Chapter 1
The only sound that was echoing through the polished marble halls were the clicking of forks on the clean dinner plates. Brin stared at the ceiling. She never really noticed how shiny and beautiful the chandelier hovering above their table was. But then again, she never really took notice on anything she had. The butlers lining every room and hallway in the house, the maids who kept a duster everywhere they went, the chef who prepared every meal, or the assistant never staying more than a couple of metres away. She shovelled a steak in her mouth and proceeded to chew. Immediately, Emma, Brin's assistant whom Brin never quite knew the name of, dabbed a satin cloth imported from Asia on Brin's cheek.
This was very hard to do, especially when she was carrying Brin's personal Golden Retriever puppy in the other hand. Mutt, which was the name of the puppy despite the fact that it never had a mixed breed mom or dad, yipped mainly because Emma was holding Mutt so tightly she may have just stuck him in a guillotine. She then set him on the floor for him to calm down. Rapidly, he scampered out of the room. As he left, two butlers grabbed a mop each and began to clean the floor. Brin left the table, not even bothering to put her plate away or tuck in her chair. In less than ten seconds, her part of the table was spotless as if she was never there. Her father cleared his throat to let Brin know she forgot something. She got the message and twirled on one heel.
"It was a pleasure eating with everyone at this table. Thank you." She said politely and twirled once again to continue down the hall. She proceeded up the stairs with Emma only inches behind her. The splashing of rain water on the windows became much louder as they were on the second floor. She opened her bedroom door only to find Diamond, her older sister Alice's cocker spaniel puppy, and Scraps, her older brother Daniel's Great Dane puppy, on her bed with Mutt ripping up her magazines, chewing on her Greyson Gonzales signed poster, and playing tug of war with her toothbrush. She glared at Emma whom was already blowing the dog whistle. All of them whimpered sadly, including Mutt whom was only trying to have fun and had no idea that chewing on things in this room were forbidden.
"Next time, try locking the door." Brin said through gritted teeth. Emma nodded her head. Emma already knew that locking the door from the inside will only make it impossible to get inside and also knew that is was a very hare- brained idea to do this. But she remembered on how much trouble she might get in if she did do this and how much more trouble she would be in if she didn't do it.
"Right away, Miss Breyer." Emma replied.
"And sign them up for obedience training." Brin said.
"We already have, Miss Breyer."
"When?"
"Two weeks ago, Miss Breyer."
"Then how come they haven't learned anything? Just last week I commanded Mutt to sit and he didn't listen."
"Because you haven't been taking them to their classes, Miss Breyer."
Brin turned around to face Emma. " Do you honestly think that it's my job to take care of them? Do you honestly think that the lady who picks up their poop shouldn't be taking them to their classes?" Brin said with enough fake kindness Barbie would have been jealous.
Brin had just crossed the line. Emma was the one who did the dirty work for Brin, Alice, Daniel, the dogs, everyone in the family basically. Emma then took a deep breath.
"However, your father instructed you to take care of them and take them to their classes, Miss Breyer." Emma said, nearly ready to explode with anger with the four words she had never heard the entire seventeen years she had worked here: please and thank you. Never any gratitude had escaped the Breyer family's mouths for any of the people that have worked here. Emma had originally thought this was only for helping out on taking care of Daniel, when he was an only child, and not even for more than a few months. Unfortunately, she misread the fine print that said it was only for seventeen months but in reality it was seventeen years.
"But I've been completely swamped with Pilates and school work and and-" Brin complained and then stopped her self. School had ended at least two days ago and all she had to do over the summer was write a two page book report on a book of her choice. The choice Brin originally wanted to choose was a magazine but her teacher asked her to pick "A book on fine literature." The first book that came to mind was Harry Potter, a series only she and Mutt read together. But she already knew that her classmates and family members, including her parents, would mock her for her choice of literature. Alice's choice was "Tacos and Tiaras" the book version of a Spanish soap opera she, her mother, and Brin watch together every week and Daniel's choice was "Driving for dummies" which was a book he desperately needed since his drivers test was this fall. Brin hadn't even wrote a single letter on her blank paper let alone choosing her book yet.
"Is that so, Miss Breyer?" Emma questioned, already knowing the answer.
"Quite."
"Then how come when I was cleaning through your desk yesterday, I found your book report blank, Miss Breyer?"
"Mutt ate my homework."
Mutt stared at Brin, with his head cocked to the side.
"Very original answer, Miss Breyer. Please work on your book report, Miss Breyer."
Emma grabbed the puppies and exited the room. I am definitely not sleeping in here, Brin thought. She looked disgusted at her wooden desk, her canopy bed, window seat, walk in closet, and soft carpet that tickled her toes. A butler wearing a hazmat suit then knocked on her door and opened it. He brought in a cart with many cleaning supplies and then faced Brin.
"Miss Breyer, I do not think you would like to see this." He said, plugging in the vacuum cord.
Brin exited the room. Feeling extremely bored, she decided to take a quick peek in Emma's room which was literally labeled "The assistant's room." She opened the door slightly and watched. Emma was flipping through papers, either drawing big X's on them or stamping them with The Breyer family crest that went back for hundreds of years on her father's Scottish side of the family. Brin was about to ask one of the butler's to tie on her skates and go to the indoor skating rink next to the puppy quarters until she saw Emma do neither of the things she normally does: frown, X the paper, or stamp it. She squealed with excitement and grabbed the paper. She was racing to the doorway before Brin even registered the fact that she should probably leave. She opened the doorway, knocking Brin on the floor.
"I thought you were doing your book report, Miss Breyer." Emma said, barely shocked to see Brin not doing what she was supposed to.
"Just stretching my legs." Brin fibbed. She stood up then bent over to touch her toes.
"Ow!" She exclaimed. She had no interest in becoming a doctor- the blood, THE BlOOD!- but she knew that she perhaps broke her ankle.
Emma only called the butler then shoved her past. Brin was so shocked to see this. What was that paper? A butler handed her an ice pack and wrapped a bandage around her ankle. She looked like she was part mummy. She took some spare crutches the butler handed her that Daniel used when he broke his ankle while playing soccer. She hoisted herself up and tried going down the stairs. The butler was chasing after her, trying to prevent her into putting more effort on that ankle.
She sat on a couch in the living room next to her Mom. "What happened?" She asked.
Before Brin could answer, Emma stood at the front of the room with a frown. Brin looked around. All of her family was here. Alice tucked her curly brown hair behind her ear and and looked at Emma.
"I have some devastating news for us, Mr And Mrs Breyer." Emma said, not wanting them to see the smile she was about to show, she looked at the marble floor.
"I-
