It may feel like "I'll take whoever will have me," but you have to be choosy too. The wrong mentor could cause your story to shift away from your vision of how you want it to be. Here's how to decide which mentors are right for you...
1. Inspect their wish lists. The first step is to find out what each mentor is looking for as far as stories they want to work with. Does one or more wish list items line up with your story? Also check if they have a "no" list, which consists of story elements or genres they will not consider. If your story contains any of those elements, then it's best to move on to a different mentor. There are several to choose from, so don't be disheartened.
2. Check what they specialize in. Some mentors may list what their strengths are. It would be great if those strengths lined up with the things you want to improve.
3. Check out their writing style. Take a peek at a couple of the mentor's stories and see if the way they write is the way you'd like to write too.
4. Explore their interactions with others. How they socialize in public spaces (such as Discord or their profile) will likely be how they communicate with you as well. Are they blunt? Wordy? Formal? Humorous? Does it vibe with how you like to interact with people?
5. Ask questions. If you're unsure about anything or want something cleared up, don't be afraid to ask! There's plenty of time, and the mentors are here to help. Speaking of questions, I'm less active during weekends, so if you ask me something and I don't reply right away, I'm probably offline. But I will answer when I get a chance!
There's plenty of time to do your research, so don't get overwhelmed. This is an exciting phase for everyone, so have fun!
