Chapter Forty-One

Sometimes vengeance is not only for the Lord.

                            Writer's Voice

Romano stepped from the shadows of the luncheon hotel into the reception at exactly 7 pm on Friday of the same week he spoke with Mia about her kidnapping. It was chilly, but that wasn't the reason he was in a black leather trench coat and groves. He was there to collect an overdue debt.

The luncheon wasn't the best hotel in the area; neither was it luxurious, but it was the best hideout for the Mafia and low lives. Also, it provided every vice known to man, prostitution, gambling, and everything else in between.

A young man in glasses sat behind a screened door looking suspiciously at Rom while adjusting the glasses around his nose. There was something different about Romano, something that set him apart from the men who frequented the hotel, and the young man recognized it. It wasn't his expensive outfit because almost everyone who patronized the establishment had money. It was the absence of wickedness on his eyes, yet they were hard and unforgiving. He also looked like a man who would kill and ask questions later, but only when crossed.

"You must be Zic," Romano said, moving to stand near the screen door. "I know you keep a gun at the bottom drawer of that " He pointed at the chest length wooden desk beside a stunned Zic.

"The screen is bulletproof," Romano smirked, his eyes never leaving Zic's. They stood facing each other, not saying a word until loud music started playing from the casino upstairs. The night had just begun. It was the perfect time to sin.

"I need your help." Zic glanced at Rom in a confused look,

"I'm under no obligation to help you." his voice shook in fear. Romano was not in the mood to entertain fright or the time to have Zic think he had a choice. "I will give you two thousand dollars if you tell me which room this man is staying" He placed Tony's image on the screen door waiting for Zic to recognize him.

"I haven't seen him." He lied, staring at the image. One dark eyebrow flickered upward like he was asking for patience from above. "I don't take liars lightly," Romano said calmly, putting the photo back into his pocket. Zic shifted his eyes nervously, wondering how to protect the client's privacy and still keep his life.

"No chance of that," Romano breathed, reading his mind." I don't have much time." Rom said, Looking at him. The young man nodded, having realized that withholding the information Rom wanted wouldn't keep him from finding the man on the image. He should have known there would come a time to pay for all the money he was getting to overlook wicked men's iniquities. The gods must have been punishing him for it, he thought regretfully as he typed in something on the system, and the screen suddenly filled with Tony's image. He turned the apple desktop towards Rom to see the information against the image without him having to mouth the room number.

A sense of relief run through Rom as he contemplated his plan. "If it makes you feel any better, he deserves what is coming." Zic wanted to say it wasn't Romano's decision to make, but he found he didn't want to be an enemy of this man.

"I trust you won't raise the alarm before I'm done," Rom said in a toneless voice, giving a salute to the young man who watched him leave in a mixture of anxiety, uncertainty, and fear.

Climbing the stairs soundlessly, he came to the top of the stairs, hiding at the corner, assessing the crowd under the dim lights. Romano had a unique ability to see in the dark and walk without making any sound. Moving his eyes around the room, he noticed his prey wasn't among them, but he saw his brother, Paulie, a woman astride him. They were having sex; he could tell by the way the woman was bobbing about.

Turning around to walk through the corridor towards Tony's room, Rom considered his choice to kill the older brother first. It was a punishment to the young one, for wanting to rape Mia. Had it not been for Tony's reasoning, Paulie would have definitely raped Mia, his punishment was to live for two weeks, or one depending on Rom's mood mourning his brother, he would grieve, Romano's sources had said Paulie loved Tony. And not just that, Tony kept him from acting from his temper and impulses. Tony was the brain, and his younger brother was the dump.

Knocking softly at the door, Romano waited for an answer, placing his ear against the door listening for any movement, and then he heard a man moaning and knew he was inside.

If this were at another place or another time, he would have gunned down the door, forced himself in, but Tony would have a gun somewhere within reaching distance.

Taking out a pin, looking about to see that no one saw him, he opened the door but stood by for a minute or so to give them a sense of safety in case he heard the click of the pin.

He stayed there until he heard them moaning again, which was a sign that it was safe to open the door.

Pushing the door, Rom pulled out the gun, slowly opening the door until he was standing at the foot of the bed. They didn't see or hear him at first, but Rom saw the couple on the bed, the woman creamy back was the first thing he saw, long brunette hair brushing around a large tattoo on the left side of her waist.

Romano coughed, causing Tony to jump quickly, dropping the woman unceremoniously on the floor.

"Don't even think about it." Rom caution as he watched Tonny trying to grab his gun. "Why?" There was no need for Rom to pretend not to know what he meant. He had pulled over the beddings to cover his nakedness; his eyes flashed with hatred as he looked at Rom.

The sound of the woman chattering teeth reminded Rom of the little bell father Jose used to ring at their ears when they pretended to be asleep to miss mass.

Funny, that he would remember a priest and mass at a time when he was about to take a life. However, that did not stop him from what he was there to do.

"For her." He answered, "And because I cannot forgive your brother," and then he fired the gun. It was a silencer; no one would hear it discharging.

He stared at the body for a second before moving his eyes to the woman. She was still naked, her eyes glistening with tears and pleading as she looked at Rom.

"Your life is not mine to take." Then he turned and walked away thinking of another life that was his to take in a week or two.
