twenty-three | dan
"You're where?"
"The police station."
Dan didn't like being woken. Much less by the boy that broke his heart calling him to pick him up from the police station.
Dan didn't have a car, and stealing his parents wasn't a problem. Even though he knew he shouldn't.
But, being the great person he was, he agreed to pick him up.
"Where's your brother?"
"Outta town."
Dan groans and rolled his eyes as he started the car. His brother is out of town for one day and he gets arrested.
"Alright be there in ten."
As Dan rode through the streets he thought of what he would say to him. He wanted to say sorry, but what he really wanted to do right now was yell at him.
How stupid can he be?
How'd he get arrested anyway?
Why wasn't Dan there for him?
He left out a frustrating sound and hit his head against the steering wheel. The sound of the horn brought him back to life and he floored it to the police station.

When he arrived he was asked for his ID, driver's license, and school code.
It was a weird process.
"Why would his brother send a minor to pick him up?" The cop asked him.
Dan shrugged. He didn't know. If he knew Marytn was the one who wanted him here and not Phil he would've ignored his please of help and tell him to handle it like a big boy.
"Well, whatever, he's back there with some other kids."
Dan perked up, and he inched over to the officers desk to ask him. "What'd he look like."
"African american fella, kinda long hair, foul mouth." The officer shrugged like it was an everyday thing.
"Why you asking?"
Dan's blood boiled and he clenched his fist together. How could Phil be so stupid, Dan knew Brian would only get him in trouble.
The cop lead him to the back where to two boys were slunched over a couple of chairs, sharing mid conversation.
"You seriously still sleep with a teddy bear?"
"At least I don't share a room with a seven year old."
"Yeah well at least-"
The cop knocked on the wall and told Phil his ride was here. Phil's expression immediately darkened as be looked over at Dan.
"Call me tomorrow." He told Brian.
"If I'm not dead, I'll consider it."
Phil walked toward and right passed Dan. He didn't seem to want to engage in conversation. He didn't even want Dan to be there. Understandable. He didn't want to be here either.
Phil signed a few papers and wrote Dan his brothers phone number.
"Here's your court date, this'll be decided whether or not you'll have to pay a large fine."
Phil nodded gravely. He looked a little worse for wear. His skin, which used to be a smooth white, had now looked gray. He looked as if he'd been crying all night, his eyes were red as his nose, and his eyes lacked the sparkle they once held.
Phil turned and made eye contact with Dan for a few seconds before turning toward the door.
"Come on."
Dan wanted to make a joke about his lack of words, but this wasn't the time nor the place.

Not even half way through the drive Dan started yelling at Phil.
"Why are you at the police station at ten o'clock at night!"
"Why were you sleeping, it's ten o'clock at night."
Strangely enough Dan wanted to punch Phil. He wanted to strangle him and his new playmate, which brought up another argument in his mind.
"This is why I didn't want you hangout with Brian, this exact reason!" Dan shouted.
"It wasn't even his idea to get the alcohol." Phil stated.
"We broke up two weeks ago, or should I say you broke up with me, why are you going all Bella from Twilight right now!" At this point Dan wasn't even concentrated on the rode, he was busy looking at the nonchalant expression on Phil's face.
"Not everything going wrong in my life has to do with you Daniel."
Dan flinched. That stung. But only for a while, as he watched Phil's expression turned from bored to sullen within seconds. Something was wrong, something that didn't have to do with Dan. Dan wanted to ask him what was wrong, but be just looked out the window, his head buzzing.
"Well, go on then, ask me what's wrong."
"What makes you think I care."
"The fact that you actually shut up for one god damn minute."
Dan almost snorted, but he controlled himself and thought of something to say back. The he stopped himself. Phil was sad, and dazed, and slightly intoxicated. But the words still managed to tumbled out of his mouth.
"You probably already told your new piece of candy anyway."
Phil settled back in his seat, his expression and body sluggish.
"He gets me."
Dan shouted. "And I don't!"
He was so concentrated on Phil and so angry with himself and the stupid boy Phil had chosen to be friends with, he swerved to the other lane. The truck almost hit them straight on but Phil manged to reach over and move them out the way in enough time.
The truck still went on but they stopped in the middle of the road. After the bright head lights of the truck when down the road, they were completely alone.
Dan finally manger the breath to speak. "I thought I got you Phil, we get one another, what could he understand that I couldn't?"
"He doesn't live with his parents."
Dan looked over at Phil guared expression. He never talked about his parents, Dan never asked. It was a cycle. It bothered Dan he didn't know the where abouts of Phil parents.
"He knows what it's like to grown up without parents," Phil's voiced cracked. "In and out the house everyday and finally in jail."
Were Phil's parents in jail?
Phil checked his phone and spoke to Dan in a soft voice. "Could you take me somewhere?"
"Where?"
"It's about an hour drive from here, it's in a different state though."
Phil looked so broken and plain. Like he would vaporate at the touch of Dan's fingers.
"Tell me when to turn."

The car ride was silent beside Phil telling him when to take turns and to watch out for stick and oncoming lambs.
In attempts to start conversation Dan decided to try and put some light on the situation.
"And I thought cows were annoying."
He turned to see Phil crack a small smile.
"Yeah, they really need to moove along."
Dan laughed along with Phil for bit. It felt good to be laughing with him again.
"That was horrible."
Phil sighed. "I know."
Dan noticed Phil's face was beginning to get back it's color. His eyes weren't as sparkly and his lips were still dry, but he looked radiant.
"Dan."
"Hm?"
"I'm sorry."
Dan casted a look over at Phil. He still wouldn't meet his eyes.
"I should've told you sooner, and I shouldn't have casted you out."
Dan sighed. "It's fine."
"No it's not, I was an asshole."
Dan wanted to defend him but frankly Phil was acting like an asshole, and if he'd owed up to it then why should Dan defend him?
"I want something with you." Dan said quitely. "I still love you."
He looked over at Phil and this time Phil looked back.
"We can't." He said softly. "I want something with you too, so bad, but I'm moving, and it hurts, but we can't."
Dan nodded and he touched the necklace that had Phil had the other half of on his neck.
He saw Phil do the same. "We'll always be friends Dan, and I'll always love you."
Tear spilled down Dan cheeks as he nodded and kept his eyes on the rode.
"Okay."

After a hour and a half of driving, they finally arrived at Manchester.
Dan had only been a few times, for his grandmother funeral when he was seven, a couple family visits, and for a field trip.
Phil kept giving him directions and taking sips of coffee he made Dan stop for.
They kept going till they got to a large gated area. It looked like a graveyard. It was a graveyard.
The door slammed as Phil stepped out of the car.
"What time is it?"
Dan checked his phone. "Eleven thirty seven."
Phil sighed and walked into the graveyard.
Dan never liked graveyards, ever since his grandmother died he'd been weary of them. So many people crying, the dead surrounding them, hundreds of unseen humans there with them. It was dark as well, the only think illuminating the graveyard was the ground lights.
Dan turned on his flashlight and followed Phil.
He watched Phil maneuver his way around the grassy plain as if he'd done this many times before.
They stopped at a large gravestone, with two names written on it, and loads of flowers, teddy bears, and chocolates placed at the head of it.
Katherine and Richard Lester
loving parents, spouses, and friends
may their hearts be forever intertwined
"Phil..."
He trailed off as he saw Phil kneel down at the end of the stone.
"I've never had to say anything when I came here, no one expected me too, I don't know what to say."
Dan's heart broke. The way Phil looked at the graves was as if someone had just taken away something from him.
Which was accurate.
"Hi mom, hi Dad," he started. "I assume Marytn came to see you already."
Dan went and sat next to Phil.
"Sarah's gotten so big, I wish she could've met you guys, she looks a lot like you mom."
Dan reached out and took Phil's hand.
"I'm sorry I haven't came to see you guys as much, I've been busy, I've been really happy these last few months."
Tears started inching out of Phil's eyes, like they were just taking a peak to see if it was okay to come out.
"I miss you so much, sometimes I forget how you look, then I feel stupid."
He was full on sobbing now. Tears spilling out like lava out of a volcano.
"It's so unfair, Marytn had you for seventeen years, why'd I only get seven?"
Dan hugged Phil, the raven haired boy buried his face in his neck and sobbed.
"Hi, I'm Dan."
Phil's tears spilled on his neck like rain.
"Your son is amazing, I wish you could see him."
Phil sniffled and perked to hear Dan speak.
"He's so great, and kinds, and pretty, I would hug you if I could, for making such a nice thing."
Phil laughed a bit. "Thing?"
Dan tutted at him. "I'm trying to speak."
Phil went back to letting out small sobs, while still listening to Dan talk.
"I think I'm pretty lucky, he's an idiot but I'm sure that he's own fault."
Phil bit his neck, making Dan yelp.
"He's a little frisky but I'm sure he wouldn't want me telling you that."
Dan sighed and decided to take things seriously.
"I love him, I truly do, even if he's an idiots, which again not your doing, he's made me feel everything all at once, it's funny but it's true."
Phil finally spoke. "I'm sure they would've loved you."
"You'd be like a chip off the old block."

Once they were back in the car after about thirty minutes of crying and almost bursting with laughter.
"You never told me about your parents."
Phil shrugged. "You never asked."
That was true, but even if he never asked didn't mean he wasn't curious.
"What happened?"
Phil sighed and turned his head to look out the window onto the moving road.
"It was cold, the heating was broken, so we had to turn the fire place on, which we'd never done before."
"A fire?" Dan questioned.
"Yeah, a fire."
They went on for a while without speaking, it was almost like it used to be. Silence, expect for the sounds of the car and lambs passing by.
It was nearly two in the morning when they arrived back in London. They went on for a while about how they'd get killed. Both by their brother and parents.
When they arrived at Phil apartment, he turned to Dan.
"Thank you."
"No problem."
"You should get a reward."
Dan's eyes darted to Phil's lips.
"I can think of a few."
Phil snorted and gave Dan a peck on the lips. It was short, but sweet and affective.
"See you tomorrow."
"Hey, if I'm not dead, right?"
Dan smiled as he watched Phil walk up to the apartment.
Things weren't okay now but they would be.
All Dan had to do was keep his hopes high.
Because seeing Phil's eyes sparkle again meant everything to him.
