Chapter 1 - Curse Those Rotten Reporters (Anxiety)

"Come on. Please!" Thomas was practically begging at my feet. I continued to refuse his requests though.

"I told you. I shouldn't. We aren't supposed to do things like this. Our worlds are not supposed to mix." I explained for what felt like the hundredth time.

"Yet, you come in mine all the time." Thomas pointed out.

"Yeah, but..."

"But nothing. Take me with you!" So here I was, dealing with a begging Thomas on a Friday afternoon. The others were out in the mindspace. Logic and Morality were out shopping and lord help us if Morality magically convinces Logic to get a dog. There's no room for a pet in the common building, which is where we live. Prince is out with Misleading Compliment, Pranks, and the children that follow dad around sometimes. I think he said something about his television set being broken and wishing to upgrade it for optimal Disney watching or something of that nature. I honestly don't care.

That leaves me alone with Thomas in the outside world. Currently, the man child was begging me to show him the mindspace. If the others were here they'd probably all be against the idea. If Thomas were to get hurt or something, he would never be the same when he emerged from our world. Yet no matter how many times I had explained this to him, he still refused to give up on asking me to take him inside our world. Finally, I gave in. If the others found out they would cringe and yell at me for doing this, but Thomas had broke me down.

"Fine. But if we go in there and see even a hint of any of the others, we're leaving, got that?" I asked, rubbing my forehead in irritation.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you Anxiety!" Thomas pulled me in for a hug, which I only lingered in for a moment before I used a large amount of my energy to pull us through to the mindspace.

The mindspace is like a city inside Thomas's mind that looks like a location that is a cross between New York and Florida. It's wide and open and filled with screens and brand names. I nervously glanced around, hoping not to be caught by the others. Thomas's eyes are bulging as he looked around, observing our home in the same way that a child inspects a puppy shelter or candy store. I start walking and he follows behind. At the edge of the mindspace, there is a ice cream parlor, retro theme and everything. Disney is blasting through the radio and the place looks abandoned. Yet it's still bright in an almost surreal way. I go to the counter and glance at Thomas before I turn back to order.

"A fudge sundae and a root beer." I nearly catch myself smiling as Thomas watches the robotic arms come out of the counter itself and scoop our orders. The left hand gives me the sundae and the right hands him his float. We sit in the quaint little shop until Thomas starts to ask more questions.

"So, that was totally awesome! Do you guys all have hangouts around the city then? Or do you just go random places? Where do you guys live? Can you show me? Can you show me places the ohers like to hang out too?" A frown overtook my smile. Show him? Our places? I didn't know where a lot of the others hang out on their own time and all my places are meant for me alone. But I ought to show him something if I brought him all the way into here. Where to take him. I pondered before it came to me. The upper city.

The city itself only has one floor to all the others. But that's only because they don't know the fun way to travel. The upper city is the ceiling. It's all the building's roofs combined into a long stretch where I'm free to run alone. Only problem is that we'd have to cut to the ground at the park which was rather large, to get to the common building. It'd be best to take him home once we reached the building.

"We all have places we enjoy but I don't feel like showing you all of them, so we'll just see a few okay?" I asked, he nodded, getting up to throw away his cup and my empty ice cream dish. When his back was turned I continued, "We're going to see the upper city. I'm the only one who knows about it, but it's super fun. Then we'll see the park on our way to the common building, where me and the others live inside your mind." Thomas perked up and pulled me towards the door. We slipped out and I helped him climb a ladder on the side of the building. Just as I got a couple feet off the ground the bell on the front of the ice-cream parlor rang and a chorus of children's song could be heard. Led by the one and only Prince.

"I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts..." the kids laughed as they followed him inside. I pulled myself onto the rooftop quickly so the others were less likely to catch us and see us. We ran over the rooftops. Thomas taking extra moments to glance around at everything in wonder. Me glancing at him to help him along. Finally we made it to the edge of the buildings.

"So how do we get down?" Thomas asked.

"Since you're new I'll give you an option. You can either get pushed or jump." I smirked at the look on his face. He backed up to stand on the ledge, trying to glance over it to see what was below. Before he could make up his mind about what to do, I pushed him over and he gasped. Without another thought, I jumped following his example and landing on a soft pile of pillows.

"Why on earth is there a stack of pillows in the middle of nowhere?" Thomas asked.

"Nobody really knows why they're out here. But the biggest theory is that they were overflow pillows from 'Snuggle Stuff'." I shrugged, gesturing the large building behind us. The walls were made of yellow bricks and had a large blue sign with that name printed on it in large puffy bubble letters. I pulled him out of the pillows and we began to walk through the park. The world was normally rather sunny, but because of all the time he had been spending with me, the moment we walked into the park the weather changed. It began to rain hard, thunder and lightning appearing everywhere. We raced through the park until we reached the sidewalk across the street, in front of the common building.

"I thought you said we were going to the common building?! That is not common." Thomas shouted over to me as the wind whipped around us. I glanced up at it.

"It's common for in here." I shouted back. True the building had trees, birds, calculations, darkness, and puppy pictures scattered throughout it's walls and foundation, but it was still among the more normal things here in this world. Thomas started walking across the street in awe and amazement. He didn't see it coming.

I'm kind of surprised I saw it coming.

My heart was beating quickly in my ears as I dashed out and pushed him onto the sidewalk away from the news van. Stupid reporters, in our world they'll do anything for a story. Even hit a person when they try to cross the street. I reached out my hand and concentrated, sending Thomas back before my world went dark.

*Gold star to anyone who knows the coconuts reference!*
