MENTORING STYLE
I may lose a few of you now by mentioning 2024 was my first year being an actual mentor. HOWEVER, I have experience in being a beta reader and sounding board for fellow authors, and I've been a member of communities such as Dreamland and PrettyInPunk for a few years. I try to attend conventions whenever I can, either online or by traveling there, and I've followed my fair share of workshops.
The basis of a genuine good mentorship, and something I kept with my own mentor two years ago, is open communication, if possible, through Discord DM. I would like to do a first general chat where we get to know one another better and you can fully pitch what you have on your story. Trust and honesty are key in this first meet, so don't suck up to me because you think that'll make me like you. I have a zero tolerance for that. Be yourself.
After this first contact, it would be beneficial to do a weekly check-in (chat, mail, voice, or video, whichever you prefer) where we can discuss our progress, but I'll obviously be around for questions or thoughts whenever you have them, or even if you just want to say 'hello' or vent about your day. Just keep in mind I'm in Central European time zone and have a day job, so you may not immediately get a reply. Be patient with me, and I'll be patient with you as well.
Now, as to the mentorship.
I'm flexible about where the focus needs to be. My sole condition is that you have a genuine premise and at least some characters thought out. Regardless of your stage — outlining, recently started, half-way through, almost or fully finished — I will help you wherever you need help.
Accept constructive feedback, but don't be afraid to challenge me. If you have a specific reason for doing something in your story, just tell me about it. I can give you my opinion and advice, but I'll never force you to add or change something. A mentorship is a partnership foremost, and we're working on YOUR story, not mine.
What I can help you with;
- blurbs and loglines
- outlining for or brainstorming about a new story
- polishing an ongoing or completed story with edits, character analysis, looking for those pesky plot holes, etc.
I LOVE research, and I think it's essential in writing, no matter what you write about. I'm about 75% plotter, 15% pantser, and 10% 'I don't know what I'm doing, but this feels good', so I will absolutely research everything I want to write about.
For example, the female MC from my FanFic YOU MUST REMEMBER THIS is a midwife in the 1940s, so I went through absolutely everything I could find to make it as accurate as possible, with medical journals and both the book and TV series of CALL THE MIDWIFE being my main source of info. If you're willing to go that in-depth, I'll gladly assist with my mad research skill.
Aside from the above, something important to note is I have a cinematic mind. Because of this, you'll probably hear me reference a lot of movies or shows when reading a certain paragraph, but that's just how my brain is wired. I need to see a story play out. I need to see your characters; what they look like, what they do.
I'll also tell you what I feel when reading. This can be in a general comment like 'this paragraph hits every heartstring because...' or in a more comical note like 'omg, this character's stubbornness is giving me a migraine'. I'm a Wattpad reader too, after all, so just roll with it ;-)

I'm in the BCM Discord server as well, so you can always tag and ask for a DM if you prefer that.
