chapter twenty nine - we are grounders *unedited*

When Bellamy returned to camp, following at least ten feet away from Dakota. They fought on the way back, about Octavia and now Bellamy was livid. How dare she tell him what's best for her? And to tell him to back off? Octavia is spending time with the enemy, how does that not wave warning flags? He couldn't let himself feel this way about Dakota, she had so much control over how he felt and she found his way under his skin. He couldn't let her distract him from the bigger picture, the Grounder war.

Bellamy turned his head to glance over at the Burnette who was heading with Murphy with the meat. He thought he would return to his tent for a few moments, to ease his temperamental mind, but upon entrance into his tent, he found himself not alone. Raven was inside, pacing back and forth towards the back.

"What are you doing here?" He asked roughly.

"They don't waste time, I'll give them that. What's it been? Day and a half?" She spoke sourly, and Bellamy instantly knew that she was upset about Clarke and Finn. Half the time Bellamy didn't want to deal with his own feelings, let alone someone else's.

"You're mistaking me for someone who cares." Bellamy shrugged. "Time to move on." Bellamy's words were harsh, but true.

Without paying attention to her, Bellamy shred his jacket, expecting Raven to leave his tent and get on with her night. Instead, he was found surprised as she sat down on his makeshift bed and took her shoes, and then her jacket.

"What are you doing?"

"Moving on." Determination colored her voice as she lifted herself from his bed and unbuttoned her pants, stepping out of them and leaving them at the side of his bed. She walked towards him and he shifted away, realizing what she meant. Raven took the tie out of her hair and let her black locks fall down her back as she locked eyes with him. Instead of looking down at her body, Bellamy watched her face, searching it for answers.

"I've never been with anyone but Finn." Raven admitted as she looked down. "Take off your clothes." She spoke hesitantly, and Bellamy knew the look in her eyes, one that he had himself. This was her wanting to prove that she didn't care about Finn and that she didn't care that he was off doing whatever it was that he was doing with Clarke.

"Fine." Seeing his lack of response, Raven spoke flatly. "I'll go first."

She didn't miss a beat as she shed her shirt, and let the fabric fall to the floor with the rest of her clothes. Bellamy felt that it was wrong, he knew it would be considered taking advantage of a girl who'd been heartbroken, but the truth was that he needed someone to take Dakota off his mind, he needed a distraction.

"If you're looking for someone to talk you down, tell you that you're just upset and not thinking straight... I'm not that guy." Bellamy said as he put his hands on his hips.

Raven watched him for a few seconds. "Good." She bit out, not backing down at his watchful stare.

Raven's determination, her fire, reminded him of Dakota and the way she often spoke to him. Bellamy tired to shake off any thoughts of her as a different brunette closed the gap between them as she kissed him, tugging impatiently at his shirt.

"Monty?" Dakota called out to the dark-haired boy as he came out of the drop ship. "Have you seen Clarke and Finn? All the hunters are back but they aren't and I'm started to get worried about them. They were with that kid Myles too, weren't they?"

"Yeah. They left a while before you and Bellamy did," Monty agreed, a concerned edge now to his tone as well.

Before Dakota could answer him back, Octavia along with Jasper came up with them. Octavia saw the worried look on her friend's face, and wondered what was wrong. "I see worried faces," Octavia walked up beside Monty. "What's wrong?"

"Dakota says Clarke and Finn haven't come back from hunting yet but they left way before she did, and all the other hunters are back," Monty explained. Jasper looking between them with a grin on his face.

"Yeah, but it's Clarke and Finn, you know?"

Octavia nodded with a smirk on her face. "I bet there's nothing to worry about, Kota. They're probably getting it on somewhere within the forest."

"O, they were with Myles, and no one has seen him either" Dakota sighed.

"We could look for them," Jasper suggested. Dakota stood there, chewing on her bottom lip. It was dark, and there's no way Bellamy would let her leave the camp.

'I should tell Bellamy," Dakota decided. She needed to tell him about the possible missing gun that Finn took.

'I think I saw Raven go into his tent a little while ago," Jasper spoke up.

At first, Dakota didn't think nothing about it, but the more time her mind wondered, she realized it was because of the Radio's she announced. When she got into eye sight of Bellamy's tent, Raven rushed out with her boots in her hand, and her hair was strangely not in her usual ponytail. Dakota began to pick her speed up, now jogging her way to Bellamy's tent. When she opened the tent flap back up, she looked to see Bellamy lying naked under is covers, it was pretty clear what had went on in here.

Bellamy sat up, propped on his elbows, and swallowed thickly as he watched Dakota stiffen and her jaw clench.

She glanced to her right, unable to look at his face as the tears started to brim her eyes. "Clarke, Finn, and Myles are missing. They're not back yet so I'm taking Jasper and Monty to find them."

Bellamy saw the look on her face as she tried to keep her tears at bay, and he felt something he never had to feel before when he'd have sex-guilt. "I didn't hear a question."

'I wasn't asking." He watched as her head turned to stare at him, and he knew she was serious.

"Fine. I'll come with you."

"Don't bother." Dakota snapped.

Things were silent between them until Bellamy avoided her eyes and turned back to his bed. "Look, about what happened-'

"I don't care what happened," She interrupted him, earning his attention back. "I'm taking Octavia with me." She told him and Bellamy went to protest about taking in his little sister but she left before he could even speak.

Dakota refused to be hurt by his immature actions, She grabbed the first gun she saw, and loaded the bullets. Octavia found her way over to her bestfriend, and immediately saw the look of hurt written all over her features. She saw the way her jaw was tensed, and how she was griping the gun so tight, her knuckles started to white.

"What happened?" Octavia asked.

"Nothing, let's leave. Clarke and Finn are our priorities." Dakota said sourly, and by the tone of her voice, Octavia knew something had happened between Bellamy and Her. She knew something was going on between them, but Dakota never addressed it with her. Octavia took a quick glance back at Bellamy's tent, which to her surprise Bellamy stood outside of it, staring back at her.

****

'Where are they?" Octavia hissed aloud as she and Dakota walked through the dark forest cautiously, looking for any sign of Clarke, Finn, and Myles.

Dakota walked along side Octavia, she had her gun pointed alertly. "Relax, we will find them."

"I thought you were heading west. Where are you?" Monty's voice was panicked.

"Calm down, Monty. Get the moon on your left and you'll find us eventually." Dakota spoke back to him over the radio.

"I think Lincoln likes you," Octavia decided to speak up, changing the tense atmosphere that washed over to them.

Dakota glanced over at her, taken back by her comment. "Why do you think that?" She asked curiously.

"He just thinks your a true born leader. They way you put yourself in front of that arrow to save Clarke. Not many people would do that." Octavia explained. "Grounder's would do that with no hesitation."

Dakota smiled contently, she knew this made Octavia happy that her and her love were getting along. "Is anyone else hearing this signal?" Monty asked distractedly with a shaky breath.

Octavia brought the radio to her lips. "Just keep your eyes open."

"I think it's the same thing we heard in the black box."

"Damn it, Monty!" Dakota snatched the radio from Octavia and hissed into the device. "Enough about the stupid signal, any sign of Clarke and Finn?" There was no answer. "Monty? Do you read me?"

Suddenly, there was a strange screech from the radio, and Dakota handed it to Octavia with a annoyed sigh. That's when she heard a sound behind her. With her gun locked in her hand, she watched the bushes in front of her move. "There's something in the bushes."

Octavia nodded and gathered up the courage and approached the bushes along with Dakota. She pushed the bushes to reveal who was hiding. Dakota sighed in relief as it revealed Myles, and her grip on her gun relaxed. "Myles?" He groaned at her and she put her gun back in her pants as she helped him to his feet.

As the moonlight hit his figure, Dakota could see two arrow's coming out his flesh and she swallowed. "What the hell happened?"

Jasper rushed through the bushes upon hearing Dakota's voice. "Where are they? Clarke and Finn." Octavia asked him.

"Ah.. the Grounder's took them," Myles breathed in pain.

"We need to get back to camp," Dakota announced to the rest of her search party.

"What about Clarke and Finn?" Jasper inquired.

"We will have to come back for them. Myles is loosing a lot of blood, and I need to stop it." Dakota shook her head as a worried sigh came out of her mouth. "We will have to get a bigger search party. We'll head out a first light."

"They could be dead by then!" Octavia protested.

"They could already be dead, now." Dakota said softly. "But we're not abandoning them."

Jasper brought the radio to his lips as Dakota and the other's made a stretcher to carry Myles on. "Monty, we're heading back to camp. Can you find it? Monty? Monty!"

Jasper's eyes locked onto Dakota's worried ones. She reached for Jasper's radio. "Hey, Monty? Do you copy?" She asked, "Monty?" She asked again, but there was no answer. Only static.

Dakota knew she couldn't voice her concern for Monty at the moment, they had bigger things to worry about, like a kid bleeding out. She told Jasper that he was probably keeping things quiet as he trekked through the forest towards the camp, she told him not to worry until they got back to the camp.

****

"Come on, these foxholes aren't gonna build themselves!" Bellamy's voice was heard throughout the camp as I helped Raven with fixing the land mines in the west woods. I wasn't so overjoyed to work with Raven on this one, but since I was experienced in mechanics, I had to help her.

Myles was placed in the lower level of the drop ship as Jasper, Octavia and I arrived. He had two arrows sticking out through his shoulder, and knee. Which I had removed them both, and now that he was all bandaged up, and taking it easy.. I had another job to complete.

Bellamy's footsteps grew closer, "Better hope those land mines work. With all the gunpowder we're wasting, we could be building more grenades."

"They work." Raven assured him as she bent down with the trip wire in her hand.

"Why don't you come over here and test one?" I suggested sourly as I helped to make sure the wire was steady. "That's the only way we will know for sure."

Bellamy rolled his eyes, "Cute. I need this entire section mined by morning, then you finish the south field." Bellamy turned to leave and I watched as Raven jumped up and called for him.

"We're going after Clarke, Finn, and Monty in the morning. I told you, we need a search team."

"And I told you nobody leaves this camp."

"Don't walk away from me." Raven gripped his arm and turned him around forcefully. "We're not abandoning our own people! I don't care who the hell is in charge here, but if you want to be, you better show these people that you actually give a damn whether or not they live or die."

Bellamy turned back at her, about ready to angrily counter her accusation, but before he could there was gunshot fired behind them. Bellamy left Raven's side and angrily ran up to Sterling, who was the one who fired the shot. He looked like he was dazed and lost, barely able to keep his eyes open.

'What the hell is the matter with you?" Bellamy growled.

"I-I'm sorry, man, I fell asleep. I've been on watch all day," Sterling defended himself. Losing his temper, Bellamy reached forward and grabbed Sterling's collar forcefully.

"We've all been on watch all day! That bullet was one less dead Grounder!"

'Bell," Octavia spoke quietly, watching as Bellamy held Sterling up against the tree. "You're scaring people."

"They should be scared!" Bellamy released Sterling and he turned around to the rest of the camp. "The bomb on the bridge brought us some time, but that time is up! The Grounders are out there right now, waiting for us to leave and picking us off one by one when we do! Clarke, Finn, and Monty are gone, probably dead. And if you want to be next, I can't stop you! But no guns are leaving this camp! This camp is the only thing keeping us alive."

Everything went silent, but soon everyone was waltzing back to what they were doing. I sighed and got back up, walking over to where Bellamy and Sterling were.

"If you've come to-"

"Shut up." I cut him off bluntly, "I'm here to take Sterling's spot, so he can sleep. Why don't you go and help Raven. Maybe you can learn something from her, not that you haven't already." I looked back at Raven as she stood there; slack jawed.

"Dakota-"

"Sorry, did I stutter?" I grabbed the gun from Sterling as he quickly walked away with his head down low. "Now back up before I blow your head off." I snapped while pointing the gun up at his head.

Bellamy's jaw tensed, and his mouth closed as he obviously realized it was better to leave me alone then fuel my fire. I watched him as he turned to leave, but not without glancing back at Raven first.

My outburst had a crowd gathered up, "Get back to work!" Bellamy ordered those that gathered around.

Hours later, I found myself contemplating whether or not to shoot myself in the head, and it all became clear when Raven decided to show her face at my post. She had her hands in her jacket and she approached me with a frown on her face. I turned my head slightly to see her face.

My jaw clenched as I held my gun tighter. "Dakota.." Raven trailed as she approached. "I.. uh-"

"You what?" I turned around sharply with a scowl on my face. "You wanna come apologize? Well guess what, Apology denied." I turned back around to look into the forest.

"Dakota, just let me explain-" Raven raised her voice out of desperation.

"Explain what? I get it you're upset about loosing Finn-'

Raven's eyes darkened when I mentioned Finn's name, and her tone completely changed. "Don't. Don't talk about him." Raven came up to my post, yanking the gun out of my hand.

"You think you're the only person here whose lost someone? I've lost my mother, I've lost my father. I have lost the only person I have ever loved, and it's a fucking miracle that he is still wandering the camp."

"Finn is all I have left, If I lost him-'

"You'd what?" I raised an eyebrow at Raven. "You'd crawl into bed with someone to make yourself feel better? Have you forgotten your bestfriend who stood by your side? You've already lost Finn since he came down here, and guess what? Looks like you have no one else, because you've lost me too." I screamed at her as tears started to run down my cheeks. Raven looked back at me as a tear escaped her eye. Her hand came up to wipe it away, and she was about to say something until people started a commotion in front of the dropship.

I glanced at Raven one last time before deciding to see what was going on. I launched myself through the crowd of people, battling my way to the front.

"What's happening?" I asked Octavia.

"Murphy." She breathed back,

"Murphy?" I questioned.

"He's got Jasper locked in the dropship." She said, her eyes locked on the door.

I let out an annoyed sigh, that boy could not stay out of trouble. I darted towards the medal door, and started to bang on it. "Murphy?" I yelled. "Let Jasper go."

"Dakota, stay out of this!" Murphy's voice yelled back and I sighed. I turned towards Bellamy who's lips were in a thin line. "Well, do you have an idea of how to get Jasper out?"

"Until you interrupted, I was making a deal." Bellamy answered.

I frowned. "What deal?"

"He doesn't want Jasper, he wants me. So I go in, he comes out."

I took a sharp breath, and instantly felt like my lungs ran out of air. Did I really just hear him correctly? I knew I was suppose to be angry with him.

"But Jasper will be okay?" I asked him, Bellamy's jaw tightened as he looked down at the ground.

"Earth to Bellamy." Murphy's voice came crackling out of the radio that was on his hip, "How does this work?"

"Simple, you open the doors, I walk in, he walks out." Bellamy responded, his voice wavering slightly at the beginning, his eyes still trained on me.

I bit down on the inside of my cheek, and stared back at him. A loud creaking noise blasted around me and I knew the doors were opening, but I didn't move.

"Just you, Bellamy!" Murphy yelled, "unarmed!"

Octavia was whispering her silent protests, but Bellamy ignored them, the intensity of his gaze was burning through me and I didn't know what to do. I picked Jasper's safety over his, but I was suppose to be angry at him. But right now, it felt like the whole situation has changed, this could possibly the last memory I could have of Bellamy, and I wasted it with my stubbornness.

"Ten seconds or I'll throw one in Jasper's leg!" Murphy threatened before counting down.

"Raven will find a way to get you out." Octavia said, desperation clear in her tone as Bellamy handed her his gun.

"I can handle Murphy." Bellamy responded to his sister, "Get everyone back to work. The grounders are still coming."

Five

"I'm here." Bellamy yelled out for Murphy, and he briefly looked back, locking eyes with me before he disappeared behind the parachute.

Minutes later, Jasper was thrown out with a gag around his mouth, and his hands bound together. "Jasper!" I breathed out and grabbed his arm as he fell to the ground.

Octavia was next to me in seconds, and she untied the rope which was keeping his hands together. "I got him." Octavia looked up at me. We watched as the dropship door started to close, and I knew that was the last time I would see him.

A gunshot rang from within the dropship and my heart instantly sank. Octavia put the radio to her lips as she heard it too. "Bellamy?" She called out to him.

I looked over at her when there was no response, "Bellamy! Are you okay?" She asked desperately. "Bellamy! Do you copy?"

Bellamy's voice called out on the radio. "I'm fine. Just a misfire. Now stop worrying about me and get back to work, all of you and tell Raven to hurry her ass up."

I bent down on my knees as I held my head low. I let out a shaky breath and Octavia bent down as she placed an arm on my shoulder. "It's okay, Raven will.. she will get that door open."

I looked back up at her, and a single tear escaped her eye. I was about to open my mouth to speak when another gunshot fire echoed from the dropship. Octavia and I both shot our heads up at the sound.

"No.." I whispered as the tears started to stream down my cheeks. I felt someone touch my back again, and I yanked away from them. More gunshots sounded, and my heart was racing. My eyes darkened and I approached the dropship doors, pounding my fists as hard as I could.

"Murphy!" I yelled out, "Murphy, this isn't you! Please.." I sobbed, but there was no answer on the other side. Suddenly the door creaked, and began to open. I blinked a couple times and walked backwards.

Once the doors were open, I rushed inside with Jasper coming behind me with his gun raised. My eyes widen with the sight before me, and I completely froze in place. Bellamy's body was dangling from the ceiling, and Jasper pushed past me to get Bellamy down. Octavia appeared beside him as she unsnapped the seatbelts, terror filling her expression as she watched her usually strong older brother, struggle to breathe.

I looked back up at the Hatch that Murphy used to escape and my feet started moving. I climbed up the ladder and banged on the door. "Murphy, Murphy it's me. Please open up!"

Murphy let me up, but immediately closed the hatch after I climbed up and jammed something through it before anyone on the lower level knew what was happening. Murphy was going through the ammo, yelling in anger as he did so.

"Murphy, stop. You're done." I spoke. "You had one chance, Murphy.. You have no where to go, you're trapped."

"You should be helping me! You're suppose to be my bestfriend!" Murphy turned to face me.

"I am your bestfriend, I am trying to help you-"

"Murphy!"

The yell had come from below and a terrified look crossed Murphy's face as he realized it was from Bellamy. "Murphy! It's over!"

"John.." I grabbed his shoulder.

"There's only one way out of this for you now!" Bellamy continued yelling, his voice rough.

"Want to bet?" Murphy smirked. I turned him around as a tear escaped my eye, and Murphy's face softened.

"Don't.. please. Murphy, without all that gun powder we'll all die."

"Then come with me. We can run, leave them all behind." Murphy pleaded, his hand coming up to caress my cheek. "I'll keep you safe.." He whispered while leaning his forehead to mine. I smiled sadly, but I knew I had to stay here. I had people I cared about here, I had Clarke, and Finn... Bellamy..

"I-I can't.." My voice growing quiet as I looked into his blue eyes.

Murphy looked away as he nodded. "I get it. I'd say we would meet again, but that's highly unlikely." He smirked, but I could see the sadness through his eyes.

"Murphy.." I reached out to him but he moved his arm out of the way.

"I just want you to know, that I loved you.." Murphy spoke, his voice cracking. Suddenly, a gunshot rang and the force of the explosion sent me flying backwards. Murphy glanced back before disappearing into the trees.

The entire space was filled with airborne dust, and I let out a cough. I groaned out and reached for my head as Bellamy finally forced the hatch open. "Murphy!" He screamed.

"He sure knows how to make an exit." Jasper muttered, "Should we go after him?" He asked, looking out the gaping hole in the dropship wall.

"No, grounders will take care of Murphy. We're going after Clarke, Finn and Monty."

I let out a tiny chuckle. "Don't worry about me over here, guys. Not like I just flew through the air or anything."

"Dakota!" Jasper gasped out, helping me off the floor. "Are you okay?"

I nodded. "I'm fine, Jasp." But my eyes glanced over to Bellamy. "Are you okay?"

Bellamy nodded. "I'm okay." He looked over at Jasper. "You guys were right. We don't abandon our own. Two guns. You and me, that's it. Dakota, you and Raven will stay here and build up defenses." He passed by me towards the ladder. "We lost a day because of this. And our gunpowder." He growled.

"Bellamy, wait." Jasper said, grabbing his shoulder before he could start going down the ladder. "Look, I just-" He paused and hugged him which made me smile. Jasper pulled away and smiled at him. "Long way from 'whatever the hell you want', hm?" Bellamy let out a small hug, his lips turning into a small smile as he looked down at the floor.

"All the gunners we got movement outside of the south wall! Someone's coming!"

Bellamy instantly darted down the ladder, I following suit. "Hold your fire! It's Clarke and Finn! Open the gate!" Miller yelled, and I sighed in relief.

"Hey, we heard an explosion! What happened?" Clarke gasped out, sounding breathless.

"Murphy happened." Bellamy explained as I found myself hopping into the arms of Finn, his arms hesitantly wrapped around my waist.

"I'm glad you're okay, spacewalker." I smiled at him and pulled away.

'Thank god!" Jasper hugged Clarke tightly. "Where have you been? Where's Monty?"

"Monty's gone?"

"Clarke!" Finn caught her attention briskly. "We need to leave. Now. All of us do."

"Leave?" I repeated, shaking my head, confused. Finn looked down at me and nodded.

"There's an army of Grounders...unlike anything we've ever seen coming for us right now! We need to pack what we can and run."

"Like hell we do!" Bellamy contested. "We knew this was coming.

"Bell," Octavia warned him from beside me. The crowd around us formed a circle. "We're not prepared.

"And they're not here yet! We still have time to get ready. Besides, where would we go? Where would be safer than behind these walls?"

"There's an ocean to the East." Finn responded. "People there will help us."

"You saw Lincoln," Octavia breathed out, almost in relief. Finn nodded, but Bellamy shook his head.

"You expect us to trust a Grounder?" He turned to the crowd. "This is our home now! We built this with nothing but from our bare hands! Our dead are buried behind that wall in this ground. Our ground! The Grounders think they can take that away... they think that because we came from the sky, we don't belong here! But they've yet to realize one very important fact; we are on the ground now. And that means we are Grounders!"

"Yeah!" The crowd chorused as someone within It added. "Grounders with guns!"

"Damn right!" Bellamy agreed explicitly. "I say let 'em come!"

He turned back at Clarke, who stepped forward and addressed the crowd in her own manner. Her voice was less deep, less throaty and scratchy as Bellamy's was, and she spoke with articulate words that seemed to penetrate the minds of everyone under their rule.

"Bellamy's right," Clarke confessed. "If we leave, we may never find a place as safe as this. And God knows, in this world, we could be faced with something even worse tomorrow! But that doesn't change the simple fact that if we stay here, we will die tonight. So pack your things. Just take what you can carry. Now!"

And the crowd dispersed, following Clarke's orders over Bellamy's. Bellamy looked at Clarke and realized the power she held, but she didn't apologize for it. She was doing what she thought was best.

"Help me!"

In the mixture of murmurs from the people in the crowd, Clarke, Finn, Octavia, Jasper, Bellamy, and I all heard the soft cry. Looking towards the drop ship where the plead had come from, Raven walked out from behind it, limping with her hand at her side.

"Raven," Bellamy noticed as everyone rushed to her side. Finn was the first to reach, standing right beside his ex-girlfriend as Jasper gasped.

"Murphy shot her," he realized. Finn picked Raven up in his arms.

"Get her into the drop ship," Clarke demanded. Finn took her inside as quickly as he could and Jasper followed them. Clarke moved for it, too, but Bellamy stopped her.

"Clarke, leaving here is a mistake."

"The decision's been made," she urged.

"Crowds make bad decisions! Just ask Murphy." He paused. "Leaders do what they think is right."

She stepped away from him, nodding. "I am." Clarke disappeared into the dropship and Bellamy swore, looking distressed as he headed in the direction of the graveyard. I decided to follow behind him. "Bellamy.."

'What!" Bellamy exploded. "What do you want now!"

I blinked. "I was just coming to say that I was sorry-"

'You're sorry?" Bellamy laughed and shrugged me off. "Just go pack your things."

I screamed out which Bellamy instantly turned his head to look at me. "God, why are you such an asshole! I'm trying to fucking apologize and you-' Bellamy grabbed my neck, and crashed his lips on mine before I could finish my temper tantrum. I found my hands having a mind of their own, and tangling themselves in his dark hair.

"Bellamy.." I pulled away from him, confused and quite surprised.

Bellamy shrugged his shoulders. "We could be dead by tonight." His voice was quite. "I'm sorry I hurt you, okay?"

I looked into his chocolate brown eyes, "You're lucky I never blew your head off." I mumbled before pressing my lips against his again, knowing that this was possibly, most certainty the last time I would feel him.

Raven's screams pierced all ears of those who were outside the drop ship and did even worse to us that were inside. Clarke, Finn, Bellamy, and I were all hovered over Raven who had a bullet wound in her lower abdomen. Raven had a death grip on my fingers, crushing them together and I bit down on my lip to stop myself from yelping when Raven squeezed harder. Finn, who was holding her other hand, exchanged a wary glance with me.

I was mad at Raven, perhaps a little too angry, and now here she was with a damn bullet wound. I couldn't lie and tell myself that I didn't care about her in this moment, but I did. Both Finn and I were worried out of our minds. The bullet was too deep for Clarke to even try and get it out and the blonde had stressed that there wasn't enough time for her to operate safety, so cauterizing the wound in order to stop the bleeding was the only think Clarke could do.

The smell of burning flesh lingered in the air, and I tried not to breathe in it, knowing that as soon as I did.. vomit would be everywhere.

"There," Clarke placed the blade down on the table, the tip still glowing a bright orange. "That should stop the external bleeding."

"I don't understand. How did Murphy get a gun?" Finn asked, drawing his eyebrows together as he looked towards Bellamy who stood silently beside me, his expression conflicting.

"Long story." Bellamy responded vaguely, feeling no need to waste time with explanations.

"We got lucky. If Murphy hit the fuel tank instead of me, we'd all be dead." Raven let out a long-winded sigh.

Clarke's eyes widened. "Wait, there's rocket fuel down there? Enough to build a bomb?"

"Enough to build a hundred bombs. If we had any gunpowder left."

'It makes sense," I murmured. "The thrusters never kicked in on time, so there would be hydrazine.." I sighed upon not realizing this before. "Dammit! If I figured it out sooner, we could have used that instead of the shitty mines we did use."

"Relax, it doesn't matter now." Bellamy sideways glanced at me. "Let's get back to the Reapers," Bellamy urged as he looked through Lincoln's journal that Clarke and Finn had brought from their unfortunate expedition outside the wall. "Maybe they will help us. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, right?"

"Not this enemy." Clarke's voice was cold and dead serious. "We saw them, trust me. It's not an option."

"There's no time for this!" Finn looked at Clarke. "Can she walk or not?"

Clarke shook her head. "No. We have to carry her."

"The hell you will! I'm good to go." Raven tried to sit up straight, almost the minute she got up to her elbows, Clarke pushed her down gently.

"Hey! Listen to me. The bullet is still inside you. If by some miracle there's no internal bleeding it might hold until we get somewhere safe. But you are not walking there. Is that clear?"

At the coldness of Clarke's tone, Rave laid back down where she was placed in the dropship with a defeated sigh.

"Ill go get the stretcher." Finn announced, ready to go find the object when Bellamy's voice pulled him to a halt.

"Can't run away fast enough, huh? Real brave." Bellamy murmured, louder than one normally would because he wanted Finn to hear it. Finn turned back at him immediately, offended by the comment.

"Dying in a fight you can't win isn't brave, Bellamy! It's stupid."

"Spoken like every coward who's ever run from a fight-'

"Hey!" I shouted at the two of them, my voice loud and hard. Bellamy and Finn didn't move their stares from each other. "Chill it with the testosterone in here, okay? Finn, go get the stretcher."

"If they follow." Bellamy turned around sharply. "It's a 120-mile walk to the ocean."

"Look, we're wasting time!" Finn snapped and looked over at me. "If we want's to stay, he can stay."

"No he can't!" Clarke was the one to say it as she watched Finn go out. I watched as she struggled with whether or not to go after Finn. Clarke shook her head and turned to face Bellamy. "We can't d this without you, Bellamy." Clarke pleaded.

"What do you want me to say, Clarke?"

"I want you to say that you're with us. Those kids out there, they listen to you."

"They're lining up to go, they listen to you more." Bellamy countered her argument.

"I gave them an easy choice. But five minutes ago, they were willing to fight and die for you. You inspire them." Clarke's eyes glanced over at me. "And I'm afraid we're going to need that again before this day is through.

When Bellamy said nothing, Clarke sighed and left the drop ship. "She's right you know." I spoke quietly while walking up in front of Bellamy. "Do what you think is right, Bellamy. Just remember that there's strength in numbers. Fighting alone will only get you killed." Bellamy looked up at me as I gave him a sideways smile before leaving the drop ship. I trusted that he would do the right thing, and come with us.

I made sure that the gunner's knew how to proceed in the forest, having planned a circular ring of gunners surrounding those unprotected that were carrying our supplies. As I waited for the last of the gunners to leave camp, I realized that there was still one person left; Bellamy.

He stared up at the dropship longingly and then turned just as Clarke re-entered their grounds and all of us came together in the middle.

"You did good here, Bellamy," Clarke assured him.

He frowned. "Eighteen dead."

"Eighty-Two Alive. You did good."

"Both of you," I added as I looked between Clarke and Bellamy. "You both saved more lives than we lost. Don't ever forget that."

The three of us grew quiet, breathing in the fresh air that we all got so accustomed to ever since Octavia made her first step on the ground. Reaching behind Clarke, Bellamy used one of the barrels of water he had and turned, walking over to the fire and putting it out so that it went up in smoke.

'You did good, too." Clarke turned to me. "If you never helped trained, a lot of us would be dead."

I gave her a half smile, putting my hands in my jacket. "I help people. It's what I do." I shrugged my shoulders as I watched Bellamy turn around, throwing the barrel down. Bellamy looked down at me with a small smile, and he put his gun on his shoulder as his other arm wrapped around my waist. We were the last ones to leave the camp.

After walking for awhile, loud chatter began to break out among us, and after a stern warning from Bellamy, the conversations quietened to a low murmur.

Eventually, however, Octavia signalled for everyone to stop. Bellamy tried to make his way to his sister but I held out my arm, stopping him from making an unnecessary noise.

"I don't see anything.." Jasper's voice was quiet, but in the silence it sounded like a yell.

"What the hell is going on?" I tried to stand taller and see over the mounds of people, but even Bellamy who was a few inches taller, wasn't quite sure himself. He opened his mouth to respond, but right when did, something flew in the air and the next thing we could hear is a body dropping. It all seemed clear when Jasper's voice rang out.

"Grounders!"

Everyone broke out into a sprint, running the opposite direction from whatever happened, but Bellamy and I ran even faster so we could get back first and lead everyone inside. There were to many indistinct shouts, cries of terror, and demands from those herding the crowd. The second everyone was inside the gate, a dozen people struggled to close it. Bellamy stood at the side of the gate, standing on the mound let them see into the forest.

I walked up beside Bellamy with my own gun cocked. "You see anyone?"

"No." He responded. Clarke joined us, looking for herself to see who was attacking, but no one was outside the entrance. "Where are they? Why aren't they attacking?"

"Because we're doing exactly what they wanted us to do." Clarke realised.

"We're being herded. They've got us trapped." I swallowed down the panic as I spoke to Clarke.

"What are you talking about?" Bellamy frowned.

Clarke turned to Finn who was already watching her. "Lincoln said the scouts would be the first to arrive."

"If it's just scouts we can fight our way out." Determination was etched across Octavia's face. "That's what Lincoln would do."

"We're done doing what that grounder would do." Bellamy shot back, and I rolled my eyes at his tone, following him down to Clarke, Finn, and Octavia. "We tried it and now Drew is dead, you wanna be next?"

"That grounder, saved our lives! I agree with Octavia. For all we know there's one scout out there."

"One scout with insanely good aim." Jasper interrupted, looking stressed.

"Clarke, we can still do this." Octavia pleaded with Clarke rather than her brother.

"Looking to you, Princess. What's it gonna be?" Bellamy asked Clarke. "Run and get picked off out in the open, or stand and fight back?"

Clarke looked over at me. "Kota? What do you think?"

My eyes widen in surprise as she was picking me with this decision. "What?" I blinked. Clarke nodded at her. "C-Clarke.. I don't know if that's-'

"I trust you to know what's best," Clarke pushed and looked out into the crowd of people, waiting for a decision. I watched them all, while I fought a battle in my head. What would Kane do?

I let out a breath, closing my eyes as I tensed. I opened them again, and spoke loudly while looking into the crowd. "We stay and fight!

Bellamy helped me down off the mound, and when I was down, Bellamy turned to the crowd powerfully. Octavia and Finn were clearly disappointed in my decision. "Okay, then! This is what we've been preparing for! Kill them before they kill us! Gunners to your posts. Use the tunnels to get in and out. From now on, the gate stays closed."

Everyone immediately moved to their posts. I saw Octavia start to run towards the foxhole Jasper had disappeared into but Bellamy stopped her before she could get too far. "O, O, you're not a gunner."

"No, I'm not." Octavia admitted, much to Bellamy's surprise. "But it's like you said, I'm a Grounder."

Octavia looked at me, "Lincoln wanted me to give this to you," She took a sword off her back and my eyes widen.

"Hold onto it.. I don't know if I'll survive this." I gave her a weak smile, which she returned with a hug.

"Thank you for not treating me how everyone else has." Octavia whispered. "You're a good friend, Dakota." Octavia pulled away.

"Don't act like this is a goodbye, O." I grabbed her shoulder and nodded at her. I grinned at her determination as she disappeared in the foxhole.

I stood beside Bellamy where our entire plan was mapped out in a small visual presentation "We've got 25 rifles with 20 rounds each, give or take; roughly 500 rounds of ammo." Bellamy explained.

"While you guys were missing, Raven and Dakota built landmines. The entire gully is mined."

"Particularly mined, thanks to Murphy," Raven corrected her.

"It'll still blow these bastards to hell, Raven, no matter how many mines there are. It's the main route in." I spoke up, looking at Clarke and Finn with a nod. "Not only will it injure them, it'll let us know how close they are and where. It's like an alarm system."

"An alarm system that blows people up," Bellamy nodded before turning to his side and picking up a grenade from a box. "She also built grenades."

"It's not many," Clarke stated disappointedly.

"Again, thank you Murphy," Raven replied sourly.

Bellamy paused. "We'll make them count. If the Grounders make it through the front gate, guns and grenades should force them back."

Clarke looked at Bellamy and I. "And then?"

"Then we close the door and pray." Raven spoke instead, causing Clarke to look back at her.

"And pray what? That the ship keeps them out? Because it won't." She looked back at Bellamy and I, waiting for a concrete answer. I looked over at Bellamy wearily.

Bellamy's eyes flickered down to the presentation and sighed. "Then let's not let them through the gate." He brought his radio up. "All foxholes, listen up. Keep your eyes and ears open. Inflict casualties as many as possible. You can hold them off long enough to make them turn back; that's the plan."

Finn grimaced. "That's always your plan, just like the bomb at the bridge."

"Damn right. You got a better idea?"

"Yeah, I had one." He looked over at me. "Until Bambi here decided to ignore it."

I rolled my eyes. "Your plan was just as stupid as this one, Spacewalker." I snapped angrily, crossing my arms. Finn scoffed. "Don't look at me like that, you know it's true."

"It can't be that simple," Clarke whispered as she looked down, her fists clenching. Clarke suddenly turned around to Raven. "You said there's rocket fuel in those rockets, right? Enough to build a hundred bombs?"

Raven frowned. "I also said we've got no gunpowder left."

"I don't want to build a bomb." Clarke looked back at me with a nod. "I want-"

"To blast off," I finished, "You know I'm up for things going boom. This is brilliant, Clarke."

"Draw them in close.." Raven trailed off, looking up at Clarke in appreciation. "Fire in the rockets. A ring of fire."

"Barbecued Grounders. I like it." Bellamy added.

Finn turned to Raven, "Will it work?"

She hesitated. "The wiring's a mess down there, but yeah. You give me enough time, I'll cook them real good."

***

It was night when we finally heard the war drums. Those inside the camp struggled to be nourished for the upcoming fight and maintained a very impressive amount of sanity; although fairly, their repressed fear was brought out the moment the war drums were in the distance.

"What the hell are they waiting for?" I growled under my breath as I approached Bellamy's side.

"The longer they wait the better. This is about buying time for Raven."

"I see them! They're moving!" A voice crackled through the radio. "I count one, two, three.. no wait there's four! I don't know man, there's too damn many of them!"

Gunfire immediately sounded.

"Who was that?" I asked with a frown.

"Sterling I think." Miller answered.

"South foxhole, report now!"

There was an explosion before Sterling crackled back through again. "Yeah, yeah. We're okay. They didn't attack, it's like shooting a ghost."

"There!" Monroe called out. "I see them!"

I grinned as dark figures started running across the forest. I stuck out my tongue and bit it as I looked through the scope. I shot one down.

"Stop! Stop! Hold your fire! Reload now!" Bellamy commanded.

"Those are our last clips." Miller sounded grim, grimacing at the disbelief on Bellamy's face.

"We should- we should pull back now!" Monroe's voice was shaky.

"No, if this position falls, they'll walk through the front door."

There was more gunfire as I lowered my gun, observing the patterns in which the grounders were running.

"Jasper we need you in the dropship, now." Clarke's voice came through the radio.

"Negative, we can't give up the west woods."

"The west woods are mined Bellamy, the Grounders just figured that out. Jasper, get in here!"

From beside me, I could hear another one of the guns begin to click. Miller shot at another figure as my eyes widen, finally realizing what the Grounders were doing this whole time. I reached over and snatched the radio from Bellamy's hands.

"What-?"

"Hold your fire! Stop shooting! They're drawing our attention to them, they want us to waste our bullets."

Not a moment later, and Jasper's voice came through. "Dakota's right, don't shoot when they're running laterally!"

"Don't fire until your sure it's an attack." I confirmed, handing the radio back to Bellamy.

Then the grounders were on us.

"Here they come!"

I shoot carefully, trying to make each bullet count but it was hard when every which way I looked, there was something to shoot. My heart started to beat faster.

"Monroe, get back here!"

Monroe had run away from the battle, and I glanced back at her, one of the grounders had pinned Bellamy and was slowly choking the life from him.

Miller had been attacked, but he was swinging around blindly. Suddenly, something hit my side and I went flying back into the ground. I let out a grunt as a grounder set a punch to my jaw, I slammed my skull into his, buying myself a little time to get my gun up and shoot him in the head.

The large Grounder collapsed on top of me, and I struggled to get him off me. I turned on my stomach when I noticed Octavia, stabbing the grounder who was holding Bellamy down.

"Admit it, you were wrong." Octavia breathed to Bellamy moments before an arrow struck her leg.

I reached for Octavia as she stumbled into Bellamy, who looked panicked. "Miller, fall back, now!"

"Can you walk?" Octavia slumped even more, and I made my way over to the Blake siblings to give her support. "O, hey, hold onto me, we have to get you behind that wall."

I could barely hear Clarke barking orders to the gunners before there was a sudden nose, followed by bright light above them.

"What's that?" Octavia panted, looking pale.

"I don't know." Bellamy frowned. "A dropship from the Ark maybe?"

I swallowed. "No, that is the Ark." We all watched as explosions occurred in the sky, spewing large fireballs from the atmosphere, but there were other parts that they could see were heading right near their location.

"Take down the gate! Attack! Attack!"

The grounders began to move until a new sound entered old. Hooting and chanting broke through everything else. Bellamy took advantage of the chaos, setting Octavia down on a tree stump.

"Who is that?" Octavia asked.

"I don't know, while they're distracted, let's move."

"I'll never make it." Octavia gasped out. "Leave me, I'll find another way."

"I'm not going anywhere without you." Bellamy denied her request immediately.

"Neither of us are." I confirmed.

"Octavia!" The voice put all of us on edge until Lincoln's familiar features became visible.

"Lincoln!" Octavia immediately pulled Lincoln close and Lincoln shot Bellamy a wary look.

"You did this?" Bellamy asked roughly.

"With Finn." Lincoln confirmed, looking at Octavia's injury. "It's deep. I can help you but you'll have to come with me now." Lincoln seemed to look at Bellamy for permission.

"Go, let him help."

"No way, I have to see this through!" Octavia shook her head.

"You can't walk and I can't get you back to the dropship."

"He's right, this fight is over for you." Lincoln agreed.

"Kota-" Octavia begged.

"You need to go, O. He'll keep you safe, you won't be safe here." I told her.

"O, O, listen to me. I told you my life was over the day you were born. The truth is, it didn't start until then. So go with him, I need you to live. Besides, I got this." Octavia and Bellamy hugged each other tightly, and I watched, my heart warming.

"Take care of her, or I'll personally hunt you down." I breathed to Lincoln, and to my surprise, he cracked a smile.

"If anything happens to her, I'll let you."

"Thanks for the sword, If I manage to make it out alive.." I glanced at Octavia who nodded her head.

"It's still yours for the taking." Octavia breathed and then looked at her brother. "I love you, big brother." Octavia's eyes were getting glossy.

Bellamy let Octavia go, and I made my way over to her. "Stay safe, Okay?"

"You too." Octavia nodded. The gravity of the situation deemed to hit Octavia as her eyes misted over as she looked to Bellamy, whose eyes were shiny.

"May we meet again." Bellamy's voice was quiet.

"May we meet again." A few tears escaped Octavia's cheeks as Lincoln began running and finally disappeared.

"We'll see her again, Bellamy." I grabbed his arm in comfort. Bellamy nodded slightly, still looking defeated as he pulled me in for a kiss.

"If we don't make it.." I whispered against his lips. "I.. I just wanted you to know that I.." My throat felt dry as I tried to gather up the courage. "I- Uh.." I bit the inside of my cheek. "I care about you, okay.."

****

Bellamy and I appeared as close to the drop ship as we could get, which ended up being at the entrance of one of the foxholes. Clarke seemed to be looking for us as relief broke out on her face at our sudden appearance by the door.

Bellamy pushed me towards Clarke. "Get in the dropship." The urgency in Bellamy's voice made me pause. "What? No-"

"Get in the Drop ship now, Dakota! Go!" Bellamy pushed me again as he charged towards a nasty looking grounder.

"Bellamy!" I screamed, and started to run, but Clarke caught my hand and spun me back.

"Clarke, Bellamy's out there!"

"I know," Clarke whispered quietly and glanced at me.

"No..." I backed away from her, facing Clarke. I looked back when Bellamy had gotten punched in the face by the grounder and I felt myself being pulled back into the dropship. "No!" I screamed at the top of my lungs as tears spilled down.

And with glistened eyes, Clarke reached out beside her and pulled the lever of the door so that it came to seal. I closed my eyes, trying to shut out the pain that I could feel from knowing who was on the other side of that door and what was going to happen to them. Both Bellamy and Finn? Spacewalker and her Bellamy? How could-

My eyes snapped open when there was a sudden sound of an attack nearing into their drop ship. Immediately following the sound, someone pushed aside the curtain of the drop ship and Clarke and I backed away seeing Anya, wielding two swords against her enemy.

Clarke turned her head sharply as the sounds of beating outside the drop ship took place. "Jasper, now!"

We all waited in anticipation as Jasper pressed the button he was supposed to, that would cause a ring of fire around their ship. But there was no noise. Jasper fiddled with the controller in his hand, but it was useless. There was nothing. Clarke turned back to Anya.

"Anya, you can't win," she promised, though her breath shook. After a moment of hesitation, Anya growled and swung her swords at Clarke and I blocked the swords from Clarke and managed to cut my hand in the process. Miller knocked her in the head with his gun, but it was far from over. Hissing at the pain, I looked up at the Grounder.

"Okay, Grounder bitch. You want to die? I'd be happy to do the honors." I spoke loudly to the people in the ship. "No one touch this bitch! She's mine!"

Anya made a war cry again and I took one of the rods that were installed in the drop ship when we all came down, to block her attempt to swing. The swords blocked, but this Grounder was tougher than the last.

The Grounders might not have been the reason for Wells's death, but they were the reason for so many others. And now they had Bellamy and Finn too?

The rod I used was more effective than a sword. Though the blunt object wasn't sharp enough to cut, I hit Anya with all her strength and managed to get a few good hits out of it. I managed to knocked both swords out of Anya's hands, despite the cut that was dripping blood all over the rusty pole, and angrily smacked Anya with the rod over and over again until her face was bleeding. I heard Clarke's protests behind me and the cheers from the other delinquents. Bellamy didn't deserve to die. Finn didn't deserve to die.

I finally had Anya pinned underneath me and the rod was pressed underneath Anya's chin, cutting off her air supply. My knees kept Anya's arms down and I pressed harder on the rod.

"No!" she shouted at them. Everyone silenced. "We are not Grounders!"

Clarke's words hit me, and I found myself looking down at Anya. "Tie her up. Tightly. If I look at it and even think I could be able to get out of it, we're gonna have a problem."

Right as she said the last word, the drop ship trembled. They could hear screams around them, as well as an extremely painful heat envelop their space.

Jasper did it.

When the drop ship door opened, all I saw was a bunch of grey. A nasty color of charcoal covered our sights as I and Clarke stepped off of the drop ship with the rest of the hundred following close behind.

Our entire camp was covered in skeletons and grey mist, the trees burnt to their core. No skeleton was recognizable, and that made it all the worse.

I broke down onto my knees as my vision began to blur. "No..." I sobbed. "I didn't.. I didn't get to say it.." I choked on my own words, that's when red smoke began billowing around us. My eyes widen in surprise as I looked around the ground.

"What the hell?" Jasper asked.

"Mountain Men."

The red smoke seemed to have some sort of sedative effect to it. Everyone dropped to their knees, coughing and coughing until they finally gave way and closed their eyes. I could see Clarke a few feet away from me in the heavy smog, just a bright speck of blonde, and I tried to fight whatever was making my eyes heavy for as long as I could. I rolled over onto my back, looking straight up at the sky, and the last thing I saw before my eyes closed was the sight of a very bright green light in front of a man who clearly had a gun pointed right at my head just as I descended into darkness.
