Chapter 22:

My Mom was running out of the house the second we pulled up. I was surprised to see my Dad right behind her on her heels. He must have just gotten home from Grandma's house. He had been hiding from me for over three weeks. I'm glad to see he was finally showing a little concern for me again.

"Thanks for calling." My Mom said as we climbed out of the car. "Jessa, how are you feeling? Are you ok?"

She ran over to me and placed her hands on my cheeks to look into my eyes. She was looking for anything that would give her any indication that I was off the rails again.

"I'm fine, Mom. Still not crazy yet." I smiled at her.

Cam looked over at me, frowning. I dared him back with my eyes to tell them otherwise. I would love to see the look on his face while he was trying to explain that I slept naked in his bed last night. It would be even better when he told them I was fingering myself as he watched. Go ahead, Cam. Please tell them how out of my mind I was last night when I came underneath you.

Cam went to start to open his mouth and his cheeks turned pink with embarrassment. I was glad his brain thought about it a little before he opened his mouth and inserted his foot.

My Dad stood back, looking between us with his mouth hanging open.

He turned to me as he assessed my appearance. Baggy shirt, baggy sweatpants, wild hair, and no bra. He turned an evil eye towards Cam, who was too busy to notice because he was still staring at me too. I adored Cam, but I was still mad at him for involving my family. He had no right to call them and get them all riled up. He deserved my Dad's wrath for tattling on me. I wasn't even going to warn him that it was coming. Three...two...one...

"What the fuck is this?" My Dad's tone went four octaves higher and he stepped towards Cam. He motioned up and down my body like it was making the situation better. It only made Cam's eyes follow the shape of my curves as he followed the movement of my Dad's hand. His eyes lingered on my chest.

I should let them get into a fight in the front yard. It would be a little entertaining for a small second. Cam had the cop moves, but my Dad was a monster. It could be a pretty epic battle. Of course, my Mom would jump in and try to stop it before it went too far. I looked over at her and she was moving to step in between them already. Cue one Mom diplomatic interference...

"Ezra, it doesn't mean anything." My Mom said, stepping in to push him back from Cam.

This was too good. We should do this at least once a week.

"Don't play stupid. You know what it means, Riley." My Dad's eyes were bugging out of his head as he looked down at my Mom. I think there was a vein trying to escape from his forehead.

"Mr. Miller. I promise you. I would never hurt Jessa. I love your..." My Mom surprised us all when she spun around quickly and covered Cam's mouth midsentence.

Finish the sentence Cami... you love his wife. I knew it!

"Not today." She said, giving him one of her infamous stares.

"Get in the house Jessa." My Dad pushed his hair off his face.

Now it was my turn to be pissed at him.

"Why, Dad? It's not like you really care what happens to me. You left for three weeks without even calling me. I am sorry I'm such a big fat disappointment to you that you don't even want to be in the same room as me." I screamed at him.

"Is that what you really think? Do you think that I don't love you? There's nothing further from the truth." My Dad's anger started to subside into hurt.

"Disappearing for weeks at a time is a great way to show it, Dad. You left me when I needed you. You were supposed to be here." I was screaming at him. At some point, Cam wrapped his arms around me to hold me back. I barely felt him touching me through the anger.

"Jessa, I told him to go. I didn't give him a choice." My Mom said, looking at my Dad. He walked over and wrapped his arms around her. She leaned back into him like nothing was wrong.

My blood was boiling. The kettle was on the burner and it was turned up on high. The steam was shrieking inside my head. She wasn't going to get out of this that easily.

"What? You made him leave?" I screamed. "What the hell is wrong with you? I spent weeks thinking he hated me! You kept him from seeing me! You are such a fucking bitch!"

My Mom looked like I just slapped her across the face. I wanted to. I wanted to hit her so hard her head spun around and then I would hit it again. She needed to apologize to my Dad and me. She was selfish. There was not a considerate bone in her too-tiny body.

"I didn't make him leave to hurt you." My Mom said softly. "He had to go so he didn't hurt himself."

I froze.

"What the hell does that mean?" I broke free from Cam long enough to pull my hair. I was so frustrated. Why were they talking in cryptic code? If they were going to make decisions that affected my life, then they should have at least had the decency to tell me what was really going on.

I looked back at Cam for anything, a hint, a clue, some sort of recognition of what was happening. He shrugged at me with a stupid look on his face. I didn't really expect him to have any answers; I just didn't know what to do with myself. I didn't even want to look towards my parents or I might blow up again.

"Cameron, thank you for bringing Jessa home." My Dad said in a controlled voice. "I think we need to clear some things up as a family. She will call you soon."

"Jess, are you going to be ok?" Cameron asked, looking down awkwardly. I could tell he wasn't sure if leaving me here was the right thing to do.

"I'll be fine, Cam." I said, reaching up over his shoulders to hug him. He pulled me in tightly and ran his hands up and down over my back.

My Dad cleared his throat, indicating that he thought it was time for the hug to end. Even though I wanted to push it, I fought my nature and just let my Dad have the win. I was in no mood to start fighting with him again. I had a feeling there would be plenty of drama without my inner twelve-year-old adding to the damage that had been done.

"Bye, Cheese Puff!" Jax screamed from the front porch and flipped Cameron off.

What was with this family? No wonder I was so messed up.
