Lana's POV
My heart throbbed against my chest so fast, it nearly felt numb. I had no clue what had gotten into me, but once that odd silence hit, I just stared blankly at the vampire I met just hours earlier. Was he following me?
A sharp breath escaped my throat as I was suddenly aware of the cold air again, caressing my skin slowly, but surely, and causing those chills to run down my back.
"You." My voice came out slightly raspy, yet clear enough to keep his attention. I wasn't exactly aware of my own words.. It felt as one of those moments where the alcohol effects you quicker than you thought, and then words come out; senses numb.
"Yes, me." His voice once again snapped me out of my thoughts, and the more I got used to the silence, the more I calmed down.. I listened to his heartbeat, but it wasn't the same. And held my thoughts back, but the things that were slowly coming to my mind seemed awfully unbelievable. Was there someone in the house? "What are you doing in the middle of nowhere at this hour?"
Ignoring his question, I turned around again, looking up the house. I heard nothing.. No whispers, no voices, no heartbeat.
"Is this yours?" My words tumbled out quickly, nearly as a mumble. "I mean, is this your house?" Turning back around, I watched as he took a few steps towards me, but I didn't back away one inch. He wasn't what scared me. At that point, I was just creeped out from the situation I had just found myself in.
And then I heard that cold voice again. "Yes."
"Who's in there?" I once again asked without thinking; my mind slowly processing my own words.
However, all I saw was a quick tension in his eyes; a quick surprise from my question.
"No one." He glanced at the old house once again, before looking back at me. "You should get away from here."
As my mind cleared, I was more and more aware of my surroundings, and realized that maybe, it was just in my head. I was tired, and I could be making things up. However, I kept myself alerted. So, I decided to change the subject. He wasn't spilling anything anyway, and I was not as sure in myself to throw facts at him.
Taking a few steps towards him, I still kept a good distance before I stopped. "Before, in my house... What were you doing there?"
Silence fell over for a few seconds.. He seemed to be staring so deeply in my eyes, as if he was reading my soul.. I stared back with almost the same intensity. And then he spoke..
"You should really get away from here."
That same cold tone of his was supposed to make me take a step back, but the fact that he avoided my question only made that anger to jump immediately in my blood. However, I just ignored his words too.
"You know, you're lucky no one caught you earlier. You really took a risk for whatever you were looking for.." My voice trailed off as I tried reading what was hiding behind that cold expression of his, but also why he scanned me for so long.
"Well, you have me now." He answered calmly, with such an emotionless tone, it bothered me. But I knew that I had no time for that. I had no time to once again deal with this vampire that was only trying to provoke me. I lost my patience. I felt myself clenching my teeth, but refused to do anything about this. I didn't care that much.
Turning around, I took a few big steps towards the road and left this conversation behind me. A few seconds passed, and before I even made my way to the road, a sharp gush of wind was heard, and I almost jumped back when he appeared in front of me with no possible warning.
"Wait, what are you doing here?" The way he asked sounded like he was doubting in something, and doubts like that only happened when someone was hiding something.
I looked up at him, my eyebrows furrowed before I answered coldly..
"None of your business." I passed him, walking back towards the road.
"Where's your car?" He yelled from behind me.
I released a sharp breath. "I like taking walks." I had the urge to prove to this man that I could fight him, because he seemed to have an awfully confident picture about me in his head, and I didn't like it. It wasn't true. What, just because I was a girl, I couldn't be a fair competition? But on the other hand, I had other things to think about, and I didn't have the time to deal with him.
Even though my back was turned to him, and I was stumping towards the road, I could clearly see that very arrogant expression on his face; the cockiness in his voice..
"The first town is still a few miles away from here." As he spoke, his voice clearer to me, but the anger and annoyance grew bigger; it boiled deep in my system, as hot as lava. "I can give you a ride." I heard his voice clearly right behind me, but I continued walking.
I stopped, frowned and then glanced at him. "Why?"
He exhaled a sharp breath, like he got tired from trying to catch up to me, before he glanced at the empty gray highway. It wasn't really as big as a highway, and being high key away from civilization, there were no cars passing. Just the woods surrounding it from both sides. I stared at him intently until he looked back at me.
"'Cause you're alone in the middle of nowhere."
And then that smile appeared on my face. A dry laugh escaped my throat before I started walking down the road, once again leaving him behind.
"Please, like you care.." I said slowly, yet loud enough for him to hear me.
A part of me waited to hear what he had to say, but the other half of me got annoyed by basically every word that came out of his mouth. It just seemed like he was mocking me every time he spoke. However, I soon got my answer.
"Alright," Was all he said as I heard car doors opening and closing, and the engine starting.
I noticed that I had my lower lips pouted and my eyebrows were furrowed, like I was mentally convincing myself that I was doing the right thing, but at the same time I still felt a bit angry because he didn't want to answer me everything I asked. He showed no respect. And it frustrated me in the worst way possible.
He seemed like he didn't care about anything, he showed no emotion, and somehow that made me care. It confused me, and disturbed me because I couldn't understand, and I just wanted him to pass me with his car and get lost. I had enough for one night.
I was about 50 meters away from him before I heard the car catching up to me, and the lights illuminating my figure, tree shadows suddenly covering the gravel road and mixing with mine. And then, to my surprise, he slowed down, driving with the same speed as my walking. His window slowly opened, but the stubborn part of me controlled me at that point, and I refused to look.
"You can still use your chance.."
My brain slowly registered his words, and I realized I was getting used to his voice. It was no longer unfamiliar to me, and the cold, emotionless tone no longer surprised me. I stopped, exhaling a deep breath and closing my eyes. I crossed my arms, and looked at him, his car now stopped beside me, and his elbow sticking from the window. He was looking at me plainly, and simply rose his eyebrow slightly, like he was proving to me that he was serious. Last chance, huh?
I glanced at the road before me. I could no longer run. I was exhausted. And I didn't have enough water or food with me to last for 10 or so miles.. On top of everything, I had my pack — more than a hundred people probably on the lookout for me from tomorrow.. Once my father noticed of course. There was no way I was getting a good start with this plan if I continued alone. I needed that ride, and I knew it. From the look in his eyes, he seemed to be aware of it too.
So, without saying another word, I decided that I was going to use my chance. He was going to give me a ride to Moondale, and we wouldn't have to see each other's faces from then on ever again. A thought crossed my mind quickly... He could try to kill me. He was my father's enemy. But he was in the only car around, and wherever was better than back home. I had to pursue what I started. Besides, I had perfect strength and hands that could be as good of a rival as anyone else. If he tried something, I knew how to handle him. He was the one that was taking a risk.
Biting my lip for a few seconds, I got completely confident in my decision. I round his car, and simply did what may not be the best for me, but it was certainly — like he said — my only chance to get away from this road. And with that, further away from home..
~
Christian's POV
The road was completely empty. The darkness seemed to be consuming every part of the air, and the headlights of the car was the only light cutting that thick darkness. I tried focusing on the straight road before me, but I couldn't help but glance at the girl from time to time. I didn't trust her. Not one bit..
But she knew something. She was there for a reason. At the middle of the night; in the middle of nowhere... And that middle of nowhere, by some chance turned out to be Adam's old house. His body was in there, and if I came a minute later, she would've found him.
"Who's in there?" Her voice echoed in my head; the image of the confusion in her eyes flashing before me. How did she know there was someone in there? She was of course a werewolf, but Adam's heart wasn't beating.. She couldn't have heard him. At least so I hoped..
My mind was going through many possibilities quickly, and I couldn't focus on one. I had to get her to talk.. If she for some reason felt drawn to that place, I had to know why. I told her to hit the road, to get as far away as possible, but then it occurred to me.. Why was she so tempted to get in that old house? Everyone would want to get away, but she, for some reason was walking towards it. And if I wasn't there to stop her, she would've found what was in there. Who was in there...
So, a ride, wasn't really a big gesture, considering the fact that we were somewhere in between of nowhere, and she was alone in the middle of the damn night.. A part of me wanted to let it go. Perhaps it was only coincidence. But, that other part of me screamed to find out what she was doing alone in the woods at that hour, and why she wanted to pay the old house a visit.
It bothered me not knowing, and if I wanted to find out, to leave that disturbance behind, I had to have her close. I needed this girl to open up, because it wasn't just anyone in that house. It was Adam. He was everyone's enemy. And if Amelia's spell was fading.. He could seek for help. 'Cause I knew he was ready to do anything, to use every strength he had left against anyone that came across his path..
I felt myself clenching my jaw. My arm that was resting on the window frame instinctively went running down my face as I closed my eyes for a split second. The random music from the radio was the only thing distracting my thoughts and breaking that thick silence. However, the signal was getting lost, and the more we drove, the more it rustled.
As the sound went off and on, the only other distraction I had was the sound of her heartbeat. I focused on that for a few seconds. Faster and faster... She suddenly exhaled a sharp breath, and her hand moved on the radio as she turned it off. I looked at her and all I saw was slightly furrowed eyebrows, lashes that framed her eyes even from the side as she stared forward, a small nose slightly turned up, and plump cherry lips pouted in a way..
She had the kind of skin tone that seemed slightly olive, and when her face was slightly illuminated in that kind of darkness, it seemed to hold a soft glow. She didn't seem like a big threat to me, even though she really tried hard to prove it. I dragged my eyes back on the road, and continued looking for a way to focus on anything but my thoughts. Adam was out of our way for now, but there was still too many things connecting to him. It bothered me.
A few seconds passed, and I could feel her eyes on me. The first time after that 10 minute drive she moved her very focused gaze from the window to a different direction. It was true about werewolves.. They were stubborn.
"What?" I heard myself as without taking my eyes off the road.
A few beats passed before I heard her answer. "What were you looking for in my house earlier?" Her voice came out questionable, just like before, but there was that confidence in it.. Convincing in sort of way, it almost made me answer.
"Why are you going to Moondale?" I returned with a question, going through that thought that there was definitely a good reason for her to leave her pack. Wolves had a connection with their family.. That's why they always traveled in groups. But Lana.. She was proving some things differently. And it made my stomach turn with curiosity of what was it.
Before even a short second passed, she barked back, always talking fast and clear, like she was more than just certain in her 'facts'.
"I asked you first." I glanced at her for a second. What a childish game.. Releasing the air from my lungs slowly, I looked at the straight road again.
"I already told you, I was looking for something that belongs to me." I listened to my words, picked them carefully, because I knew this girl wasn't just a pretty werewolf. She was the daughter of the most powerful Alpha, for fuck sake. No one knew what could occur her mind. Werewolves, especially Morphers were very much unpredictable.
A few seconds passed, and it seemed like she was registering my words. "What? What were you looking for?" She said calmly this time, and I realized that my brain was slowly getting used to her voice. It was very feminine, but it had that rasp that formed a small hiccup at the end of every question.
I pressed my lips together. One half of me was telling me tell her. Maybe she knew where the necklace was hidden. But this other half of me didn't trust her of course.. Besides, what I was doing wasn't easy. It was dangerous and the last thing I wanted was to pull her into this mess too.
"You don't want to get involved in this, Lana. Trust me." I looked at her for a moment, and found large bright eyes staring back at me. I couldn't tell which color they were in the dimly lighted car; blue or green. But as they were turned a bit upwards, like her skin was softly stretched from her tied hair, the pair of blues seemed even more curious than before. She really wanted to know more than she was supposed to. I glanced at the road again. "Your turn."
I heard her exhale slowly, but even though her heartbeat was steady, her breath seemed like it was trembling. It just pushed me to want to know if she had anything to do with what I did. I couldn't understand what she was doing in front of the old house..
"I have some things to take care of." Her voice trailed off. "Get away for a while."
I noticed myself frowning in thought.. It was still a mystery to me of what this girl was doing there in the middle of the night, but there was something about her words that made me think deeper in the situation. Get away.. Getting away for many of them wolves meant being sent to get something done, because, of course, a bigger group would attract more attention.
I felt myself losing that patience of getting her to open up, and I just wanted her to get to the point. I wanted to know, because whatever it was, it lead us both to the old house that Adam's body was in. The situations could be connected, and if Adam was waking up and calling out for help, it meant no good. However, it was still just a assumption. None of it had to be true.
I looked at her, my mind now completely focused on her; what she had to say..
"Why?" As those millions of mistrusting thoughts went through my head; my brain desperately trying to solve this new mystery, I didn't even get to be there in reality.. I just looked how she shook her head, and as her lips parted in order to answer, with that serious expression on her face she looked up. Her eyes widening, and her voice coming out louder than I expected.
"Watch out!" My brain couldn't process the situation that fast, but my foot instantly went on the break as I looked in front of me. The car stopped in its tracks, both of our bodies instantly gluing on the seats. The headlights illuminated a large amount of wood placed in the middle of the road, burned, and surrounded with ashes. Branches and all kinds of other things were around, and it was set in the shape of a roadblock, perfectly blocking the whole road.
Silence fell over and only our deep breaths broke it. My mind stopped working for a second, like it shut off. Things could've went hell of a wrong at that point. If she didn't tell me to stop, the car would've crashed, but even though we would heal, the accident would've been noticed by the humans, and having to deal with them was the last thing I needed.
"Shit," She cursed sharply from the side, her voice trailing into a uncertain whisper.. The thing was, no one would expect this in the middle of the road. Before I could say anything, I heard her door being opened as I glanced at her. She stumped out, and stopped in front of the car, taking in the view. It was preoccupying to thing of all the possibilities that night, but I lived enough to know that this wasn't put there by accident. And whoever did it might be still out there.
Walking out, I shut the door behind me, and joined her, stopping in front of the car as well. I was trying to figure out what was the story behind this, but she seemed to express her confusion perfectly without needing more of mine..
"What the hell happened?" Her voice broke the silence and echoed in my head, but I was too concentrated on the roadblock to even look at her.
I ran a hand thought my hair, somehow hoping I would take away at least a little from that pressure in my head, but it wasn't working.
"Someone likes playing games.." I said, mostly to myself, but before I say more, my thoughts got interrupted to a slight noise coming from the side of the road. I looked, but there was no one there. Just plain darkness. And Lana didn't seem to notice at all.
"Who did this?" I heard her voice from the side as I took a few steps towards the side of the road. There could be anything in the woods, but what I heard was definitely not an animal. It was a human step. And then I heard it again.. I stopped, frowning and using all my strength to see and figure out who out there. "What was burned?" I heard her ask again, but we had no time to figure out what kind of wood this person burned. The roadblock was there to cause an accident. Purposely.
"Get in the car." I told her, ignoring her question, and not even bothering to look at her. I didn't need her getting in trouble too. I had enough questions to figure out myself, and she was just an extra thought.
"Wha,- Why?" I turned around finally, looking at her standing right where she was when she walked out. Her ponytail flew on the side from the wind, and she had her arms crossed against her chest in protest. But there was no time for stubbornness.
I felt that frustration building inside me, that anger blocking my sight. I turned on the side and waved her with my hand.
"Just get in the damn car, Lana. The road is blocked." I told her as if she didn't already know that. But the girl just didn't listen. She completely ignored my words, and as I looked at her, I noticed how straightly she was standing, now staring forward, then on the side, like she was trying to figure this out as much as I was..
Turning around, I walked towards the car and took out the metal shovel. It was always there for cases like this.. Or slightly different surprises we had coming along. I walked back in front of the car, and immediately tried pushing taking some of the amount of the wood to put it aside, but it only worked halfway, and then the shovel didn't go any further. Like the woods was as solid as a rock.
"Wha- Really?" She said with some kind of annoying tone that went straight to my head and caused that frustration to boil up inside me. Instantly. "That will take forever."
I stopped, looked at her, and watched how she looked down, almost as if she felt unpleasant by the way I looked at her. She should. She moved her foot and trying putting away some of the wood, but it obviously didn't work.
"You got a better idea?" Uncrossing her arms, she puffed loudly, and within a few seconds, released her hair from her ponytail, and moved towards the front of the car.
"Can't you drive over it?" Her tone was now a lot calmer, but the answer was pretty obvious. She leaned on the car, crossing her arms once again, and looking at me with that curiosity in her eyes. I knew she wanted to hear a 'yes, but..
"No." I said coldly, taking the shovel and starting to head towards the car too. "Get inside." But of course, she didn't obey one bit. Instead, she took a step towards me, perverting me from continuing.
I looked at her, her face now close to me and the anger that flashed behind her eyes very much clear. I realized that it wasn't her ponytail that stretched her skin and made her eyes and eyebrows a bit upward, it was just the way they were. And the fact that they were bright and large made it easier for me to read her. But then I heard that angry tone of hers again, and as always, it didn't change much.. It only made her look more confident.
"Do not tell me what to do. I never wanted for this to happen, and I'm just as frustrated as you," Her voice trailed off and I noticed how she searched my face, scanned it, like she was trying to figure out something..
But she was just someone I needed a bit more information from, and I wasn't going to let her read me. Of course I wasn't as obvious as her. She was like an opened book. I saw every emotion behind those eyes, since last night, till now..
"So,"
As she rose her hand to continue, obviously snapped out of whatever was keeping her silent for a few seconds, I took it, and pulled her a bit closer. There was definitely someone out there, maybe listening to everything we were talking, and the last thing I needed at that point was to argue with her.
"There is no time for me to handle your attitude, Lana. So, get in the damn car, or you can stay here and walk to Moondale."
I somehow managed to keep my voice quiet and actually whisper to her, even though she was pushing me to lose all the patience I had left for her. I somewhat expected her to continue, but instead she just moved a small space backwards, and looked at me, like she had got the message. In the process, the slight waves on her hair brushed my face, and that sudden smell of fresh Jasmine hit my nose. It made me realize the closeness, so I took a step back and passed her, continuing towards the back of the car.
By the time I put the shovel back in the truck, I realized she got inside, and I knew that it wasn't because I threatened her. She thought there was someone with us on that road as well. I looked around before opening the door, and getting back inside.
However, before I could go in reverse and turn the car around, she stopped me by placing her hand on the wheel.
"Is there someone out there?" She asked, curious cat eyes staring at me.
I looked forward again. Why wasn't she letting me start the car? Exhaling sharply, I glanced back at her.
"I thought you would know.."
"I didn't catch a scent."
"Neither did I."
A beat passed.. Two. "This is the only way to Moondale." She spoke, her voice slightly trailing off like she was actually talking to herself.
"We'll find another." I told her slowly. This girl seemed like she needed a bit comfort, 'cause for whatever reason she was going to this town, it seemed important to her. Like she was in a hurry.
However, all I got was two words. "I'm walking."
Two damn stupid words. Neither of us had a clue who might be out there, or what might be out there, but she decided to play brave now, and 'walk'? That instant anger boiled in my veins, and my senses came clear. My thoughts, however, were blocked by that sudden state of spite in my head.
"No." I said clearly, not even bothering to look at her, because I knew she would frustrate me even more..
I heard her puff meaningfully, like she was trying to prove some point, but when she tried getting out, none of that happened. She went quiet for a few seconds, and then spoke slowly and calmly, like she was trying to keep herself together.
"Unlock the door."
"Do you even know who's out there?" I asked her, finally looking back at her. She had a large stand of her hair over from one side to another, and the rest was just a long wavy mess. And even in the dark, I could see how angry she was. But before she could say anything, I continued. "There's a motel a few miles back. I'll drive you there, and first thing in the morning, I'll make sure we both get to Moondale."
I tried sounding calmed, and that's what made her consider it perhaps. But, I couldn't let her slip away that easily. I still didn't find out what she was doing there, in the middle of nowhere, and 'by chance' in front of the old house that Adam's — hopefully, unconscious body was in. If he was awake, he had the power to call after people, werewolves, and whoever got past, because he needed blood to start functioning again, and get away.
I didn't get the chance to check on Adam, 'cause I knew that I didn't have much time left either. Calliope was waiting for me in Moondale. I had to get there and figure out how to find that necklace. It could be my only chance of destroying Adam once and for all. After Vanessa and I sprinted through the woods, we got to the house where our cars were parked. She said she would check, and she did, but I didn't trust her.
So I told her to go to Moondale, and said I had some things to take care of. I had to check if Adam was still there or not, if he was even conscious, 'cause the spell was fading for sure. However, minutes after Vanessa left with her car, I found out that I had company by the very same person I had to deal with hours before...
Now, she was in the same car as me, and just as impatient to get to Moondale as I was. I would assume that she saw something back at the house, 'cause she seemed pretty concentrated on whatever she was thinking of, before I snapped her out of it. And all I wanted was a few more hours to get to know what it was that she saw, or heard.. It could change a lot. Besides, she was Khan's daughter. The chances of her knowing where the necklace might be were pretty big. I could use them.
I looked at her, and saw how she leaned her head back at the seat.
"Fine." She said through a breath, and looked back at me.
Good girl. For the first time, the little wolf listened to something. I just hoped it wasn't the last time, 'cause I needed her for a lot damn more than just to get her to that motel. She seemed pretty tightly connected to the same situation I was. And like it or not, Lana could be the solution to everything I was looking for.
