to witness the beast soar quickly past the canyon's opening. It went by so quickly that it felt as though it wasn't after me at all. Confusion filled my mind as I looked back to the closely approaching river.
I took a deep breath before breaking through the river and creating a huge splash. I reached out for a rock as the force of the river began to pull me off target.
My hand tightly grasped a sharp, jagged rock, slightly piercing my hand and drawing blood. I winced slightly, air bubbles escaping my mouth.
With my other hand, I reached for another rock, slowly pulling myself against the current towards land.
Slowly but surely, I managed to pull myself up onto the safe land and out of the rushing water. Panting lightly, I looked ahead of me and saw the shiny black dress shoes of the man in the suit.
Fudge...
I sighed and closed my eyes, not wanting to look up at him.
"What's next?" I groaned, just wanting the torture to be over.
