chapter twenty eight - the calm before the storm *unedited*
Bellamy made his way to the drop ship. Campers cleared out of the way as soon as they saw my body dangling lifeless in Bellamy's arms. I turned my head to the side to see two guys carrying a girl out. I frowned and took in her appearance, she had blood staining her cheeks and mouth. The girl was dead, which made the fear that died out come back again. I glanced up at Bellamy with panic written all over my face.
"Not everyone is that bad." I heard Clarke's voice. I frowned when I turned my head to look at her. She looked as bad as I felt, smears of blood adorning her face and her skin was shiny with sweat.
"Alright, show's over." Bellamy's strained voice called out. "Get back to your posts." Bellamy put me back onto the ground, steadying myself onto my feet.
"You shouldn't of touched me.." I held onto Bellamy's arm as I spoke.
"If I didn't catch you back there, you would of fell, I was helping you from not embarrassing yourself." Bellamy smiled down at me as I rolled my eyes at his humor.
"I can walk on my own." I told him. He looked at me hesitantly as he pulled his arm away from my grasp.
"You got enough food in there? Water?" Bellamy asked Clarke as I made my way towards her slowly.
"Yeah." Clarke nodded. "Some medicine might be nice." I attempted a small smile at Clarke's sarcasm.
"Octavia, you okay?" I watched as Clarke turned back around, guilt written all over her expression.
"She's not here, Bellamy. Clarke sent her to see Lincoln," I explained to him, not looking back to see his rage filled expression.
"Look if there's a cure, he has it." Clarke sighed out. "I didn't tell you because I knew you wouldn't let her go."
I could feel Bellamy burning a hole through my skull and I turned back around to look at him. "If anything happens to her," He threatened. "You and me are going to have problems." Bellamy snapped, and then glanced up at Clarke before turning away.
"Bellamy, wait! Bellamy!" I called out to him. I heard Clarke sigh out behind me and I turned to face her. "He'll get over it. Help me inside, would you?" I muttered. She looked down at me, her head dipping down in a curt nod.
"Nobody touch him!"
"Get to the dropship, now!"
I turned around, confusion furrowing my brows as panicked shouts began erupting from the rest of the camp. My gaze fell upon a boy who was leaking blood from his eyes. Suddenly, a girl beside Raven began to sway and her eyes seemed unfocused. Raven frowned and held out her arms to steady the girl.
"Raven! Don't touch her!" I called out, but I was already too late.
The girl fell back onto one of the boys who tried to catch her and before anyone could help her to her feet, she reached and vomited all over the boys face, who in turn began to panic. The crowd started going berserk and pointing their guns on each other. A few people try to maintain order but were failing miserably. My head was pounding so severely that I could almost feel the blood pulsing in my ears, almost drowning out the screams.
Suddenly, a loud gunshot sounded from behind me. I let out a small yelp in surprise and turned to see Clarke with a gun pointed in the air.
"This is exactly what the grounders want." She said, her voice almost breathy sounding due to her exhaustion.
"They won't have to kill us if we kill each other for them." I pointed out.
A boy to my right suddenly stepped forward, his gun pointed directly at my chest. "They wont have to kill us if we all catch the virus." He snapped, his finger moving towards the trigger of the gun. "Get back in the damn dropship!" That's when Bellamy grabbed the gun from him, ramming into his jaw with so much force I wouldn't be surprised if it had broken something.
"Not to state the obvious, but your quarantine isn't working." Bellamy grumbled. His gaze flickered over to meet mine, and I saw worry flash through his eyes as he looked at me.
Clarke's body suddenly crashed into mine. "Finn, don't touch her!" Raven's worried voice called out as Finn rushed forward to catch Clarke's falling body.
I tried to regain my balance as I swayed from Clarke hitting me. "There is no cure!" Octavia's voice rang out in the clearing, and I felt relieved that she was okay. "But the grounders don't use the sickness to kill." She added.
"Really?" Bellamy's unconvinced voice piped up as he pointed towards the dead bodies. "I warned you about seeing that grounder again."
"Yeah, well, I have a warning for you too. The grounders are coming." Murmurs spread through the crowd and I tightened my jaw. "They attack at first light!"
****
"Clear some space! Lay him down!" I was jolted awake by a loud shout, my eyes snapping open in surprise. Octavia was hopping over people's legs towards a large padded area across from me. A figure was dropped on the pad, and my eyes widen when I noticed it was Bellamy.
I wanted to go over there, but my limps were far to weak to carry me there.
"Hey big brother." Octavia said softly, wiping off blood from his mouth.
Finn tried to hand me some water but I shook my head. "Give it to Bellamy." I said hoarsely. He paused but then nodded, handing it to Octavia.
"I'm scared." Bellamy said with a whisper.
"I won't let anything happen to you." Octavia assured him.
"That's what I said to you the day you were born." Bellamy whispered.
I know. You've told me a thousand times." Octavia laughed and Bellamy smiled at her.
"I'm glad you're here." Bellamy gripped Octavia's hand tightly.
"Just get some rest, okay?"
Octavia looked up at me when a wave of nausea hit me. "Dakota?" She asked, concern lacing in her voice. I leaned over, the taste of hot acrid blood filling my mouth until I was forced to open, splashing crimson across the floor.
Bellamy looked to his left tiredly as Murphy gripped my shoulder, and started drawing soothing circles onto my back as I threw up. "It's okay, I got her." Murphy spoke, looking back at Octavia who was looking over with concern.
Murphy helped me back up, he let me rest into his stomach. I let out a groan as my head began to spin. I felt Murphy remove some stray hairs that stuck to my forehead due to the sweat. I opened my eyes to bore them into Murphy's blue ones. "I'm okay." I breathed out, leaning to sit up properly.
I looked to my right to see Bellamy turn his head quickly when I saw him looking. I managed to get onto my feet and hobble over to him. "Hey, you." I said gently, sitting down next to him.
"I don't want to die." Bellamy whispered, and the small smile that was on my face disappeared. I reached for Bellamy's hand, squeezing it.
"You aren't going to die. I won't let that happen." I told him as I looked through my wet eyelashes. "We'll both be okay." I whispered.
****
"Get away from me." Bellamy growled, which made me awake from my restless slumber. I jumped, my eyes snapping open.
"Bellamy, you're sick, okay? I'm just trying to help." Murphy replied, crouching beside him with a cup of water in his hands. I frowned at him before looking at Bellamy. He had dark streams of blood coming from his nose.
Murphy grabbed a clean cloth and held it out, but Bellamy didn't take it. Instead, he used his jacket sleeve to wipe the blood away. I sat up, extending my hand to take the cloth in Murphy's hand.
"When I get better, if you're still here-" Bellamy started.
"Hey," Clarke's voice interrupted Bellamy's threat as she came up from behind Murphy. "I got this guys." As Murphy stood up and handed the cup to Clarke, I moved over to sit beside Bellamy.
"Are you guys feeling better?" He asked.
"Not one hundred percent, but defiantly not worse." I assured Bellamy when Clarke nodded her response. Bellamy's hand rested on my knee as he took a sip of water.
"That's good." He breathed. I gave him a small smile, watching as he glanced around the dropship. "You seen Octavia?"
"She was up all night helping people. Murphy gave her a break." Clarke informed him. Bellamy didn't seem too pleased by the information as his face turned into a frown.
"Don't tell me you trust him now." Bellamy asked incredulously.
"Bellamy.." I growled out.
"Trust? No. I do believe in second chances, though."
"It's almost dawn. Better get everyone inside. Maybe the grounders will think we're not home." Bellamy changed the subject.
I laughed, drawing their attention. "I wish."
"Not everyone is sick." Clarke frowned.
"Sick is better than dead." Bellamy shot back.
"You don't think Finn and Jasper are gonna pull it off." Clarke realized.
"Do you?" Bellamy asked, and Clarke sighed.
"I'll get everyone inside." Clarke left the two of us alone.
I was still trying to fight off the waves of nausea as Bellamy was still watching Clarke walk away to do as he'd said. I thought I finally had it under control until I had moved slightly and the blood rushed up into my mouth, choking me violently.
Bellamy looked back as he heard an odd sound, his face splitting into terror as he gripped onto my waist, rolling me onto my side as I continued to cough and sputter.
"The grounder's are so going to get a knife in the face," I sat back up again, while wiping my mouth with my sleeve. I heard Bellamy laugh slightly behind me, but concern still filled his features.
"You lied to me again, didn't you? You don't feel better at all." Murphy stood infront of me, holding out a small cup of water.
"I didn't lie. I do feel better, just not one hundred percent."
Murphy rolled his eyes. "Don't die on me okay? Not sure I could handle it."
"I don't aim to disappoint, Jonathon Murphy." I managed to smirk up at him. Clarke called Murphy's name and he walked away again.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Bellamy looked at me.
"I'm fine, Bellamy. Don't worry so much."
'Someone has too." Bellamy replied which made me roll my eyes at him. I got to my feet shakily and Bellamy did the same, preparing to steady me if I needed it. "You should be resting." I told him.
Bellamy rolled his eyes as I started walking towards the parachute. I made my way outside with Bellamy not far behind me just in time to hear a loud bang and to see a thick cloud of smoke spiraling into the air. Clarke came up beside us, looking up in amazement.
"They did it." Bellamy breathed.
'I am become death." Clarke murmured, and I joined her. "the destroyer of worlds." We said in sync which made her look over at me with a small smile. Bellamy looked over at us, curiously. "It's Oppenheimer, the man who built the first-'
"I know who Oppenheimer is." Bellamy interjected, looking back up at the scene.
"What's happening with Murphy?" I suddenly asked. "I mean you've got all the intel from him."
"I think he should prove his worth here." Clarke answered, making me smile slightly. "Besides, we need all the muscle we can get."
"And if he screws up?" I asked hesitantly, afraid of what their answer would be.
"He's gone." Clarke said.
"He's dead." Bellamy corrected. "And I don't care what you say," Bellamy looked down at me. I exhaled harshly before returning into the dropship.
It had been two days since we've had blow up the bridge. Those that were sick had started to come out of the drop ship, feeling better enough to walk without aid. Everyone was on edge for those two days, waiting for the grounder's to retaliate. In the two days, we've lost Connor to the virus, and I couldn't say I was particularly sad about it. The kid was the one who put the noose around Murphy, and the one who encouraged Bellamy to hang him.
Octavia had also decided to stay, after choosing her brother and her people over her lover. I knew she was upset, but I also knew that Octavia believed that she was doing the right thing.
I had also got the word that Raven and Finn were no longer together, part of me was happy for Clarke since she didn't need to look at Finn with guilt written all over her features. But another part of me felt pity for Raven. Raven loved him, and when I couldn't be there for her, he was. She called him her family, and now with him out of the picture, she only had me left. I knew Raven was trying to cope with the thought of Finn no longer being apart of her life anymore, which is why I was sitting beside her, helping her make bullets.
"Oh come on, Kota. This is probably the best chance we have of defeating the Grounders."
"You say that, but if we do this then it's going to use a critical amount of gun powder and then what?" I ran a hand through my hair, untangling some of the knots. "I doubt the grounders will actually fall for this."
"They fell for the bomb on the bridge, didn't they?" Raven retorted. "And Jasper is currently trying to make more gun powder, so what's the problem?"
"You know I'm all up for making things go boom. But mines?" I sighed. "What if our own people trigger them? That could happen, they're dumb enough."
Raven let out a small snort, "They won't."
I rolled my eyes. I did agree with her plan of planting mines around the base, but what I didn't like was the thought of some of our own getting hurt in the process.
"You talked to Finn?" I decided to speak up.
Raven stopped what she was doing, and took a breath. "I haven't really spoken to him, it was only a couple days ago anyway."
I chewed on my bottom lip, "I knew how much he meant to you, Rae."
Raven sighed out, putting down her bullet that she was checking. "I just don't feel like talking about it, okay?"
I let out a scoff. "That's not a choice that you have. There's a difference between Finn and I, and it's that; I'm not going anywhere. I will continue to be your shoulder that you need to cry on." I raised my voice at her.
Raven looked up from her lap, with a broken smile appearing on her face. "I don't care if we're in the middle of shooting some grounder ass, if you need to cry, you damn well know I will stand there to protect you while you cry your little heart out."
Raven smiled as a tear escaped her eye. I smiled back at her, pulling her into my arms. She tugged onto my jacket roughly before speaking. "I'm just so glad you're alive, and your here with me."
"I know, I am too." I exhaled and looked up to see Finn entering the tent. I cleared my throat and pulled away from Raven whom had an confused look on her face. I gestured towards Finn who was standing behind her and I saw her jaw tighten as she turned her head to glance at him sideways.
I decided to exit the tent to give them some privacy, and apart of me was hoping that what they had could be repaired, but I knew that it wouldn't happen. Finn loved Clarke, and It was no point of denying that he didn't care for the blonde. The looks of pity that he gave her as he was standing with Raven, or from across the camp.
"Fire!" Someone screamed out, taking me out of my thoughts.
I turned my head around to see orange flames in the corner of my eye. The smokehouse housing all of our meat suddenly was aflame, everyone inside rushing to get out from the chaos. I ran towards the smokehouse, seeing Bellamy just reaching Octavia, pulling her out of the flames.
"Murphy?" I called out, stepping towards the structure, squealing as one of the flames hit my skin from the slight breeze.
Bellamy immediately grabbed a hold of my wrist, yanking me out of the smokehouse. "Bellamy, Murphy-'
Bellamy sighed and covered his mouth and nose with his arm as he disappeared into the burning smokehouse. I looked down at a coughing Octavia and decided to kneel down beside her.
"Are you okay?" I asked her, rubbing her back as she coughed. She looked at me and nodded, her lungs unable to let her speak.
Bellamy wasn't gone long, and a minute later he was returning with Murphy, dropping him onto the ground as Murphy coughed as sputtered as he pulled himself up beside Octavia.
"Hey, hey. You're okay." I kneeled down beside Murphy as Bellamy checked on Octavia. "What the hell happened?" I asked, turning my attention towards Octavia as I patted Murphy's back.
"The fire got spread to the wood and-'
"This is all your fault! We told you it was too much wood!" Murphy launched himself at Del the second he could stand.
"Get the hell away from me!"
"Murphy!" I called out, getting up to make my way between the two but Bellamy beat me to it, shoving Slate and Murphy away from each other.
"Stop! Save it for the grounders!" Bellamy yelled and the two stopped fighting reluctantly.
"Bell, now what the hell are we gonna do? That was all the food!" Octavia hissed, watching as the smokehouse behind them began to crumble in flames.
Bellamy didn't respond to her. Instead, he looked at Clarke, who was standing next to him. Clarke stared at the rubble before her before shrugging, having no solution herself. Clarke eventually had everyone clear out, and I helped her to get everyone back to their posts, and alert for a Grounder attack while the smokehouse came to nothing. When I returned I found that the orange light in the middle of the ground was barely glowing and a lot of charcoal was left behind. I sighed, and walked over to where Bellamy was squatted down, surveying the burnt ground.
"So did you find out what really happened?" Clarke asked, coming up beside me.
"Murphy says that Del kept feeding the fire, mostly because Octavia told him it was a bad idea." A bitter edge cut through Bellamy's words as he glanced up.
"And we believe Murphy?" Clarke asked in surprise.
Bellamy's eyes slid to me for a second. "I do, yeah."
"We have some wild onions and nuts in the dropship, but it's only enough to last maybe one or two weeks. What's left here?"
"Nothing. It's all burned." Bellamy stood up.
The three of us stared at each other for awhile before I spoke up, "All right, then. Anyone we can spare goes out to hunt."
But before I could turn to leave to announce the decision, Bellamy gripped my arm gently, and pulling me to a stop. "With the whole grounder army out there?"
"Grounder army or not, if we don't feed our soldiers, they can't fight. Trust me, nuts and onions won't hold anyone for long even if some take one for the team and starve it out," I rationalized, and I watched as Bellamy's eyes dropped as he recognized the reality and dropped his hand from my arm. Bellamy didn't put up a fight about my plan, and soon enough, he was barking orders, as Clarke and I started to round people up.
"Hey Clarke, you maybe wanna go together?"
I looked over at the kid who looked way to excited and I slowly backed away from Clarke, and right into Bellamy.
"What are you doing?" He sighed as I hid the gun behind my back with a cheeky grin.
"Going hunting, what does it look like?"
Bellamy's face turned stern. "No way, you're staying here."
"Not a chance, Bellamy. I've been cooped up in this stupid camp for too long. I need some excitement." I pouted at him.
Bellamy rolled his eyes. "Fine, but you're coming with me."
I grinned and followed Bellamy into Raven's tent. "What are you doing?"
Bellamy ignored her, walking straight into the tent unannounced. "We need more ammo."
Raven handed Bellamy a couple of bullets. "That's it until Jasper gets back. Now get out of my tent. Both of you."
"Raven.." I frowned upon noticing her full pack.
"Where you going?" Bellamy asked next, upon noticing the pack that I pointed out.
"The hell out of here."
"No way. You're not leaving." Bellamy denied.
"I'm going with you then." I spoke up, but Raven ignored me, her full attention on Bellamy.
"Really? And what makes you think you can tell me what to do. Aren't you a janitor?" Raven snapped angrily.
"Where are you gonna go?" Bellamy ignored her remark.
"Into these damn woods. Don't worry about it. I'll find someplace safe."
Raven went to walk past Bellamy, but Bellamy caught her just in time. "Just wait. Don't be an idiot. You go alone and you're dead or worse." Bellamy's words were sincere and I watched the two quietly.
"So what's your plan? Sit here until you run out of bullets?"
"Yeah. Or until you come up with something better." Bellamy admitted which Raven glanced up at him, confused.
"Come on Raven, you came down here in a pod you rebuilt yourself. You made a bomb out of a tin can. What else you got in that head of yours?"
"Radios." Raven spoke after a moment. "We can't defend ourselves if we can't communicate. If we can build radios, walkie-talkies-'
"Then we can fight as a team. We'd have a chance at least." Bellamy and I stepped closer to Raven as excitement took over our features.
Raven nodded as Bellamy shot her a smile. "See, we need you. You may be a huge pain in the ass, but you're smart." Bellamy ducked out of the tent again.
I looked back at Raven as her face lit up, and her lips lifted into a small smile. Her eyes shined with an emotion that I've recently grown familiar with. I felt an emotion bubble up inside me, and I found myself staring at her for too long. Raven glanced up at me, with a look on her face as I ducked under the tent to follow Bellamy.
***
"Promise you won't go throwing axes at a little girls head this time?" I called out over my shoulder. Bellamy walked a few feet back from me, a gun hot in his hand.
"You're the one with the knife, Short-stack."
"Sorry, then I can rephrase." I paused. "Promise you won't shoot at a little girl's head this time?" I smirked back at him.
Bellamy chuckled out. "The only head I'll be shooting out here is a Grounder's, Kane. No need to worry."
"I doubt the Grounder's are going to come out of nowhere, Blake." I stopped and surveyed the tracks at my feet, feeling slightly lost. Finn told me what to look for, but I was defiantly not a good of a tracker as I was a hunter. "It's been two days, they're probably still recovering from what happened at the bridge." I told him, and decided to continue to follow the tracks.
I heard Bellamy scoff behind me, "You think so?"
"A girl can hope." I turned around to glance over my shoulder at the older Blake, whom was looking into the forest on his left. "But I'm sure Octavia would know if there's another attack. Like It or not, Lincoln is an ally."
"Lincoln?" Bellamy repeated, unable to hide his distaste for the Grounder who has grown on his little sister. "What the hell does a Grounder have to do with anything?"
"I see the way they are around each other. Lincoln clearly doesn't want Octavia to get hurt. If there was going to be an attack, he'd let her know."
"We can't reply on some Grounder that may or may not care about my sister for information." Bellamy said coldly. "For all we know, he could be playing her. Which is why I keep telling her to not get involved with him."
"I just think you're being unreasonable. You can't stop love, Bellamy." I turned to face him. "I know the way he looks at her, 'cause I used to look at someone like that. He means well." I told him and he held my gaze for a moment and for a second, I thought that he would of actually kind of agreed with my words, but he only ignored my comment, which made me sigh out and turn back around.
I froze on the spot when I heard rustling in a nearby bush, Bellamy brought up solid when he hit my back. I didn't move a muscle, but my eyes roamed over the quiet forest as I stood on top of a trail of tracks. Suddenly, the rustling was heard again, and my heart stopped for a moment. A boar sluggishly came out of the bush, not aware of the two of us standing not even two feet away. A content smile came upon my features as I threw the knife into the boar, hitting it right in the neck. It let out a tiny squeal and I turned to look at Bellamy.
"And that's how it's done." I winked at him and went to go tug the knife out of the boar's neck.
