Chapter Two- 'Mads.' And Monsters

I found out the boys name was Alby, but I still hadn't figured out mine yet. So Alby just called me 'Mads' short for Maddie I guess, but he thought that name stood out because he found me quite mad. In a good way im hoping...

I wanted to explore this place more, but Alby said not yet. We had only been here for a few weeks now, and Alby wouldn't let me go out the walls. We also learned the walls closed every night at a certain time. The box we came up in had some crates in it, for basic supplies. Like food and stuff. But there were weapons in it, which was bizarre. Unless we aren't alone here.

At the moment I was sat across from Alby on some random picnic bench we found, eating a sandwich I managed to make with some food the creators gave us. Alby broke my train of thought.

Why do you think they sent us up here? He placed his sandwich down and leant his elbows on the bench, waiting for my answer.

I dont know. Maybe we are criminals. I shrug, but then rethink my answer. Maybe its an experiment.

If that was true, why? I look on Albys face and can practically see the cogs turning in his head.

They lock us in here and see what we do. That seems logical, but unusual. If that was true then why the hell did they trap us here? Whats the point. Are they just cruel?

I try to lodge that thought to the back of my head. I dont really want to think about that. What I want to think about is that damn maze and how we get out of it.

Forget that for now Albs. We wont get anything done if we keep sitting here. I slam my hands onto the table, putting a confident and determined face on.

He sighs before groaning, clearly agreeing with me. Your right. He looks over to the maze, has he got an idea?

Lets check out the maze. Its pretty early. He checks the watch on his wrist that the creators sent up for us, We still have a few hours until the doors close.

Yeah! Lets just check out the first few corridors and then head back.

I suddenly had an idea, that may just work. Wait. What if we got the knives and cut the vines off across the wall so we dont loose our path back to the glade? I raise my eyebrows at Alby with a slight smile.

Like breadcrumbs? Not a bad idea Mads.

I know, im so smart.

I beg to differ...

What was that?

Oh nothin.

Didnt sound like nothin.

Might wanna get ya ears checked Mads.

Might wanna get ya mouth sewed shut Albs.

We have a slight staring contest, before getting up and heading to one of the crates that have a few small knives lay inside them.

Alby passed me a knife, with a case, it was like a dagger. I liked it. He grabbed one similar to me and attached it to his hip, I copied his actions.

Soon enough, we had backpacks packed with a sandwich, water, a second dagger and a small notebook with a pencil, in case we wanted to write anything down. We then headed through the doors and down the first corridor.

We have been running for at least an hour now, we have both been cutting the vines as breadcrumbs and its been working well so far. We havent come across anything dangerous. At least not yet. I was keeping steady breaths, as was Alby, his backpack and running vest bouncing slightly as he jogged ahead of me.

We paused for a few minutes, catching our breath.

Should we head back now? I asked Alby, him looking just as worn out as I was.

Yeah, probably. Lets go. I nod and follow him as we turn around to jog back to the glade.

But before I can jog with him, I heard a mechanical whirring sound.

Alby- He cuts me off, with a finger to his lips. I take it he heard it too then.

We both pause, and stand beside each other, both unsure of what to do. Do we wait it out and see what it is? Or leg it back to the glade? I wait and see what Alby does. I point towards where we here the sound and shrug, Alby nods. That means he wants us to investigate.

I slowly tiptoe over to the corner and peak around it, as Alby does the same behind me. My breath hitched at what we see, and I can practically feel Alby freeze behind me. My eyes widen. What the hell is that.

It was grey and green, with bubbly skin. Six metallic legs sticking out of it either side, a long spikey tail extended all the way down the corridor. I could hear its slight growls. We could only see the back of it, but whatever it was, I didnt want to mess with it. A small dagger against that, would equal a squashed pancake, I would be the pancake by the way. I step back and thankfully Alby does the same. We try to go as quiet as we can, but I step on a goddamn rock, which sends it crackling across the bloody corridor. I mentally facepalms and Alby glares at me. Soon the metallic whirring starts up again, the fresh smell of oil fills my nostrils. I turn my head, its right behind us.

Holy shit. I mumble to no one in particular.

Run! Alby screams at me, taking off and pulling me with him, making me stumble slightly, but soon enough I get my footing and run as fast as I can, following the breadcrumbs trail.

I turn to the side to look for Alby, only to see him gone. I shout his name a few times, the monster is still chasing me and theres no sign of Alby anywhere. I take a few different turns, still cutting vines along the way, just not as neat.

I feel some sort of claw grab my backpack, quickly making my reflects kick in as I get lifted off the ground. I wriggle out of it, rolling on the ground a few times, whacking my head against the concrete which made me curse a few times. But I quickly get up and begin running again. I suddenly get pulled through a bunch of vines and my mouth is covered. I keep struggling to get free, but soon see its Alby. I let out a sigh of relief at least I know hes okay. He still has his covered over my mouth, because I had the most ragged and loud breaths that could possibly be known to man by this point. I quickly cover his, so we are even. I try to smirk under his hand but im too freaked out to even twitch my lips. The monster makes a bunch of creepy sounds, oil fumes fill my nose again. I freeze completely and squeeze my eyes shut, hoping this thing doesnt find us.

After a few minutes, the whirring stops, a few loud bashes of metal against concrete, then its completely silent. I leg go of Alby as he does the same to me and i peak my head out of the crevasse Alby pulled us into. We both quickly an quietly leave back to the glade. Making it just before the doors close.

What the shuck was that?! Alby freaks out slightly.

Shuck?

Better then fuck.

I shrug, but quickly go back to the subject beforehand. It was all blubbery! It chased me for ages! Where the hell did you go?! Can those things get into the glade?! How many are there?! I shoot question after question, just as creeped out as Alby is.

Woah, stop. We gotta work this out. He leads me over to the lone hut that is sat by one of the glade walls. This was already here surprisingly. One bed, one dresser, all the necessities one person needs. But theres two of us. We make it work.

I sit down on the bed as he sits next to me. We sit in silence for a few minutes, before I break it.

Griever.

What?

Griever. I say louder this time.

Why?

Just seems...familiar. Fitting. I shrug.

What do you mean familiar? I shrug again, it just does I dont know how.

First of all, this is the first one we have come across in the weeks of being here. None have entered the glade yet, so im hoping it stays that way. Alby has a slightly shaky voice, but I dont point it out. We are both just as shocked as each other.

Right. Yeah. I swallow my panic down, trying to control my shaky hands. That was super freaky, what if it grabbed us or something? Maybe they cant enter the glade?

I dont know, but we are not going back into the maze for a while.
