TWENTY-ONE

Presently...

Bloom was done reading all the letters she found in the box. She was smiling as she traced his handwriting with her fingertips. His words were so pure and sweet in every letter she read and it made her question if it was written by the same person.

The smile slipped from her lips when she realized, she still couldn't remember anything. Her memory of him was still blank after reading his letters, she couldn't recall anything from what he wrote. She wished she did, they seemed like a memory she would never forget.

She closed her eyes and tried to remember something about him, anything even a glimpse into her childhood but got nothing. She groaned in frustration and laid on the bed staring at her window like it had the answers to all her questions.

"Why can't I remember anything if all this is real? Is this normal?"
She whispered softly to herself and hugged her pillow to her chest.

Maybe Zayn was right, she didn't know who she was. It made her question herself if she was the same girl that wrote those letters he showed her.

She stared at the bracelet around her wrist, the one she found in the box. She felt it didn't belong to her, she removed it and threw it inside the box and broke down.

She didn't want to lose him, she loved him so much. He showed her places she thought she'd never see, he made her experience different emotions for the first time and crave for things she never wanted, things she thought were useless.

She didn't know who dropped the box on her bed but why drop this now? Did the person know about her and Zayn?

Her head was aching from the whole thinking clouding her brain and depleting the sanity she was trying to save. She closed her eyes and tried to catch some sleep.

There was a loud knock on her door that woke her up, she sat up and winced at the slight pain in her head.

"Dollface?" Damian called.

"Come in."
Bloom said tiredly and leaned back on the headboard.

Damian opened the door and walked in with her favorite pudding.

"Guess what I have here?" He asked with a grin pulling at his thin lips.

"I'm not feeling too well, " she told him in a low tone not looking his way.

"Should I call for Dr. Lana or get you some painkillers?"
He looked alarmed all of sudden.

"Painkillers will do."
She said with a low groan, massaging her temples slowly with her fingers.

Damian left and returned a few minutes later with the pills. She took it and laid back on the bed.

There was a long silence as he sat next to her on the bed looking worried.

"I brought your favorite pudding."
He said to her with a soft smile.

"I will take it later."
She told him with her eyes closed.

"Is everything okay?" he asked but got no reply.

"You look more miserable each day, I'm really worried. It's like I don't who you are anymore, a lot has changed since you started sneaking out and I'm sorry to say but I regret letting you out."

She was quiet. She sat up slowly and pushed the box his way.

"I found this in my room when I came back, do you know who dropped it here?"

She asked ignoring what he just said. She studied the expression on his face as he stared at the box with a straight face.

"Umm..no, I don't."
He pushed it back to her.

"Do I have a twin?"
She suddenly asked.

"What?" he laughed briefly. He ceased his laughter when he realized how serious she was.

"No? You're not a twin. You're the only child of your parents."

"You've known me since I was a kid, did we visit any neighborhood after my dad won the election?"

"No."
He told her.

She sighed in frustration and buried her face in her palms.

"What's wrong, Dollface?" He asked placing a hand on her leg.

"It's complicated."
She said putting the box aside. She didn't want anyone to know about Zayn. She was not ready to let go, she was still holding on to the hope he would come back to her and things would return to how they used to be.

"Can I help?" he asked taking her hand she just dropped on her lap.

"Yeah, you could ask around and find out who left this box here."

"Okay, but what's so important about the box?"
He asked, gesturing at the object with his chin.

"Just ask around please, I need to rest my head."
She gave him a small smile and laid back on the bed.

He stood up with the pudding and left the room.

She released a loud breath and stared at the window, maybe she had a twin, maybe she wasn't the same girl he wrote to?

He told her she didn't know who she was. Was it possible there was more about her life, she knew nothing about?

She couldn't remember much from her childhood. Everything in his letters was new to her. What happened? Why couldn't she remember if it was a few years ago?

She dug her nails into her pillow as the tears forced their way out. She was mad at herself for no logical reason.

Zayn's face creased in anger as he shot the three mannequins in the chest not missing any. His lean fingers held the gun in a firm grip and his emotions pulled the trigger.

It was almost midnight but he didn't feel like leaving the Anti-sam hideout.
The shooting range was empty and quiet, just like he wanted. He hissed when he ran out of bullets.

"Finally, I was wondering when you're going to stop."
Taylor said from behind him.

"Are you stalking me now?"
Zayn said tossing the headset and handgun aside, he grabbed his remaining beer and took a sip.

"You wish," Taylor scoffed taking a seat.

"Did Rosa send you?"

"No, I was bored," Taylor said as he played with the big rings around his fingers.

Zayn took the seat in front of Taylor, he took off his black baseball cap and brushed his dark hair back to tame the unruly ends.

"She is really messing you up." Taylor teased.

Zayn gave him a dark look but Taylor smirked.

"We all miss her, not everyone remembers something from their childhood, bro."

"She was twelve," Zayn grunted.

"Okay, maybe something happened. Don't you find it strange?"

"No, " Zayn replied, standing up.

"If you are here to talk about her, you know the way out."
He checked for another gun.

"If you love her, you'll want to find out what happened. Maybe that asshole did something to her, maybe there's another reason he's hiding her from the whole world. You're a smart guy Zayn and you know something is not right. Hurry before it's too late."
Taylor said and left.

Zayn stopped his search and leaned on the wall. He still had the letter where she mentioned something suspicious about her dad, she was going to explain in her next letter but it never came.

He squeezed the empty beer can and threw it into the trash can. He grabbed his jacket and his phone and left the room.

Zayn kept his eyes on the surveillance camera as he pressed his body to the tall wall, he made his move once the camera turned away from him.

He climbed the building with ease until he got to the window to her room. He was relieved to find her window open.

He stared at her sleeping frame on the bed. She was sleeping sideways on the bed. She held the pillow where her head was resting.

He walked to the bed and squatted where her head was, he brushed her hair back softly.
He wiped the dried tears away and caressed her cheek with his thumb. Her eyes looked puffy from her tears.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

"Sorry I have been a coward, " he chuckled softly at himself.

He couldn't stay away from her, she was like a magnet pulling him from even the longest distance. The voice at the back of his head kept warning him to let her go because they were never going to work.

As much as he wanted revenge on her father, his feelings for her seemed to be dissolving his vicious intentions for her father.

His thumb traced her lips softly, he was dying to kiss her. It's been so long since he tasted her sweet lips, he was obsessed with everything about her and there was no escape.

"You drive me crazy, Bloom Nolan and you have no fucking idea."
He whispered.

He docked immediately the door opened. He heard light footsteps entering the room, it stopped.

"Did it work?" An intense deep voice asked.
He knew that voice, his fists clenched. Anger consumed him slowly, his self-control was hanging on a thin rope.

"Yes, she saw the letters but she doesn't remember."

"Good, get rid of those stupid letters before she wakes up."
The president ordered and Zayn listened to the footsteps retreating the room.

It took everything in him not to pop out of where he was hiding and beat the life out of him, beat him till he was begging with his last breath. How great it would feel to ram his fist into the asshole's face to the point no one would recognize him.

His anger increased tenfolds when he turned to look at her.

They did something to his sunflower, it made him more furious. Taylor was right, her father did something to her.

He stood up and pulled the comforter up to her body. He placed a kiss on her head and smiled at her.

He looked around for the letters, he found the box and walked to her closet to hide it.
He read some of the letters before hiding the box behind a shoebox. He cursed at how cheesy his letters were as he walked into the room but it wasn't his fault, he was lovestruck.

He moved to the bed and stared at her for a while.

"Bye, sunflower."
He whispered softly and walked to the window.

Bloom woke up when she heard the knock on her door. She grumbled before opening her eyes.

"Dollface, are you awake?" Damian asked with another knock.

"Yes," she replied hoarsely as she sat up, she brushed her dark locks back and took a glance at the sun outside her window.

A familiar scent hit her nose, she sniffed the air around her like a hound who just sensed his prey from far away.

"West?"
She whispered and looked around, she ignored Damian who just walked into her room.

She got down from the bed and walked to the window, she searched for him. She knew he only came at night but she wished he was somewhere around the corner.

His scent was in her room, he came to see her.

"Dollface?"
Damian called getting confused at her behavior.

"He was here, " she mumbled with a smile. "He came," she said loud enough for someone outside to hear. She turned to Damian with a wide smile.

"Are you okay?"

"Yes!" she said chirpily walking to her bathroom.

"Your dad is waiting for you in the dining."

"Okay, I will be there in two minutes."
She said in a delighted tone and shut the door to her bathroom.
He heard her squeal and he knew she was doing one of her disastrous happy dance.

He looked around the room still confused, he shook his head and left the room.

"Wait, you think her dad wiped her memories away?"
Liz asked trying to hold back her laughter after Zayn explained what he heard last night.

Zayn gave her a hard stare and turned to the others at the table.

"Why would he do that to his own daughter?"
Nicole asked after taking a sip from her milkshake.

"I don't know, with everything that asshole has done why should this be a surprise to you guys?" Zayn said sounding upset.

"It doesn't make any sense Zayn, this is reality, not some movie where they wash someone's memories away with some big ass machine."
Tyra said and sighed at the end.

"I don't know what he did but I'm sure he did something to her and I'm going to find out." Zayn said with eagerness.

"You had your chance, he was in the room with you. All you had to do was put twenty bullets in his head. It will save us the trouble."
Tyra said and smiled sweetly at him.

"I really wish I kept this to myself."
Zayn said and looked around the room. He made calculations for every angle in his head and studied people's movement, measuring how long it took a person to take the next step and the angle at which the person raised his foot.

"No, we believe you. That asshole did something to her, I totally believe you."
Nicole said quickly, drawing his attention.

"And if you need help with anything you can count on us."
Taylor said hitting his back playfully.

"So, are you going to get back together? You know, now that you know she's not at fault?"
Liz asked leaning closer to the table.

He gave them a blank look as he chewed the Doritos in his mouth, they waited for him to say something but he stayed mute.

Liz and Nicole sighed in aggravation and glared at him.
He laughed softly and picked his phone.

Bloom sat on her bed wide awake waiting for Zayn to sneak in. It was almost midnight and he hadn't shown up. She knew he came last night and she had a feeling he would come tonight.

She sighed and leaned back on the padded headboard. Her eyelids were getting heavy informing her it was time to sleep.

She fought every ounce of nerve pulling her eyelids down to get her to sleep and stayed up for a few minutes. She gave up after twenty minutes and went to bed.

She woke up the next day and found a note on her nightstand and a wand of sunflower on top of the note, his scent filled her nose.

She sat up and looked around her but he was not in the room. She picked up the sunflower and the note.

It's hard to sit here and be so close to you and not kiss you. Everything is better with you, sunflower. It's weird thinking back to when I first met you and that moment I had no idea you would have such a big impact on me. I have been a mess lately and I know I messed up. I hope you can forgive me for being an asshole.

p.s. I still love you.

She smiled at the letter and stared at the flower. The smile left her face when she realized she still didn't remember what happened a few years ago.

"I'm not your sunflower," she mumbled and put back the letter and the flower where she saw it.

Bloom stared at her pale eyes in the mirror after brushing her teeth. She frowned and rinsed her face again.
She wiped her face and adjusted the hairband to hold her bun in place.

The dinner she had an hour ago was making her stomach act funny. She shuffled back to her room rubbing her stomach, she almost screamed when she saw a figure sitting on her window.

She exhaled in relief and tried to stop the pounding in her chest when she recognized the person.

Zayn stood up and walked toward her with his hands tucked in his front pocket. His eyes raked in what she was wearing, those black shorts always got to him and he tried not to focus on the fact she had no bra beneath that cotton shirt. She was already dressed to go to sleep, he wanted to wait till she was asleep before coming in but he needed to talk to her.

"Hey, " he said softly.

"Hey, " she said back looking at his white Jordan sneakers that went with his black jeans and tie-dye shirt.

"Did I scare you?"
He asked with a small smile.

"A little."
She said in a low tone and forced a smile.

He stopped one foot away from her. She didn't know why he came but the smile on his lips told her he wasn't here to fight.

"Did you get the note I left you?" He asked, thinking of ways to start a conversation without being awkward.

"Yeah," She wasn't his sunflower, she didn't deserve it.
She was fighting the urge to run to his arms and hug him tight like it was her last time seeing him. It felt like years since she was this close to him.

"Bloom?"
He called her as she kept staring at his shoes.

"Yes?" She looked up to meet his eyes.

"I get it, you're still mad at me?"

"Not just that, you broke up with me because I'm not the girl you fell in love with seven years ago and I'm not sure I will ever..."

"I'm sorry." He said quickly, cutting her off. "I was being an idiot, I am really sorry for everything I said that night and how I acted." He stepped closer and took her hand. The warmth radiating from her body welcomed him.

"West...sorry I mean Zayn, it's going to take me some time to get used to that," she told him with a small smile.

"It's fine," he said, shrugging it off.

"Look, I wish I remember what..."

"Shhh." He whispered placing a finger on her lips.

"It doesn't matter, you're still her. I don't care anymore." He admitted.

She was confused at his sudden change of heart. She took a step back leaving some space between them.

"You kicked me out of your life because I don't remember meeting you when we were kids and now you're acting like..."

"I know, I messed up and I'm sorry."
He cut in again.
She stared at him wishing she could see everything going on in his head.

The door suddenly opened, making her heart fly to her tongue.
