Ancient Mythology

Just a few mythological creatures from the Aztecs, Mayans, and Māori.

Ahuizotl
From Aztec mythology, it is a dog-like creature with a long tail that has a hand on the end. It is said to live in or near water and loves to hunt humans (preferably consuming eyes, nails, and teeth).


Camazotz
From Mayan mythology, it is a large bat-like creature that walks upright on humanoid legs and has a slightly humanoid body shape. It is bloodthirsty and its sole aim is to cause terror.

Cipactli
From Aztec mythology, a type of sea monster, it is part crocodile, part frog, part, fish, and part toad. Every joint in its body contains an extra mouth and it is said to always be hungry.


Hakawai
From Māori mythology, it is a large brightly colored sacred bird. Called the God of the winds. Hearing it's cry is said to be a bad omen, meaning war will come.

Manaia
From Māori mythology, most commonly depicted as a man with the head of a bird or sometimes merely just a bird. It is believed to be the messenger between earth and the spirit world and a guardian against evil.

Poukai
From Māori mythology, it's really just a gigantic bird.... Though it's said to sometimes hunt humans.


Taniwha
From Māori mythology, thy are sea creatures that live in either deep pools in rivers, dark caves, or in the seas. They are depicted as dragon-like and considered to be predatory and dangerous. If respected they will act as guardians, if not they are prone to attacking humans mercilessly.


Quetzalcoatl
From Aztec mythology, it is a giant serpent with large feathered wings. It is known as the wind deity of the Aztecs.
