Chapter 3. ANNIE
I woke up to the sound of fighting.
"Why didn't you tell me you kissed my sister?" Caleb yelled.
"I was gonna tell you this morning, Caleb, I swear—"
"Well then why didn't you mention it?!" Caleb shot back.
"Because you just woke up and I didn't want to ruin your day!" Brennan explained. "And how do you know Annie and I kissed?"
I was about to get up, but I decided to pretend to be asleep so I could hear this.
"Dude, I was sitting behind you during the whole movie. Do you think I didn't see it?" Caleb said.
"Well, you got me there." Brennan agreed. "But listen, Caleb; Annie and I aren't dating and we won't date. She sees me as a second brother, and I don't think she likes me the way I like her. I was the one to kiss her, and she only kissed back to be polite and not hurt my feelings because she's a nice girl. I'm sorry that I hurt her, Caleb, trying to force her to like me. If you want, we don't have to be friends anymore, because you probably hate me." Brennan sighed and I could hear him start to walk away.
"Brennan, wait!" Caleb called out.
"Yeah?" Brennan asked.
Caleb walked over. "I'm sorry, I overreacted. I guess I'm just an overprotective big brother. I just want Annie to be happy, and you too, because you're my friend. Our friendship isn't gonna end over this, okay?"
I opened my eyes to see Brennan nod and grin. "Thanks, Caleb. You're a good brother and friend."
They did a bro hug and then I saw Brennan look in my direction. "She's awake!"
Everyone crowded around me as if I just came back to life. "Ern...good morning, everyone." I pretended to yawn like I just woke up.
"Nice one, Annie. I know you heard the whole thing." Caleb said. Gosh, he knows me so well, he knows when I fake yawn.
"Y-you did?" Brennan asked a little nervously.
I nodded. "Yeah. Brennan, that was actually really kind of you to say that we could end the friendship. I mean, I'd hate it if we did, but you didn't have to do that. Thanks." I hugged him and felt teensy tiny sparks, and butterflies.
"Kids! Breakfast!" Mommy called from upstairs.
"Coming!" Hayley shouted. Everyone shuffled out of the room.
Before I could leave, Brennan stopped me. "Can we talk?"
"Okay." I said. Brennan took my hand and led me towards the couch.
We sat next to each other, still holding hands. Brennan took a deep breath and said, "Annie, I'm gonna ask again; do you like me?"
I nodded immediately. "Yes. After our kiss I knew that I liked you. But we can't be together."
Brennan's smile faded into a frown. I knew I had just broken his heart. He dropped his hand from mine and placed it on his lap. "Oh."
"I wish we could, but Brennan, I see you as a brother. You're so kind and nice to me and treat me like a sister. I love you for that. I don't know if I love you the other way...
It'd be hard for me to just change my mind in an instant. But, for your sake, I'll think about it—"
"Don't, Annie." Brennan stood up. "I don't want to put pressure on you. You can forget it; I'll get over you."
"Really?" I asked.
He nodded and looked away. I saw a small, single tear roll down his cheek.
I got up and hugged him. "Thank you so much, Brennan. And this is why I see you as a brother; you don't want to hurt me." I then walked upstairs to eat some breakfast.
•••
About two hours later, we were all outside and playing on the trampoline.
Katie, Hayley, and I all practiced some gymnastics. Caleb tried, too, but failed miserably.
"Hey, we're bored watching you guys. We're gonna go swim in the lake instead." Caleb told us as he went inside the house.
"Okay!" Katie yelled back as she did a round off backhand spring.
A few minutes later the boys ran through the backyard and jumped off the dock and into the lake.
I laughed and walked towards them with Katie and Hayley behind me.
Brennan grinned. "Wanna join us?"
"Nah, I'm good—" before I could finish my sentence, Brennan grabbed my ankle and pulled me into the lake.
I screamed as I fell in. When I got up to the surface, Brennan, Caleb, and Ryan were all laughing.
"That wasn't cool, Brennan." I climbed out of the lake, then Katie handed me one of the towels the boys had left.
"Yeah, Brennan! That wasn't cool at all. You okay, Annie?" Katie said.
I nodded. "Yeah, just cold and wet now."
Brennan climbed out of the lake and had an apologetic look on his face. "Sorry, Annie. I was only trying to be funny."
"Yeah, well I didn't think it was funny." I snapped.
Brennan looked down at his feet.
"I gotta go shower and change." I mumbled as I stomped away.
I went up to my room and when I opened the door, Mommy was in there putting away my clothes.
"Hey, An...what happened?" She asked as she walked over.
"Brennan pulled me into the lake."
"Why?"
"He said he was just trying to be funny."
"Ooh." Mommy cooed.
"Huh?"
"When a boy tries to be 'funny' around you, it means he likes you." Mommy said.
I laughed. "Brennan doesn't like me." I lied.
"I think he does, Annie. We'll talk about this later, go shower. I gotta put away your clothes." Mommy said.
I nodded and grabbed a fresh pair of clothes. I quickly showered and got dressed and went downstairs.
Everyone was at the table eating chips. Brennan saw me first and came over with a towel wrapped around his shoulders. I couldn't help but notice his bare chest...
"Annie, I'm really sorry—"
I interrupted him with a hug. He was dry, so it wasn't like I was getting wet again. Then I pulled away.
"No, I'm sorry. I overreacted. I get it, you were just trying to be funny and cool." I said.
"Thank you, Annie." Brennan smiled then sat back down.
I sat next to Katie just as Mommy walked in with her camera.
"Oh, I see we helped ourselves to a snack."
"Yeah, because you weren't here." Caleb said as he poured himself a drink.
"So, Caleb's practice is in less than an hour, so are we going or nah?"
"Mommy, don't say 'nah'. It just sounds wrong coming from you." I said.
Everyone laughed. "Well, excuse me." Mommy said.
"Yeah, we're going." Hayley answered.
"Okay, so we're gonna take the bigger car. Once everyone finishes eating and gets dressed, we'll go." Mommy then turns off the camera and walks out of the room.
When we finish, Caleb and the boys get dressed into their clothes (Caleb in his practice clothes, the other boys in casual clothes) and we leave when Mommy comes back.
On the way there, Hayley, Katie, and I do musical.lys and post funny pictures using Snapchat filters.
When we arrived, Caleb jogged over to his friends and we sit in the bleachers.
"Mommy it's hot, can Katie and I go to the shade?" I whined a half hour later.
"Sure, just stay nearby." Mommy said as Katie and I walked away and sat under a tree.
"We need to talk." We both said at the same time.
"You go first." I insisted.
"I still like Caleb, but I'm scared to talk to him, and if we date we'd ruin all of our friendships—"
"That's exactly what I was going to say!" I interrupted. "Except about Brennan..."
"Spill."
"I really like Brennan, and after our kiss that's when I realized my feelings for him. But I can't date him because it'd ruin our friendship, and plus I think of him as a brother." I explained.
Katie nodded. "Same here."
We sat in silence for what felt like a century until Katie suggested, "Let's go get some food."
We went over to Mommy and got out some granola bars from her cooler when we saw Ms. Jill coming towards us with her camera.
"And here they are! It's been a quiet day without my kids!" Ms. Jill hugged my mom and then hugged her kids.
"So what's going on? Anything juicy to tell our viewers?" Ms. Jill asked.
I got nervous. How does she know? I look over at Brennan and he looks over at me. We quickly looked away from each other and said, "Nothing!" At the same time.
"Okay." Ms. Jill said in a suspicious tone. She filmed a bit of Caleb's practice until it ended a few minutes later.
Caleb came over and hugged Ms. Jill.
Later on, Katie and I hugged each other good bye.
"I'll see you at gym tomorrow." She said. "We'll talk some more there."
I nodded and climbed into the car.
"Bye guys! Thanks for having them!" Ms. Jill cried as she pulled out of the parking lot.
"No problem! Here, take the camera so I can drive." Mommy said as she handed the camera to Caleb next to her.
"Okay, hey guys. I just got done with baseball practice and said bye to Brennan, Ryan, and Katie. It was a good practice, though..."
Caleb went on to explain his practice, but all I could think about was Brennan. I really liked him, but it'd be like dating my brother...ew.
I set aside the thought as Caleb handed me the camera.
"Hi guys, so as you know, Katie and I had a sleepov—" just then, I got a text. I looked to see that it was from Katie.
"Oh, just got a text! Hayley, take it away!" I handed the camera to Hayley as I checked the text.
K- wanna sleepover tomorrow after practice? We need more time to talk
K- btw this is Brennan
Brennan?
A- y didn't u txt me on ur phone?
K- because if someone saw my name pop up they may get suspicious
A- true I guess
A- I just asked my mom, I can sleepover
K- gr8! I'll see u after practice tomorrow then
A- okay! But isn't Katie gonna know you're using her phone?
K- she's in the shower rn and I'm gonna delete these texts. The water just shut off gtg bye
A- bye!
I turned off my phone just as we reached the driveway.
I got inside and quickly did school, and when I was finished it was 11:45 PM.
I sighed and put away my school stuff, changed into pajamas, did the QOTD, then went to bed.
It was hard to fall asleep, because I could only think of Brennan and his texts.
Why would he ask me to sleepover just so we could talk? I don't know, but I'll find out tomorrow.
A/N: Hello! What a long chapter oOps. Anyways I hope you're liking this so far, and I hope I'm not moving too fast. But I've got a plan...heh heh.
I'm on a roll, so I'll probably write another chapter tonight!
