Blood Paw Pack
Noctis
I am currently in my snowy white wolf in the forest laying next to my duffel bag. I am on no-man's land but I have no clue where. I just ran from the pack house and never looked back. I am taking a break right now before continuing my trek. When I left, I caught wind of Ash in a nearby town. I managed to get through without him finding me. That was hours ago so I don't think he sniffed me out. I feel my eyes grow heavy and soon I find the darkness of sleep consuming me.
My eyes snap open as I look around. I am still in the forest but I am now in my human form. Weird. I take a good look at my surroundings and my heart rate picks up. There are bodies of hundreds of wolves littering the ground and blood is everywhere. I look down at myself and my hands are covered in blood and I can see blood covering my body head to toe.
My throat starts to close as I panic and tears fill my eyes. I start running from the horrifying scene. My foot catches in a tree root causing me to fall hard to the ground. I crawl backwards until my back hits a tree. I pull my knees up towards my chest and place my head in them. I try to take deep breaths to calm myself down.
"Hey? Are you alright?" I hear a voice, but it is faint and I don't recognize it.
I lift my head from my position and look around to see myself back in the woods where I fell asleep. There are no bodies or blood anywhere, it was just a nightmare. No, it was a memory. I feel a hand touch my shoulder and I grab it while pushing the person into the ground with a knee on their back and their hand still in mine.
"Woah lady, calm down," the man says in an English accent.
He is a rogue so I be careful as I let go of him and stand up. He gets up to his feet and dusts off his pants.
"What are you doing here?" I ask him.
"I was just making my way through the forest when I heard a scream followed by whimpering. I thought someone was being killed or something so I followed the noise until I saw you laying on the ground, asleep. You alright?"
"I'm fine," I tell him and grab my bag before walking further into the forest.
I hear his footsteps coming closer to me and I roll my eyes. Can he just leave so I can shift and continue running? He soon falls in step with me.
"So, where are you headed?" He asks, trying to make a conversation.
"It's none of your business," I defensively say.
"Well, maybe we are headed to the same place."
"That would be kind of hard since I don't have a place in mind," I say before I can stop myself.
"Well then, why don't we be travel buddies?"
I look at him accusingly, "Why is a British rogue here in the states?"
"Wanted a change of scenery," he shrugs.
"And you just happen to stumble across me when my mate is from England?" I raise an accusing eyebrow.
"Really? Maybe I know him. What's his name?"
"I am not falling for that one. Look, if you want to follow me like a puppy, be my guest, but if I find out you are helping my mate, so help me goddess I will kill you."
He gulps, "Good thing I am not helping this mystery guy then. So, what's a girl like you doing as a rogue?"
"I left my pack for the army and I am not ready to go back. They aren't ready for me to come back either."
"I have got to be honest, you are the only female rogue I have met, let alone a vet." I nod and he introduces himself, "I'm Callum."
"Noctis," I say as I continue to walk.
His footsteps stop and I panic for a moment thinking he knows who I am. I pick up my pace and he shouts, "Don't!"
I look back at him confused and then I feel it. I just stepped in a pack territory. My eyes widen and I take a few steps back so I leave the territory. Odd, where are the guards?
"Jesus, don't give me a heart attack like that!" Callum exclaims.
I roll my eyes, "What territory is this?" Curiosity in my voice.
"I'm not sure, I haven't been this way before. Why don't we head into town and we can probably find out from there."
I think for a moment and shrug my shoulders as I follow the buzzing noise of the city. After a twenty minute walk, we make our way out of the forest and onto the sidewalk. Callum starts walking and I decide to follow him since he seems like he knows what he is doing. This is the closest city to the pack territory and there isn't any pack wolves here. Only humans and rogues. This just keeps getting weirder.
"Hey, can you tell us what pack territory is about twenty minute walk into the woods?" Callum asks a random rogue.
"Uh, sure? It is the Blood Paw Pack."
"I thought they broke apart," I comment. That was Brae's pack.
"Everyone else thought so too, but the boarders are still up. All us rogues think that the pack is still there and faked breaking apart."
I nod trying to look convincing. They definitely all went their separate ways. I mean Mom is back home, I think Lily is in the Dark Sky Pack and then Ace was in Canada last I heard. There is no way any pack members are still at that pack house.
"I have heard horror stories about that pack. Apparently the Deadly Duo are a part of that pack."
I snort, I forgot about Brae and Ace's nickname. That's priceless. I walk back into the woods in the direction of the pack territory lines. Hopefully Callum will just leave when I cross into the territory. Maybe he will be too chicken to follow me.
"Where are you going?" I hear Callum call from behind me as he jogs my way.
"I'm going back there," I shrug.
"Back wher...back to the territory? Are you crazy?"
"Probably, feel free to leave me alone," I tell him.
"I am not letting you do a suicide mission. You are not going into the most feared pack's territory."
"Most feared?" I chuckle.
Brae, if you can hear me, you still have the most feared pack even though there is no pack left.
"Why are you laughing?"
"As you stated, I am crazy," I shrug.
"Come on, let's move onto the next town."
"No, I am going to the Blood Paw Pack. You can head to the next town if you want to."
I can feel his conflicting emotions before he seems to have made up his mind and followed me to the territory. I have to admit, this rogue has some balls...or maybe he has a death wish? Either way, he is something else.
We soon arrive at the territory line and I step across it without any fear whereas Callum hesitates. He slowly places his foot down in the territory. He whips his head up to me and his eyes widen with fear.
"I thought you were a rogue," he says, his voice shaky with fear.
My face scrunches with confusion, "I am a rogue, what are you going on about?"
"Y-you are an a-alpha," he stutters.
"What? Your crazy. I'm not an alpha Callum, did you hit your head?" Even if I am going to be next in line for the throne, I only smell like a rogue. That's all anyone could tell back at the Royal Pack. Is he playing with me?
"P-please just l-let m-me leave. J-just don't k-kill me," he stutters again.
"Callum, snap out of it. I am not falling for this joke of yours. Come on," I wave to him to get him to follow me.
He hesitates to follow me, but ends up walking slowly behind me. I can feel his anxiousness from here. We soon come up to the pack house and I feel fear coming off of Callum in waves.
"Calm down Callum, this pack has been vacant for almost twenty years."
"What?"
"My dad's true mate was the Alpha of this pack and she died. Her whole pack went their separate ways after that."
"The alpha of this pack was a girl? Wait, the alpha of this pack was your dad's first mate?"
"Yes and yes. I have no clue why the territory lines are still up after all this time and I intend on finding out."
Callum thinks for a while before a lightbulb seems to go off in his head. "Where is the pack library?"
"I don't know."
"Let's go find it. I think I know what's going on," Callum says, determination and excitement in his eyes.
We walk into the pack house and start walking up and down hallways looking for the library. After five minutes, we find two large door and walk into a beautiful library. It seems bigger than the one at Orion's pack. Even though this pack house isn't very big, the library is still two stories high.
I head to the werewolf history section to test out my theory as Callum walks in another direction. I scan the books until I see the one I was looking for. Anomalies in the Supernatural World. They have books that only the Royal Pack is supposed to have.
"Hey! I found it!" Callum shouts.
I follow his scent before seeing him sitting on the floor of the library. I sit across from him and wait for him to explain. I notice the book he is holding is about Alpha's and Luna's.
"So, you seem to be a True Alpha, one that emerges when they find their territory. They have usually gone through tough times before getting to forming their own pack. Once that happens, everyone will recognize them as an Alpha and territory lines will form."
"Well then why would the territory lines stay up all these years?"
"I was getting to that," Callum states and looks back at the book, "If a pack claims the territory of a True Alpha before they do, the pack will befall a great tragedy causing them to abandon the land and the line will remain for the True Alpha."
"What is a True Alpha?" I wonder. I have never heard of them.
"There is only ever one or two True Alphas born every century. They are born leaders and they are always...." he stops talking as he rereads the same spot on the page.
"They are always what?"
"They are always male."
