chapter ten
you're perfectly wrong for me, all the stars in the sky could see - Shawn Mendes, perfectly wrong
-
shawn sunk down onto his own bed. his bed in toronto. his bed in his home. he sat down, reflecting back on the last three weeks of his life. he got his best friend back, but he lost the person who he could tell anything to, and by that, he didn't mean brian. he meant aria.
aria was the girl who he could trust with anything. if he felt sad, he would go to her. if he felt happy, he would go to her. if he felt anxious, he would talk to her. if he wrote a new song, he would sing it to her. if he was nervous, he would hold her. if he was scared, he would kiss her. aria was the sun to his sky, the stars to his midnight, the trees to his land, the lips he craved.
aria was the one who made him realise what love really was. but she was perfectly wrong for him, and he knew that. he knew that brian was right, he knew that no matter what, the two of them weren't right together. no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't get it to be perfect. it was perfectly wrong. they were perfectly wrong for each other.
he stands up once more, walking to his dresser, picking up the framed photograph of aria and him from one of their adventures in barcelona, making him smile softly, remembering that evening minute by minute.
he remembered picking her up, twirling her about as she squealed, the winding streets erupting with their happiness. he remembered watching her get absorbed by the culture. he remembered her dragging him into various little shops. he remembered them getting tipsy on sangria.
how could his friends hate her? how could his friends not support them?
he sighed gently, picking up his jacket, and leaving his room, pulling on his everyday boots, and walking out of the condo. the heartbreak had been driving him crazy.
he walked down the street to the closest coffee shop, the one where the two of them would get coffee in the morning, or their classic matcha tea lattes. the woman who ran it always greeted them with a smile, and got to know the couple well.
"morning jane," shawn says weakly, walking into the practically empty café, which only has a few people alone.
"morning dear, where's the cutie?" she asks, confused at how aria is not with him.
"she won't be coming for a while," shawn says softly, sitting at one of the stools on the bar.
"oh goodness, what happened?" jane asks suddenly, tying up her red hair, and quickly pouring a mug of coffee for shawn.
"we broke up," he answers, his breath shallow. "a-and i don't even know how to feel."
"why did you break up? you guys were perfect," she asks, handing the coffee to shawn, and sitting opposite him.
"we were perfectly wrong, jane," he whispers, taking a long sip of the coffee, the hot liquid burning the back of his throat. "my friends didn't like us together, and she gave into them. she came to japan, to join me on tour, and after three days, she was back on the next flight to toronto. her mum's in hospital, and i know shes completely broken, i can just feel it. i just want to be there for her, but i can't. she wanted to break up so i didn't lose my friendships."
"are they really friendships if they aren't happy for you?" she asks him gently, as he sighs, shrugging. "have you tried to write out your feelings?"
"no, i've been completely numbed to write. i thought i would be able to write loads, but apparently not," he says sadly. "thanks for the coffee jane, how much?"
"its on the house, dear," she says sympathetically. "you know, my husband and i were like you and aria. no one liked us together, but look at us now. and we have an even bigger age difference. age is just a number, you have to remember that, stay true to her."
"how big is your age gap?"
"six years," shawn looks at the woman optimistically. "you can feel if its right to be together, shawn. don't just think you can't because your friends say differently. they don't control you, and they aren't friends if they don't accept your love. it's your choice, not theirs."
"thank you so much jane, i know what i'm going to do," shawn confirms with himself. "i'll see you tomorrow morning, hopefully with aria." he bids her goodbye with a hug, running off, and heading straight back to his condo to pick up his car.
the wind hits his hair, the windows rolled down slightly, creating a breeze in the slightly long drive to see brian. he has to talk to all of his friends today, well, the most important ones, so he told them all to meet in one place. shawn drums his hands against the steering wheel, as daniel caesar's we find love blares through the car speakers, filling his car with music. he decides to change it to john mayer, since the song is getting slightly saddening, and he needs uplifting: instead, still feel like your man plays, and shawn can't help the little smile that escapes his lips. he was going to get aria back, no matter what. he just had to make sure his friends understand that.
"hey guys, thanks for meeting me with this short a notice," shawn begins, standing in brians kitchen, as the boys crowd around, sitting on the bar stools, or leaning against the various counters.
"man, you don't look too good, are you okay?" ian asks, completely and utterly concerned for his best friend.
"truth is, no," shawn says, making the testosterone brimmed boys look at him, confused. "aria broke up with me when we were in japan, because she didn't want me to lose my friendship with you," he begins, looking at brian, who briefly looks down. "i know you guys hate her, but losing her has made me realise that i need her to keep going. i'm in love."
"no you're not," brian says, shaking his head.
"yes," shawn urges. "i am." lyall looks between the boys, feeling their tension, and something must click in his mind, as he realises what has happened.
"you made them break up?" he questions brian, his arms folded.
"come on, we all wanted them to break up, i just took one for the team," he says bitterly.
"dude," shawn questions, hurt filling his expression. "what is your problem with her?"
"i like her, okay?" he bursts, making shawn flinch back in shock.
"i'm sorry, what?" shawn asks, completely startled, anger filling him. "so the real reason you wanted to break us up, is because you like her?"
"and the fact that you're going to ruin your reputation, but shawn, we've seen you in a relationships, and the way you are with aria isn't the same."
"that's because i'm in love with her!" he screams, his chest heaving up and down. "i did love lauren, but i wasn't in love! and all those stupid one night stands, and heck even hailey, i didn't love any of them! i'm in love with aria!" he yells. "you don't understand it at all, i can't physcially cope without her. i've been completely broken, i need her more than i know! i haven't been able to write at all, and its tearing me apart. i just want her," he presses. "and she will never be interested in you, you are filthy, brian, completely filthy."
"man, stop," matt says, putting his hand on his chest, pushing him back slightly.
"don't tell me what to fucking do! you don't control me," he spits, glaring at matt. "i thought, out of all people, you would understand," shawn says to him, making matt look down in shame.
"look, shawn, we don't oppose you being in love, but being in love with someone younger than you? she's not mature, shawn, not at all," ian says gently, making shawn step back, and fall into a chair, sitting down.
"i love her," he mumbles. "and i've lost her." tears fill his eyes, and he can't help to let his feelings completely go. after holding in all his tears, he finally gives in, crying into his hands.
"shawn," ian sighs, placing a hand on his back. "you can be with her, its just we don't want to see you being even more hurt when she says it's not serious."
"no," shawn sniffles, wiping his tears, his voice shaky. "there's no use. she doesn't want me to ruin my friendship with you guys, and it will do, if i continue to love her."
"what are you saying?"
"i need to fall out of love with her."
