Rebel's Mercy
Title: Rebel's Mercy
Author: WhumpCentral
I don't normally like fan fiction because unless you know it, it's hard to follow. I wouldn't even say this is fan fiction, necessarily, since there are so many Star Wars arcs and authors out there. This is my review of the novel.
Score: 8/10
Title: It pretty much sums up the entire idea of the book. Hux is taken in by the rebellion. Great job at not overthinking the title (I'm so bad at that).
Cover: The cover shows two main characters and the color balance, red and blue, used to portray the different sides again reinforces the book's plot and goes well with the title.
Plot: The plot is incredible, and everything I'd expect from an actual Star Wars movie or a published novel. There's betrayal, action, fight scenes, and of course, the balance of light and darkness, good versus evil, within a person. Well done. I really can't elaborate, I honestly thought it was awesome. The author's writing is very detailed and it is easy to imagine the scenes as they are happening.
The only issues that docked points were that the chapters were very short and the paragraphs were extremely long. Some of them were as long as the chapter itself. I would either elaborate on some of the chapters or combine some of them to lengthen them. Even if the chapters are excellently written, which these definitely were, readers will sometimes feel like there wasn't enough description if the chapters are short.
The lack of clear paragraphs also made it difficult to shift between action sequences and the like. Between different actions or speech, there should be a clear break.
Characters: The characters were true to the Star Wars legacy. Honestly, I couldn't find anything wrong with them. The only thing that maybe bugged me was the rebellion's acceptance of Hux. I think in reality, they'd be a little more on edge when around him.
Grammar, spelling, punctuation: I couldn't find any glaring errors. The entire thing was very well written. I could tell a lot of effort went into this novel.
Overall, this would have been a 9 out of 10 if the paragraphs and chapter length were corrected. I really enjoyed the plot line and how the author stuck to the characters' original personalities. The vocabulary and sentence structure were on par, the action sequences were amazing and the entire thing just blew my mind. Again, it is very hard to do fan fiction or something similar, and this one took the cake. Very fun, engaging read! Go check it out y'all!
