Chapter Forty-Nine

I know if i take this long to update you don't remember the story, dw, I don't either. But the good news is, the story will be finished by July, there is only 5-7 chaps left. Give me till June 22, I finish exams then xx

Chief didn't seem pleased.

But he didn't seem angry either.

He crouched on the ground and just stared at me for a few moments, just stared with zero expression on his face and I matched it.

And then he spoke.

"I knew you were trouble since I first met you,"

I smiled, "Admit it, you love it." I said, and the way his eyes crinkled even though he didn't smile I knew he did.

"You did what you had to, you protected the rightful heir." he said surprising me, and here I thought I was going to get a lecture, "We can pass it off as self-defence, there are a lot of loopholes we can use, if we find them."

"What are you talking about?"

"The boys are looking over them right now. There is always an exception, let's see if there is one for killing royalty,"

"What?" I asked feeling confused, "I'm not going to be hanged?"

Chief looked at me confused, "Why do you always think you're going to be hanged, no, we will get you out of this alive. We're trying to contact Nik's parents to see if they will come speak for you, you have a hearing you know, a panel."

"Oh."

"But," he said frowning, lifting his his hand to rub his jaw, of course, there was always a but

"What?"

"The king might try and do something between now and then, and the hearing is taking place an hours ride away from here, anything could happen in that hour."

My heart skipped a beat, the king wouldn't let me out of this alive, "And he has something up his sleeve, I just know it."

What could possibly be up his sleeve. There was knock on the glass door and I looked up as Chief looked over his shoulder at the guard pointing to his watch, chief sighed turning back to look at me, "I have to go, I only get five minutes."

They were timing my visits?

"I'll come back tomorrow morning,"

What time was it now?

"How's Nik, and Alex," and Daniel.

"They're good, Nik is shaken up but he'll live, he needs to deal with it. Alex is fine, stable, healthy, he wanted to visit you but he needs to take it easy.

"You guys told him?"

"Well it was hard not to, pretty sure everyone knows." the loud was knocked this time, more impatient as the guard glared at us.

What about Daniel, did he want to visit me?

"I'll be back tomorrow Isandra, just be....vigilant."

Before I could ask him what he meant he was being escorted back out and I looked up at the guard who was glaring at me, what the hell were you looking at?

Chief's word were in my head, be vigilant, and now I couldn't sleep. Every noise would wake me up, every sound, and my eyes kept drifting to the other cell. Who was in there. I had to know, I had to see

I stretched my legs out again, I could feel my eyes drooping, exhaustion, this it what it must feel like, no energy to move, to think, you just wanted to sleep, but you couldn't.

My eyes roamed around the darkness, and my head kept going back to the figure I saw. I must be seeing things. There was no other way.

* * *

"How long are you going to keep me here?" I yelled, I knew they could hear me, even though I couldn't see anyone I could feel their presence.

"Can I at least go for a walk, my legs hurt." Right Isandra, if they aren't going to let you eat proper food what makes you think they'll let you roam free.

I sighed sitting back down in my corner trying to hear any noises, damn it don't tell me there were rats down here. I was positive I could hear something all night.

I looked up as I heard footsteps, maybe they will let me go for a walk, wait, probably not. There was a faint light coming closer, a candle in a lantern, who was it?

I squinted my eyes reaching for the rock I had found, I could use it as a weapon if I needed to I can use anything as a weapon.

But as the silhouette got closer I realised I didn't need to. Instead I sat up surprised.

"Daniel?"

"Miss me?" the light from the candles made his brown eyes twinkle as he placed it next to bar and sat down, crossing his legs and placing his hands on his crossed ankles smiling. I had to blink a few times to make sure he was actually there, and the fact that he was well enough to visit me.

And why the hell was my heart beating this fast.

He just stared at me and I stared at him back raising an eyebrow.

"Why are you still here?"

"What do you mean?" I asked confused and caught off guard.

Daniel lifted his knees up a bit, folding his hands over them leaning forward, "People like you, know how to get out of thing like this."

I narrowed my eyes.

"I think you know what I mean."

I knew exactly what he meant.

"I don't have anywhere to go, and I don't want to be on the run." Escaping wasn't an issue, it was the after. Take Daniel for example, I wonder where he went and what he did to make sure no one he knew ever spotted him.

After all he was meant to be dead.

If I left, I would have to be on the run, for a long time before trying to make everyone believe I was dead, which would take a lot of work and effort. Or I could stay.

Living a fugitive life was no life, I would rather prefer death of it.

"It's not that bad, you get to really experience nature."

I looked at his smirking face ,before he broke into a small chuckle, "I'm only joking."

"How did you get down here, did they just let you in?"

"I asked to speak to my girlfriend and they said sure." my heart skipped a beat.

"What?"

"Joking, I know one of the guard, slipped him a hundred, only have," he lifted up his watch, "Five and a half minutes left. Then its switching of the guards. So...if you want, I can get you out of here Sandy."

I swallowed, "No."

"Are you positive."

"Yes."

"Of course." he leaned against the railing and I looked at his head, fidgeting, "Thought you might say that. Always the patriotic one aren't you."

I scoffed, hardly.

"Chief has a plan, we'll make this work."

"What plan?" Chief didn't really tell me a plan, unless his thinking of a plan was the plan, in that case I was sort of doomed.

"I'm not going to lose you again."

I looked up, "Dani-,"

"You don't understand." he cut me off, "Those years, the only thing that got me going was that one day I'll see you again, and I would make things right for what happened all those years ago." he said, nearly whispering which made me have to lean closer to listen. The flickering light was dimming, the candle was nearly out.

"I need to tell you something, about where I was those years."

"What do you mean?"

"Sandy, I wasn't alone. Someone helped me."

I stared into  his dimly lit face, "Who?"

The sound of something vibrating made me flinch and Daniel stood up, "I have to go."

"What," no you can't just start something and leave, now I was too curious damn it. "I'll be back." he held up his lantern blowing into it, the sharp lighting disappearing and I stayed still. Was he gone? Already?

"Isandra."

I flinched, no, he was here.

"Yeah?" I said as my eyes got used to the dark again, where was  he, his voice didn't sound as close as it was.

"I love you."

On santa's lap is getting published so read it for free before I take it down.
