The Seoul skyline dulled down as gray clouds loomed over it, beginning to rumble slowly.
Namjoon's mercedes rolled into the driveway of the seoul park complex exactly at 5, stopping in front of a familiar middle aged blonde, dressed in a long trench coat and rain boots.
He rolled down the tinted window and exchanged a silent greeting with the elder before turning off his engine and stepping out.
Dressed in his prim and proper work suit as always, coupled with a pair of shining dress shoes and a pair of light orange tinted sunglasses, he looked pretty out of place, which had Soekjin stiffle a chuckle.
Then they began to walk. It was silent for a while, both not knowing what to say to the other when Namjoon's cleared his throat to ease the tension.
"I've been thinking about something," he started pushing his hands inside the pockets of his trousers, "When I asked you to help me break my son's relationship with yours, you could have just talked to Taehyung about it. I know my son won't listen to me that's why I had to choose this way but Taehyung seems to be a nice boy. The relationship between the two of you seems to be nice as well. It makes me assume that if you'd ask him to do something for you , he would."
Jin sighed slowing his steps before he stopped and looked over at the other.
"You're right. Taehyung would do anything I ask him to do for me. Even break up with the boy he loves, but... "
Namjoon turned his head and looked at the elder who was now kicking his shoes, looking guilty.
"But?"
"I can't ask that of him." Jin replied quietly and they began to walk again.
"And Why is that?" The younger questioned growing curious. He never understood a close father son relationship because he didn't have one.
"Taehyung was five when his mother died of cancer. She had been struggling through several years and even around the end she told me she didn't want to die. She said she wanted to live for us, me and her little boy and do everything a mother does to keep her family happy. She couldn't, ofcourse but after she left I took it upon me to complete her wish. To become a mother and a father to Taehyung who's my only family left and give him all the happiness he deserves. Since then I haven't stopped Taehyung from doing anything that gave him happiness, rather I've supported and guided him through it."
Namjoon had gotten silent after his soliloquy. His eyes were set afar as he let the elder's words sink in his head.
"Now about Jeongguk," Jin continued, answering his first question, " I know he's a player and has high tendencies to break my son's heart but I still couldn't get myself to demand a split in between them without some proper reason. I agreed to your proposal because I'm very protective of my son, but I also backed out when I thought maybe your son wasn't that bad afterall. Turns out I was wrong again. "
Namjoon looked at the elder's cross expression at the end of the sentence and the same guilt from the afternoon washed over his face.
"I'm sorry you and Taehyung have to go through this. I can't help but think maybe it's my fault my son has turned out to be like this. " Namjoon said, looking guilty as retracted his hands from his pockets and took off his sunglasses with a sigh.
Soekjin glanced at the younger and then back at the concrete below his boots.
"If you don't mind me asking, why is your relationship with Jeongguk the way it is?"
Namjoon sighed again, slipping his glasses in his pocket and eyeing the gray sky.
"I was seventeen when I had jeongguk, as a result of a one night stand." He confessed, his cheeks flushing slightly.
Soekjin stopped in his track , looking over to the younger in surprise.
"Yeah you do look young." He nodded at his own words, scanning Namjoon's face who simply shrugged.
"Sumni and i didn't love each other but we had to marry because I got her pregnant and her father was the owner of this huge chain of hotels in South Korea and he couldn't afford to get rumours around. He gave me a job as the general manager of seoul headquarters and I had to leave my own home in Busan. I was young, too young to know how to be a good father. I spent most of my time at work in order to impress my father in law and left Jeongguk with the maids. Sumni was hardly in town, but whenever she visited she made sure to spend a lot of time with our son which explains his maternal inclination. He grew up with the maids, got what he wanted and no one ever stopped him."
Soekjin was taken aback. He knew the life of the rich was different, but he hadn't expected it to be this... Hollow. He started to feel bad as he remembered Jeongguk's innocent yet rebellious face from last time.
"Is it why you're forcing your son to be straight? To keep your business name up?" He asked, trying not to sound critical but he knew he did.
"No! Hyung!" Namjoon replied quickly, stopping in his track and whipping to look at the elder's judgmental expression, " I'm not that bad! I'm just... I'm just looking out for him that's all."
Soekjin caught the last part that Namjoon had mumbled under his breath after looking away.
"How can you be looking after him when you're clearly forcing him to behave a certain way he is not?" He asked crossing his arms at his chest.
Namjoon dropped his head, eyes stuck to his shoes at the elder's words.
"I know how it looks like. That I don't care about what my son wants and I'm forcing him to listen to me. But it's all I could have thought of to save him. When I joined the company I was a teen who came from the country side and knew nothing. Everyone looked down upon me, especially my father in law. He was under the impression that I trapped Sumni on purpose to get this job which wasn't true. All my life I've spent trying to prove myself to them. To prove that I was worth it. I just don't want them to look down upon Jeongguk the same way. I don't want to give them a reason to judge him like they did to me. Sumni was furious when she learnt about Jeongguk's relationship and asked me to fix it. The truth is , hyung... Even if I allow him to do whatever he liked, our world will never accept him. I just don't want him to be an outcast."
Namjoon was still looking at his feet, the cool breeze that flew between making him shiver when he felt a warm hand on his shoulder. He looked up at the elder blonde staring back at him with a warm smile.
"I know how parent's think Namjoon-ah. Close or not, we're always looking out for our children in our own ways. Dont stress about it. You're doing a good job and I'm proud of you."
Soekjin's hushed words of encouragement swirled in the air, and Namjoon swore he felt a huge weight lifted off his chest. He felt his eyes tear up and he quickly pulled out his glasses, putting them back on and sniffling unnoticeably.
Namjoon quickly regained his composure and cleared his throat, flashing the elder a dimpled smile.
"Where are we going?" He asked looking around for a familiar mop of black hair they had been here for.
"We have to cross the road. He's going to be on the other side." Soekjin informed turning towards the road that was bustling with vehicles.
"Then let us?" Namjoon said, watching the signal go red and stepped down the raised pavement to cross the road when he felt a tug at his arm.
"Wait!" Soekjin shouted , stepping beside him on the road and dropped his hand down to clutch the younger's palm in his own large one.
Namjoon looked at the blonde beside him in surprise, the darkening sky successfully covering up the blush that had formed on his cheeks at the unexpected contact.
"I'm sorry I... am scared of the roads and vehicles. " Jin said, looking down as his own ears flushed a baby pink in embarrassment.
Namjoon shook his head and let out a short laugh, pulling the older across the road hand in hand.
