A Year Later...
Noctis
"Kilo!" I hear Tobias shout to me.
We are currently in Iraq, tracking down some werewolves that killed a bunch of our troops. Tobias and I are the only ones that know what we are hunting. Tobias and I have become really good friends in the time we have been on tour together.
"What is it, Branch?" I shout back.
"It's Carson, I can't find him!" He yells as he runs up to me.
"Where the hell could he have gone in the hour since we last saw him?" I wonder.
"I think I have an idea," Tobias replies in an annoyed tone.
I roll my eyes, "That twat needs to keep it in his pants."
"I agree with ya sister," Tobias sighs.
Carson tends to sleep with anything and everything that moves meaning he tends to go a-wall every so often.
"Lieutenant Kilo, come in," my radio goes off.
"This is Lieutenant Kilo," I reply.
"We are in the middle of an attack in the south-east woods. The attackers are....wolves?"
"We are on our way. Try to climb the trees and hide until we get there." I turn to Tobias, "Ready for a fight?"
He nods and we gather Nio and Ren to come with us since Carson is god knows where. We hop in our jeep and race off towards the south-east boarder of the woods. I turn off the engine and we all run into the woods. Nio and Ren have their guns out while Tobias and I are ready to kill these wolves in hand to hand combat.
When we get there, we see a massacre. There are ten soldiers down and I can't pick up on a heartbeat from any other them. I do hear two heartbeats in the trees and then I see the five rogues looking at us like we are fresh meat. They sniff the air and tense when they realize Tobias and I are wolves as well. We are both technically rogues now. When I was on my way to Iraq, I cut off my pack link which made me a rogue and Tobias was born a rogue. He joined the army to help support his mate and daughter at home.
"Leave," I demand, giving them one chance to back down.
They all snarl and start attacking, signing their death sentence. Nio and Ren shoot two wolves between the eyes which will kill them, but it isn't instant. The continue running to the two privates and I kill a rogue that was charging at me before taking out the two heading towards Ren and Nio. Tobias took out the other two wolves and he turns back to me and we fist bump.
"What is their problem?" Tobias asks.
"No clue, insanity?" I respond.
"That was amazing," a women says from the bottom of a tree.
"Thanks. Are you two okay?" I ask her, referring to her companion that is in the tree.
"Uh...yeah. Just a couple claw marks, but all in all we are alright."
"Okay, let's get you both back to base camp," Tobias tells them and a boy jumps down from the tree he was in.
"How did you know I was in the tree?" He asks me.
"Call it intuition," I reply.
We all hop in the Jeep and drive back to the base where we are met with a fuming Carson.
"What the fuck guys? Why did you leave without me?"
"You were off doing god knows what and people were dying. If you don't get your shit together, Carson, you will be thrown out of this platoon," I warn.
"That's not far, no one told me..." I cut him off.
"I shouldn't have to! You should be here with the rest of us so we can all leave easily. One more slip up and you are gone. Got it Carson?"
"Yes Lieutenant."
I take the two we found in the woods to the hospital with Tobias and we head back to our planning tent. Tobias and I clear out everyone who was gathered there so we can talk about the rogues.
"The rogue attacks are happening more and more often. What do you think they want?" Tobias asks.
"To wreak havoc and destruction like most rogue attacks? I want to know why they are targeting soldiers."
"I have no clue. Maybe they are trying to reveal our kind to humans; however, they have never shifted in front of them," Tobias second guesses himself.
"We need to find out quickly and find the rogue base before they kill more soldiers. Our numbers are declining rapidly."
"I agree. Let's look at the map," Tobias pulls out the map that we have been marking all of the attacks on for the last year.
"This is where they attacked today," I point to a spot on the map. The attacks are scattered, but they all lead to the same place, "Can you date the attacks?"
Tobias nods and pulls out his notebook. He numbers the attacks from the first one we got to the one that happened today. I see shock and fear cover Tobias' facial expression before it turned to anger.
"They are targeting the main base. All of their attacks have been getting closer and closer to right here in this very base. The rogues will be surrounding this area and attacking soon," I tell Tobias.
"Are there any other wolves that are soldiers here at the base?" Tobias wonders.
"Let's go find out."
We leave the tent and start wandering around the base, both us us sniffing to try to find any other werewolves. We almost make it to the other side of the base when I smell one. They are a pack wolf still which is odd. I wonder why they are in the army. I open the entrance to the tent and look around. It is a sleeping quarters with two people inside. One werewolf, one human.
"Can we talk?" I direct my question at the wolf, "Alone," I say to the human.
"Yes Lieutenant," the human says and leaves the tent.
I enter fully into the tent with Tobias behind me, "What's a pack wolf doing in the army?" Tobias asks.
"I am taking a break from pack life before going back to be Beta. I have always wanted to join the army," the man responds.
"We are going to need your help," I speak up.
"With what?"
"There has been increasing rogue attacks on soldiers and their next attack will be at this base."
He looks shocked, "Why would they attack an army base?"
"No idea, but we have to work together to save as many people as possible," I reply.
The man nods and holds out a hand, "Xander Roberts."
Tobias shake his hand, "Tobias Branch."
Xander nods and hold his hand out to me and I shake it, "Noctis Kilo."
He looks confused for a moment before asking, "Noctis, where have I heard that name before?" There is a silence before he gasps, "Do you know a Brae Kingston?"
"How do you know Brae?" I ask defensively.
"My dad, she saved him a while back. He always told me stories about her and her wolf Noctis."
"What's your dad's name?" I ask, curious as to who this guy is.
"My dad is Chris Roberts."
I am completely shocked. I haven't seen Uncle Chris in years and now here I stand in front of his kid. I wonder how he has a kid that is the same age as me.
"I'm guessing you knew him," Xander points out.
"Yeah, I did. He was like an uncle to me. How are you his kid, I mean he didn't have a kid when I knew him."
"I was adopted. Who are your parents?"
"Riggs and Hadley."
"As in the Alpha King?!" Xander asks sounding surprised.
"Yeah, I left though as you can probably tell."
"I did hear that his daughter was taken. They all think you are dead since they don't feel your bond anymore."
"I guess that is for the best. I was like a prisoner there."
"Sorry to hear that. I won't mention it to anyone."
"Thanks. If we ever go back home, I would love to see Uncle Chris again. That is if you wouldn't mind."
"Of course not! You are practically family."
Our little reunion is cut short by the sound of the base alarm. The attack has begun. I didn't think they would attack so soon after the last one. The three of us run out of the tent to see the entire base surrounded my wolves.
We all jump right into action, killing wolves left and right. There has to be at least a hundred rogues here, probably more. I try to make it to soldiers before they are killed, but we have already lost so many good men and women. I get an idea and go to the closest soldier.
"Run to the armoury and grab as many guns as you can and start handing them out. It will slow them down. Aim for the head."
The soldier nods and runs in the direction of the armoury. I tell three more soldiers the same thing and they head off in the same direction. A wolf tackles me from behind and scratches my back open. I throw him off of me and stand up.
"Son of a bitch. Come on man, I really liked this shirt," I pout before grabbing the terrified wolf in a headlock and I hear the satisfying snap of his neck.
This continues on for a few more minutes before gun shots ring throughout the field. Slowly, more rogues fall to the ground dead. I see rogues retreating and I take that as a good sign. I look to see soldiers carrying the injured to the hospital. We have quite a few dead on our side, but more rogues are dead than us.
I turn to see Tobias and Xander closer to the tree line and I go to walk over to them. As I take my first step in their direction, an explosion rings through my ears. I fall to the ground as pain radiates throughout my entire body. I feel myself slipping as the darkness consumes me.
