Chapter Four
I turn around and look at her.
"Oh no. Not old ladies. Old ladies are never a good sign," Max mutters.
"Ah, my dear. You should not be alive," the lady says to me, pointing a bony finger at my face.
"I...what? Who are you lady, and what do you want with me?" I ask. The lady keeps her bony finger raised at my face.
"You shouldn't be asking who I am, you should be asking who you are, Peter Labelle. But it's better if I don't spoil the surprise for you," the lady says. Her bony finger pointed at my face hasn't moved an inch.
"Oh no, she knows your name. Double no-no," Max says, slowly drawing his sword.
"I think we know our own names, thanks. Are you going to tell us who you are or can we leave?" Asks Amber. The lady points her bony finger at Amber now.
"Oh, poor child. Your fate is already written. Nothing anyone can do will change it, should I spare you the suffering and kill you now?" The old lady says. Amber opens her mouth to say something but suddenly she cries out with pain.
"I suppose I should just kill you now," the lady's finger is glowing, and Amber falls to he ground clutching her head.
"Do something!" Max says. I panic and grab the emerald out of my pocket, turning it into a sword. Amber clutches her head still crying out, tears flooding down her cheeks.
I attempt to stick the sword through the lady-but it passes right through her.
"Max! What is she?! How do we stop her and what is she doing?" I ask. The lady cackles.
"Just showing her her worst moments of her past-her darkest memories, until they kill her," the lady cackles. Amber shudders on the ground, still clutching her head and crying. Then Max snaps his fingers.
"She's a mnimi! They rarely show up unless there's lots of darkness ahead. They show your worst memories until they consume you and then-" Max starts but I cut him off.
"How do we kill her?" I ask. Max seems to rack his brain and then he snaps his fingers again.
"Only a Stygian iron blade can kill her, or so the legends say. Can you make your emerald summon one?" He asks me. Amber's movements are weaker and she is crying less.
"Um...Stygian Iron!" I say pulling out my emerald. Suddenly a big black blade is in my hands. The lady screams as I cut her with my sword, and she crumbles to dust. I stare at the pile of gold dust and will my emerald to turn into a emerald again, and I slip it into my pocket. Max is knelt down next to Amber, who is still shaking, the tears on her face now dry.
"Hey, hey, Amber, its over. Its okay, Max says. Amber shakes her head, still shaking.
"No, no, no. I saw my dad, I saw him dead in the street. He was dead-he was dead. Again. And then they took me away from him. They took me and I couldn't see him and I couldn't do anything and he's gone and-" Amber chokes back another sob, wiping her face. Her eyes glow purple again.
"Amber, it was a mnimi. She stirred up your worst memories, it wasn't happening again. Your okay, take deep breaths," Max says. Amber takes deep breaths and her eyes are normal again. She sits up and sniffs, wiping the last of her tears away. Apparently her dads death that been worse than she had let on.
"Are you okay?" I ask her as the stands up shakily. She nods and takes more deep breaths.
"Let's go to camp guys, and we can get you some Ambrosia and Nectar I to,d you guys about for Amber," Max says. Max takes Amber's arm and helps her up the hill, her steps still shaky. As we get to the top, I see a dragon wrapped around a tree with a Golden Fleece on the tree branch. I didn't know a ton about Greek myths, but I had heard about the Golden Fleece.
"Is that a dragon guarding the Golden Fleece?" I ask. Max nods, and Amber seems unfazed. Maybe it's the fact that a mnimi monster thing just tried to kill her, or maybe it's the fact that she can turn into a wolf, and a dragon doesn't surprise her much. We walk past the tree and I see camp. Kids and teens in orange shirts training with swords, bows, daggers, everything you can imagine. We walk through camp getting some stares, and then we head up to this big blue house that Max tells us is the big house. We enter it and a horse-man greets us.
"Hello, you must be Peter! And, Max, did you find another one?" the horse man says. I frown.
"You could say that," Max says.
"Oh, pardon me, my name is Chiron," the horse man says. I raise my eyebrows.
"The Chiron?" I ask. Chiron nods his head.
"What attacked you?" Chiron asks Max who is still supporting a only slightly shaking Amber.
"A mnimi," Max mutters. Chiron raises his eyebrows.
"Oh, I see. Well, we must hope it doesn't mean anything," Chiron says. "Let me get you some Ambrosia," he says. He goes out of the room and comes back with a small square of Ambrosia and hands it to Amber. She stands up fully without any support and eats it. The full color returns to her face and she seems stronger again.
"It tastes like my dad's chocolate cake," Amber says. Chiron smiles.
"I will leave Max as your guide, welcome to camp halfblood," Chiron says to Amber and I.
Yet they are there
