Gift of a Mage
I saw a bright star on a summer's eve
and knew it, instantaneously. It
summoned me with incandescent pertness,
with luminous, firefly flirtatiousness,
audacious frisk-riskiness and knew it
for what it really meant; so, trembling went.
~
I crossed fiery deserts with soft-toed ship -
lone caravan, a dromedarian-
slow-swaying beast; ceaseless rhythmically, yet,
unhurried, unworried by hardships met,
the wisest of quadrupeds. At night, I
scried the sky for guiding light, pulsated
messages communicated and I
sighed, hobbled grateful, unburdened camel,
tried to sleep, not to weep with loneliness.
~
Now I've come. Far horizons have drawn near,
I come with gifts. All that I can afford,
then something more; I look not for reward;
all that my baobab heart has stored for
countless years is unconditionally
yours; I seek repose and humbly offer
true gold: an uncorrupted soul, a core
as yet untouched, untrammelled by cruelness,
Frank and Sense and more common scents, as well,
and priceless myrrh
.......................................but I cannot bring you Her
and with that you must be content and if
my un-bushelled love is not enough and
you wish me gone, I will go; no murmur,
no reproach, no retaliatory blow.
