Chapter-10.
Ddhsshhhhmm..d..tssh....dhmmm
"Oh god! What's that noise?" I said as I woke up from an unslept sleep.
I saw someone's legs hanging down the bed above mine. I peeped out of my bed to see who it was.
Yes, it was your beloved Catherine!
"What? Is she holding my guitar? Why the hell is she banging the strings so badly?" I said to myself.
I jumped off my bed and stood in front of Catherine. I raised my hands in the air indicating WHAT?
"Okay. Don't give those silly expressions." She laughed as she jumped off her bed. Yes, she jumped off her seven and a half foot high bed with my guitar in her hand.
"Are you mad? You could have hurt yourself.. and my guitar!" I opposed her action.
"Well, I saw you were asleep when I entered the room. I waited for like, half and hour. But then I felt pathetically bored. So I thought of waking you up. Waking you up normally by shaking you would have been boring and not my type. But then I thought of a different way. My little friend Guity helped me."
Trust me, she said this so casually as if I was just pretending to sleep and ruining my sleep was as casual as the way she said it. I stared at her badly.
She was a few inches taller than me, so I had to raise my eyes to some level. She was a freaking 5'8" and I, a damn 5'4".
"Wait. Who is Guity?" I asked. My head still raised and my eyes still staring at her.
"Oh, yes! I just named you guitar as Guity. Cool name, right?" Again she replied casually. How can she be so casual. It's my freaking guitar!
Catherine is strange. My guitar's name, Guity, literally sounds like guilty. Something is different about her.
"Yeah, right. Cool name." I replied rolling my eyes sliding my hands into the jeans of the pocket.
"So, let's talk." She said, jumping on my bed and placing her butt partially on my pillow and her back touching the wall.
"Umm... okay." I said as I hopped on the bean bag.
"So, did you make any friends here? Like, except for sleeping.."
I paused for some seconds pretending to think. But back in my head, I was very clear that I haven't done anything except sleeping.
"Uh..no.. I guess." I shrugged.
"Woah! I was seriously expecting you to say my name." She said, sounding disappointed.
How could I take her name? I mean, we hardly had a conversation before this.
"Maybe I'm sorry, then." I said doubtfully.
"Never mind. Want to go out for a walk?" Catherine asked excitedly.
"Pretty cool. Not a bad idea."
We walked out of the room, shutting the door behind us. We started walking towards the right. All I could see was a long row of rooms painted red and blue.
I was looking everywhere around like a weird nerd who has been taken to some unfamiliar location. And of course, this place was unfamiliar for me.
"Why the heck are you looking around so erratically? I'm not going to kidnap you or something. Chillax!" Catherine exclaimed.
"No. I'm just trying to memories each and every path, Catherine. That's it. So that even if I get lost, I'll be able to find out the way back to our room." I replied casually, trying to tell Catherine how it is to sound casual and careless even though you don't have to sound that way.
"You are so stupid. I was just taking you to Mrs. Nancy."
"Mrs. Nancy? Who is she?" I asked curiously.
"Hailstone Vale's one and only cook..!" Again, a casual reply from her side. She was giving me so obvious looks as if Mrs. Nancy was my personal cook and I have known her for a long time now.
"And what are we going to do there?"
"Oh, yes. We'll butter her up. That's all." She gave me those obvious looks which she had been giving me past seven minutes.
"Butter her up? Are you out of your senses? I don't want to get expelled on my first day itself." I said as I turned back to walk away but she caught my hand and pulled me back. "Why are you so boring?!"
"No. It's a bad bad idea, dude!" I said thoughtfully.
"C'mon. We'll just go to her and talk all sweet. Well, if she likes a person, it's no less than a lottery. Similarly, if she like you, she'll make your favourite dish for tomorrow's dinner. Just a piece of knowledge, do say that you like Chicken. That's it." She dragged 'that's it'.
Honestly, I was confused. I wasn't getting what is she trying to make me do. And chicken? It's just a mere coincidence that I like chicken. What if I hated chicken or what if I was a vegetarian..?
For the long lecture she gave me on buttering, she was expecting a reply but I kept walking straight.
After around five minutes of walking, we reached a large empty ground.
We stood there and Catherine pointed out at a small house situated at the end of the ground.
"That's where Mrs. Nancy lives. But be careful, it's a dangerous place." Her one hand was pointing in the direction of the house while her other hand rested on my shoulder.
"Dangerous? Any ghosts here?" I asked, thinking of it to be funny.
"You must not laugh. Here lives a Doberman, or I'd rather say, a dangerous Doberman! It runs behind every human as if it will eat them raw, except for Mrs. Nancy."
Okay, now this sounded serious. My equations with dogs have never been good. And this was a 'dangerous dog'.
I took a deep and long breath and swallowed all the saliva I had. There flowed visible terror in my eyes.
"Okay, you ready, May?" Catherine asked, patting my shoulder.
I nodded in a half yes and a half no.
"Run as fast as you can. Do you understand?" She commanded.
We took positions as if we were some trained athletes.
"1....2......3 and run!!" Catherine shouted.
She ran as fast as she could. But I— I was still standing there. Yes, I did not run.
Actually, when she started with that '123' thing, an idea struck my head. I just thought that when Catherine will run, of course the dog will run behind her. Leaving the path clear for me. It would get easier for me to reach Mrs. Nancy's house. Smart? I know!
As she ran, a few seconds later I saw a dog running behind her. That dangerous dog! And sure, it was barking very strongly and angrily.
Catherine ran across the open land and behind the trees. I saw my path was clear and safe. I started walking casually. I was walking so casually as if I was having my Morning walk.
Yes, I could hear Catherine screaming and bursting her vocals put, but we'll, it was her idea to go to Mrs. Nancy.
I reached Mrs. Nancy's house and rang the doorbell and hit the door twice.
The door opened and I saw a women nearly in her 40s. She was as white as a feather and I won't say beautiful, but she looked amazing!
"Hello, Fredri—" she said as she was opening the door. "Oh! I thought it's Fredrick. My bad. Who are you?" Mrs. Nancy asked. Sure, she was expecting someone else but then her high hopes shattered; it was me.
"Oh. I— I am May Miller." I replied, examining her house.
Even before Mrs. Nancy could say anything, we both looked across the door as we heard someone breathe badly.
Welp! It was Catherine. She was gasping for breathe. It must have been hard for her to run for so long, I guess.
She was holding her knees and bending down.
After she was done, she looked up at me and gave me the same stare that dog gave her; it again felt dangerous!
