What is family?
By popular demand, here's my second SWR fanfic! I'm so glade that everyone is enjoying theses stories 😊
Tacking place long after the events of braking barriers, Ezra's found out the truth about the faith of his parents. He wonders if he can ever feel complete again, so Kanan decides to show him that he still has a family, and that he's still connected to his parents through the force.
For the longest time, Ezra's family had been his parents. Then, they were separated. He always imagined the ghost ship as a temporary shelter, a place he would eventually leave to live with his parents, but now they were gone. He could never go back home.
The ghost felt smaller as he laid down on his bed. He'd already accepted the truth about his parents, but he wondered where to go from there. If they were gone, he had no family left. He was alone.
Suddenly, the door to his room opened, and Kanan entered.
"Ezra?" He said. "Do you need some company?"
Ezra had been alone for a few days now, refusing to speak to anyone. He decided that he was ready to talk.
"Yeah." He said.
Ezra sat up, and Kanan took a set next to him.
"So, what's been going on in that head of yours?"
"Lots of things," Ezra responded. "I'd been away from them for so long, but now it just felt like I'd lost them for the first time. I have no more family."
Kanan took his hand and put it on Ezra's shoulder.
"Ezra, what is family?" He asked.
"What is family? For me it's always been my parents."
"Ezra, your parents and you had a bound that was unbreakable, and it still isn't broken. And I can tell you that family is so much more than the people you're related to."
Ezra looked up to his master. "Okay than, what's family to you?"
Kanan looked down at his padawan and smiled. "Family is the ones who drive you crazy."
Ezra gave a small laugh. "Like Zeb and Chopper?"
"Exactly. And there also the ones you can't live without. They love, protect, and are always there for you. There the ones you would give your life for, because you know they'd do the same thing for you."
Ezra couldn't help but think of all the times him and the crew had gotten into trouble, and how they would all do their best to protect him as he did his best to protect them. He'd shielded them from enemy fire, they covered him. He fought with them, they'd fought back. He'd cried, they'd comforted him. Kanan, Hera, Sebien, Zeb, even Chopper. He'd die fighting for them, and he knew they'd do the same.
Ezra smiled at Kanan with tears in his eyes. He suddenly hugged the man that he knew was his family. After Kanan recovered from his initial shock, he embraced his padawan.
Ezra finally let go and dried his tears.
"You know," he said to his master. "You must be family. You drive me crazy too much and too often to not be."
Kanan smiled at his padawan's cheeky comment, now knowing he was feeling a little better. "Oh, so I drive you crazy, do I?" He started creeping towards Ezra with outstretched hands and wiggling fingers. "Well let's see if I can make you go insane!"
He pinned Ezra down using the force, and started tickling his sensitive sides.
"AHAH Kanahahan! IM SORRY!" He pleaded.
"To late Ezra!" He responded. "You've awaken the tickle monster!"
Ezra's arms suddenly shot above his head as Kanan switched techniques. He started spidering his fingers over Ezra's under arms, an especially bad spot.
"AHAHAHAH, KANAN! NOHOHOHO FAIR!"
"It's fair enough, you drive me crazy too."
As Ezra let out a squeal, Kanan couldn't contain his joy and started laughing with him. Their laughter harmonized in the empty room, and suddenly their minds were once again connected through the force.
Ezra started seeing visions of Kanan during the clone wars, laughing with fellow soldiers. The vision constantly changed as new people appeared and some disappeared. Then he saw a vision of him and Hera together on the ghost, still happy as they could be. As he saw this, Kanan saw visions of Ezra laughing at his fathers funny faces and giggling when his mother tickles him when he was young. The vision changed to an image of him laughing at Zeb, and then getting chased by him. That two changed into an image of the whole ghost crew around the table laughing.
As fast as they'd started, the visions went away, and Kanan and Ezra were left breathlessly laughing together.
"It happened again." Said Ezra when he got his breath back. He looked up at the ceiling in awe. "I felt my parents again."
Kanan only smiled as he was still struggling to stop laughing, and Ezra just smiled up at his master.
"Kanan, all those people." He said when Kanan was finally breathing right again. Kanan slowly sat back up and offered Ezra a hand. He took it, and Kanan pulled him back up.
"I've had lots of family over the years, Ezra. Many lost, but many gained." He smiled again and pulled Ezra into a hug. "Now, you're one of the ones I've gained. And I don't plan on losing you any time soon."
Ezra embraced his master tighter, a big smile on his face, and the two stayed like that until Hera called them to talk about their next mission.
Ezra now knew that he still had family, and that he would always have family. Not only that, but the force would always bind them together, both now and after death. His parents might be gone, but he knew they were still with him. Nothing would change that.
