A Knock
Mark sighed, stirring the eggs in the pan. It had only been a few days since everyone had come back. While he really appreciated seeing everyone again, the number of people in his home was really starting to freak him out.
Luckily, Matt had already booked a hotel and he took Stephanie and Ollie to stay there every night. But during the day they were here, and part of Mark couldn't blame them. But the combination of the general chaos of the world, as well as the sheer amount of people in his home and reaching out to him constantly, were overwhelming, to say the least.
From where he stood in the kitchen he could see Matt in the living room, an arm wrapped around Stephanie and talking to her quietly. Ollie was probably on the couch next to them. Amy and Ethan were both on the other side of the couch, completely enraptured by Animal Crossing- which Amy had fallen into completely when she found out it existed.
A knock resounded on the front door. Mark looked at the time- Who the hell is here at 10:30 in the morning?
"I got it," Mark called, pushing the eggs to one side. Matt looked at him and nodded, going back to his conversation with Stephanie. Ethan and Amy didn't even acknowledge that anything had happened.
Mark wiped his hands on his pants just before pulling the door open. On his doorstep stood a man, almost his height (if slightly taller). He had a suit on, and looked like one of the Men in Black.
"Hey there, how can I help you?" Mark asked, one hand on the door. He couldn't help it- it had become habit years ago.
"Are you Mark Edward Fischbach?" The man asked.
Mark could feel the blood drain from his face momentarily, "Yes?"
"And do you know the locations of one Matthew Patrick and Ethan Nestor-Darling?" The man stayed almost completely still, other than his mouth moving.
"Why?" Mark couldn't help but ask. If they were in trouble, Mark didn't know what he would do. He didn't even know what they would be in trouble for.
"I'm here with a proposition on behalf of Director Hayward of S.W.O.R.D. May I come in?" The man asked.
"Uhhh, sure." Mark stepped to the side, gripping onto the door handle. The man stepped inside, immediately capturing the attention of those in the living room. Mark shut the door and led the man further in, carefully calculating where the man would step. If he needed to, Mark would have to take this guy down to save his friends.
"My name is Agent Searle, I'm here on behalf of S.W.O.R.D. It's our understanding that you three have come into some powers?" The agent stood in front of the TV, blocking off Ethan and Amy's view of their game. Mark watched as Matt tightened his grip around Stephanie.
"How do you know that?" Matt asked.
"Accessing hospital records, S.W.O.R.D. has eyes and ears everywhere," Searle tapped his tablet for a moment. "We would like for you to join us as agents as well- as we are about to launch a new department because of the events of the previous week."
Mark remained silent for a second, but Matt spoke up again, "What about our families?"
"We'll provide housing for you, as well as top-of-the-line security details and the ability to continue the, uh, 'gaming' you guys call a job," Searle tucked his tablet under his arm.
Mark couldn't think for a moment. The idea of being able to save others, to help those in a way he hadn't been able to before- it excited him. One look at Amy was all he needed to confirm it, her steady look and the shine in her eyes basically screamed "Please do this."
"How many people have said yes?" Matt asked, looking at Searle.
Searle looked almost uncomfortable for a moment, "Not many. We've gotten a single yes, a couple of maybes, and a whole lotta no's."
"Have they given you a reason?" Ethan spoke up from his spot.
"They don't want to get out onto the field. Some just don't want to make themselves known publicly. If I'm being honest, Hayward thought you would be the best fit since each of you has already publicized yourselves as well as have a handle as to how to take care of yourselves in those situations," Searle looked at Ethan with a raised eyebrow.
"I'm in." Mark couldn't hold it in any longer, "Who else said yes?"
"Seán McLoughlin," Searle turned to Mark. "We got maybes from Phil Lester and Thomas Sanders, and no's from Daniel Howell and quite a few other civilians."
Ethan spoke up, "I'm in too then."
Matt looked between them, "I... I don't know. I don't want to risk anything with Ollie and Stephanie coming in, plus we're not even sure that I have powers yet."
Searle pursed his lips but said nothing on the subject as he handed Mark a business card. "Be ready to move within the next week, agents from S.W.O.R.D will be here to get your things by then. Matt, if you change your mind, you can always call the number that's on here. Mark, Ethan, we'll see you soon." And with that, Searle walked out of the house.
The group remained silent for a moment. A growl from Mark's stomach pulled him out of his stupor though, so he offered to go finish the eggs he had been making.
Later that night, Mark laid in bed next to Amy. She had spread herself out the slightest bit, nearly pushing Mark off the edge. But Mark didn't care much- his mind was stuck on the events of the morning.
"Hey, Amy?" Mark asked softly, looking over at his girlfriend.
"What's up?" She mumbled.
"Did I make the right decision?" He asked, voice still barely above a whisper.
Amy flipped so she could look at him, "Mark, you've been telling me for years that you've wanted to be a superhero. This is your chance, so I would say that you did make the right decision."
Mark sighed, reaching over and pushing her hair to the side. "I love you."
"I love you too, Mark. Now get some sleep."
Mark laughed briefly as Amy faceplanted into her pillows. He rolled over towards the door and sighed, falling asleep a few moments later.
