chapter fourteen
Lets call it a truce, cause I don't really wanna go to bed like this - Shawn Mendes ft Julia Michaels, like to be you
-
aria sighs to herself, pulling her hood further over her head. she should have brought an umbrella, shawn was right. she had to fix what was going on between brian and shawn, she knew she had to. she couldn't bare to see shawn so heartbroken and upset any longer, she had to fix it before it gets too late.
she said she would study today, guess that wasn't the plan the universe had for her.
after getting off the train that took her to near where brian lives, she takes the longish walk, thinking about what she is going to say to him, thinking about how to fix his and shawns relationship. shawn is miserable without his best friend, it's so obvious.
she comes to his door, nervous as a cat, before she brings her hand to the door, gently knocking on it. brian answers about three seconds later, confusion knitted over his features.
"aria? what are you-"
"it's shawn," she starts, as he sighs, letting her into the flat, shutting the door behind her.
"what's happened with shawn?"
"brian, look," she says. "i know you like me, and i know you want to break shawn and i up because you want me, but you have to understand that i want shawn. i love shawn, i'm in love with him, he's the most important person in my life right now, and it hurts when i see him upset over what's happening between you and him. he started crying yesterday, he had all his emotions bottled up, and yesterday he let them all out," she says. she was thinking of telling him shawn was crying whilst they were having sex, but decides not to last minute. "brian, he needs you. and it kills me to see him without his best friend."
brian looks at her, and sighs, leaning against the island of the kitchen. "he's really upset?"
"yes! and without you two talking, or even looking at each other without wanting to slap each other-" brian cuts her off immediately, by standing up, cupping her cheeks, and pressing his lips to hers. aria stands in shock, taking the time to process what is actually happening, kissing back for a brief moment, before the realisation kicks in and she pulls away silently, confused, shocked, and guilty. "brian," she whispers. "i'm with shawn."
"are you sure? because you kissed back," he shoots to her.
"that's because i didn't know what was going on!" she says. "brian, this is the second time! at your shit together, understand i'm with shawn, and start talking to him, because i know for sure that you don't hate me."
"you break up with him, or i'll tell him that you kissed me, and who's he gonna believe? his best friend for over 15 years, or a girl he met three years ago?" he blackmails.
"you wouldn't do that," she shakes her head. "even if i tell him, he'll be broken, don't do this brian. either way you're gonna lose him. don't do this."
"does shawn know you're here?" she stays silent, folding her arms and looking down at the floor. "how? aren't you staying there?"
"i put sleeping pills in his water," she mumbles, looking away. "he's out cold."
"you drugged him?" brian yells, making aria jump. "oh for god sake aria, you don't drug your boyfriend!"
"they're natural sleeping pills, shut up!" she snaps, glaring at him. "now, please just don't tell him."
"whatever, just get out," aria grunts at him, before walking out of the apartment, rushing back to shawns condo before he wakes up.
what did she just do?
-
after walking around toronto for practically the entire day, instead of going back to shawn, she finally walks into the condo. the gloomy look over aria's gaze makes shawn concerned, and worried. he immediately rushes over to her, as she sits down on the couch, not looking up from the floor, almost as if she's frozen in time. shawn carefully sits down next to her, placing his hand on her back, as she shuffles away, standing up.
"what did i do?" shawn asks her gently, looking up at her. "was it last night? because i don't want you to feel as though i used-"
"i kissed brian," she mumbles sitting down again, falling into the couch, looking down at her hands.
"oh," shawn says softly, turning his head to the side, not wanting to even look at aria. "you're not even going to deny it?"
"he'd tell you anyway," she murmurs. "this way, i would get the burden. not your friendship."
"damn it aria, is it still about this?" he bursts, standing up from the couch. "because if it is, walk out. right now. i don't care about this anymore. i just want to move forward, not be stuck in the past over a petty disagreement, because really, it is childish. and i completely understand how brian likes you, and i hate him for it, but he can do him. he will never get you from me. but if you want to keep bringing up the stupid, fucking friendship, walk out. don't ever come back."
"don't you understand how i feel?" she screams, scaring shawn completely. "yeah, you're losing your best friend, but i'm the cause of your sadness! because of me, you and brian are in this stupid funk, god, if we never confessed our stupid feelings-"
"stupid?" he cuts her off with a bitter laugh, rolling his eyes. "stupid?"
"you know i didn't mean it like that," she spits back, shaking her head, trying to rid the thought of her and brian kissing from her mind. "you don't understand how i feel."
"then tell me," he says, slightly more calm, but still annoyed. "tell me how you feel, or just end this here. i'm not even annoyed about you kissing brian, he probably made the move first, i'm just annoyed at the fact that you think this is all your fault. it's my fault for having feelings for you."
"oh," she whispers, sitting back down, and pulling her knees to her chest.
"are you okay, aria?" shawn asks, sitting down next to her, putting his hand on her knee. "aria, you gotta talk to me so i can understand. and i want to understand. i don't want to be clueless about you. i want to fix this, come on, we're coming out as a couple soon."
"i know, i know," she says, letting out a shaky breath. "i'm so sorry, and for the record, he kissed me first. i didn't know what was happening."
"i know, aria," he says. "brian called be just before you came back."
"so why did you argue with me?" she questions in a small voice.
"just to confirm it," he says, shrugging. "aria-"
"lets just forget about this and go to sleep," she mumbles back, as shawn nods, sweeping his arms under her legs, and lifting her up effortlessly, taking them to his room, which will one day be hers too. he lays her down on the bed, pulling her clothes off, and placing a clean, white t-shirt over her head, letting her shut her eyes, and mingle with sleep itself.
he stands up, wanting to sleep in the guest room, not particularly wanting to disturb aria, and also feeling as though he can't sleep next to her. "where are you going?" she mumbles, half asleep, half assertive, as she reaches for his hand. "stay." he obeys, lying down next to her, sitting up with his back against the headboard, as aria knots herself into his grasp. "sing for me."
he faintly mumbles the lyrics to ed sheerans' dive, tracing little patterns over her shoulder, looking straight forward, staring out of the glass windows in front of them, in which the blinds are open, revealing the scenery of toronto city.
she thought she had lost him a little, but he was holding onto her so she would never lose him.
