Freya Shelby was known as the emotional one. She was nothing like her brothers. She wasn't cold like Tommy. She wasn't a prisoner of her own head like Arthur. She wasn't childish like John. She wasn't like her niece either, the girl who let grief overtake everything she did.

Finn was her twin meaning they were obviously the same age only Finn was older by four minutes and that was something he never let her forget. He would pull the "well I'm older," card everytime Freya asked him to do something and he refused. Finn was the only one that didn't treat her like a child despite being older. They were best friends and the Shelby's had learned really early on that Freya would stand in front of a bullet for the boy, quite literally and Finn would do the same.

She loved the four of her brother's differently. John was her favourite that was no secret, everyone knew it but yet her other brothers didn't treat her any differently because of that. They treat her differently because she was the youngest and not to mention a girl.

The blonde wasn't the only Shelby sister. There was Ada, who she was closest to, gave her advice about things the boys would shut her down before she even finished her sentence. Then there was Polly, her aunt who like Ada helped Freya through everything.

Growing up, the blonde girl hardly had any friends except, Charlotte and Isaiah although the latter was closer to Finn and Michael than the girls. Freya and Lottie were attached at the hip and have been since the age of six when the brunette moved in across the street and bumped into Freya and knocked her over causing the blonde to shout at her until she took pity on the other girl since she was crying. The Shelby name would normally drive kids away from Freya except Lottie who refused to leave the girl lonely.

Tommy, Arthur and John had all agreed they would shield her and John's kids from the horrors that the world entailed. They did their best to protect her and did their best to keep her away from and out of the Blinder lifestyle. The war had contaminated and broken her brothers, their minds left of France. When they returned home they returned broken but swore to keep Freya from the cruelty of the world.

As time went on it became harder and harder to keep Freya out of the business, she was too nosey. Still, the girl remained innocent of the harshness of the Blinder's lifestyle and never witnessed anything her brothers didn't want her to see except on Christmas Day, 1925, when John had taken a bullet to the chest to save his sister, daughters and wife. She didn't know what to do, she refused to believe he was really dead. She refused to believe her brother had been murdered on his own doorstep by the Italians conducting a war against the Shelby family.

Due to Tommy needing to build an empire, the Shelby enterprise had become one of the largest businesses in the country it meant they had many enemies who were out for blood, more specifically their blood and yet Tommy couldn't stop one of their enemies turn up on John's doorstep leading to his death.

The Shelby family were devoted to each other, many would say they were thicker than thieves. They were far from perfect but they had each other's backs and protected each other and that was enough for them. They argued like cat and dog but in the end when it came to it they would die for each other.

Regardless of the bad blood between them, John's death brought them back together. A family reunited by tragedy thus making them stronger against their enemies.

Nothing prepared Freya for this. The Italians. A vendetta set out to be won by whatever means necessary, erasing one side completely. John was the first casualty. There were to be no survivors.

Life was brutal, Freya learnt that first hand. John Shelby was taken from the world far too soon and yet life allowed evil men to walk the earth in place of the good souls. She was too young to understand when her mother had died but when John died she understood it clear as day. A piece of her died with him and left a gaping hole in her heart and the world crumbling at her feet.

The gaping hole would later be filled by a ambitious boy wanting to be a boxer who was sweet and fascinating and showed the blonde what it was like to heal. He showed her that life gives as well as takes.
